You learn something every day.

There will be no peace while Hamas controls Gaza

By Con Coughlin Politics Last updated: December 29th, 2008

David Miliband was right to point out on the Today programme this morning that the lion’s share of the blame for the current violence in Gaza lies with the radical Palestinian militia Hamas, rather than Israel.
Ever since Hamas seized control of Gaza in a bloody coup d’etat last year the Iranian-backed militia has not only persisted with its campaign to destabilise the border with Israel, but has forced tens of thousands of Palestinians to obey its strict Islamic code, even though they have no interest in it.
Hamas is also doing its best to undermine the efforts of the democratically elected Palestinian president Mahmoud Abbas to lay the foundations of a future peace deal with Israel.
The logical conclusion, therefore, is that Hamas’s pernicious influence on the peace process needs to be curbed if any attempt by President Elect Barack Obama to revive the Middle East peace process is to be successful.

The Gaza Flotilla Prepared For War Not Peace
By Walid Phares

De-Blockading Hamas?
At first glance, the takeover by the Israeli Navy of the “humanitarian flotilla” heading towards Gaza is just one more of the disputed crises between Israel and its foes. As in all previous incidents, the spiral of accusations will eventually reach bottom. While media attention will highlight the tactical events—seizure of the ships, rules of engagement, who fired first, the legal location of the incident and the other dramatic details—the rapidly expanding debate will soon reach the strategic intent of the “flotilla.” After all the governments involved issue their condemnations and warnings in all directions, after the UN conferences and issues a statement and international forums mobilize to indict their predictably targeted foe—in this case Israel—the question unavoidably will be: why is there a flotilla heading towards a military zone, and what is the ultimate goal of the operation?

According to the organizers of the “Free Gaza” network which enjoys the support of Hamas and its backers in Damascus and Tehran but also of governments considered in the West as “mainstream” such as the AKP of Turkey and the oil rich Qatar, this vast coalition of regimes and organizations assert that the aim of the 700 militants and activists was to pierce the encirclement of Gaza and lift the naval blockade of the enclave. Hence the actual goal of the humanitarian effort is to relieve Hamas, not to ensure aid to the civilians trapped in the strip. For if aid and comfort was the sole objective of the operation, the material would have been calmly handed to the United Nations’ agencies which would have forwarded it to the network of humanitarian associations and NGOs inside the afflicted zone. Either Egypt or Israel would have checked it and would have, under international obligation, sent it across the cease fire lines.

But the organizers of the flotilla, a vast coalition supporting the Jihadist organization based in Gaza, aimed clearly at a geopolitical gain: open a maritime path for Hamas to receive strategic support from the outside and solidify its grip over the enclave. Spokespersons for the “flotilla” would obviously deny the long term goal and focus on the humanitarian stated agenda. But had the architects of the initiative added a global plan to solve the crisis in Gaza, one would have given credit to the humanitarian version of the story. From Ankara to Doha, from Damascus to Tehran, policy planners are aiming at reaching “their piece” of Palestine, ironically at the expense of the Palestinian national authority.

Indeed, beyond the evaluation on tactical or legal grounds and who should be blamed, the picture on the strategic level is much more ominous. The launching of the “flotilla” timed up with two major developments, one by the moderates in the region backed by the United States and the international community and the other by the radicals in the region led by Iran and Syria. After repeated attempts to bring Israelis and Palestinians back to the table of negotiations over the past few months, Washington was close to achieving that goal with the help of moderate Arab governments and the European Union. The Palestinian Authority and the Israeli government were on their way to a sit down—directly or indirectly—to proceed at an advanced stage in the process. Saudi Arabia, Egypt, Jordan and other players were blessing the move cautiously. But this process was moving outside the control of Iran and Syria and their protégés in Gaza.

Hence sending activists via high seas to break the encirclement of Hamas was part of collapsing US and international efforts to resume the peace talks. Indeed as we all know, once the radicals trigger (and organize) a wave of “Jihadism” in the media and streets, no moderate will show up for discussions. And that’s what is happening as of today: a spiraling crumbling of the latest chance for peace talks.

This is not new: It is a modified repeat of previous manipulated incidents: The Hezbollah War in 2006, the Hamas coup of 2007, the Gaza war in 2008 and many similar successful maneuvers in the 1990s: obstructing the peace process by using militants wearing peace jackets. But the more ominous development this flotilla is camouflaging is a real land fleet bringing missiles and advanced weapons to Hezbollah from Syria to the Bekaa Valley.

Over the past weeks reports have abounded about Iranian long-range missiles shipped via Syria to Hezbollah and satellite images have shown terror bases in the vicinity of Damascus growing under Baathist protection. As soon as the attention of the international community began to focus on the flow of strategic weapons to Hezbollah, the “brotherhood of regimes” unleashed the Gaza flotilla across the Mediterranean. Seasoned geopolitical experts would rationally link the move to create an incident off the coasts of Gaza with the move to equipping Hezbollah with lethal missiles.

In the end we’re looking at two flotillas, the maritime one in the south being only a decoy for the land fleet to achieve its goal of war preparations in the north.

Gaza analysis: These were not 'peace protesters'

By Stephen Pollard, May 31, 2010
It’s depressing, but not in the least bit surprising, that the ‘condemn first, ask questions later (if at all)’ attitude towards Israel is as universal as ever.
To judge from the media coverage of what happened last night, you’d think that the IDF had attacked a defenceless group of peace activists almost for the sake of it, shooting indiscriminately and behaving like barbarians.
The full details of what happened are still to emerge. But what we do know is that the Israeli authorities first of all invited the convoy the offload its cargo in port and have it checked for banned goods.
When that was rejected, the IDF gave warnings that they should not proceed.
That, too, was ignored.
The soldiers then alighted on the ships, and this is where it is unclear who acted first. The IDF say they were attacked, those on the ship the reverse. But the more facts emerge, the more it seems – to put it mildly – that the so-called peace activists were hardly pacific souls taken unawares by the IDF.
Because these were not harmless peaceniks but hard core anti-Israel activists. On their departure from Cyprus they were filmed singing intifada songs and cheering the slaughter of the Jews.  And as for the groups sailing, the most prominent, the Turkish ‘charity’ IHH, is inextricably linked with Hamas, and is a supporter of radical jihad groups.
The loss of life is always to be condemned and regretted. But these people were no more harmless, unarmed peace protesters than the IDF, and the Israelis appear to have been if anything too naïve in treating them as such, rather than on boarding the ships and tear gassing the lot. As the IDF soldiers landed, they were met with the reality behind the misleading label of ‘peace protestors’ – violent extremism.
But would we expect the BBC and other media here to reflect the full picture? Plus ca change.

Cabinet: Navy raid clear act of self-defense
Prime minister convenes National Security Cabinet meeting following tragic results of operation on Gaza-bound ship. Ministers argue against sending flotilla's injured home, say they must be interrogated, prosecuted. Netanyahu: Flotilla was no peace sail
Roni Sofer
Latest Update:    06.01.10, 22:09 / Israel News
Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu ordered a National Security Cabinet meeting Tuesday evening, to discuss the ramifications of the tragic results of the Gaza flotilla raid.

Cabinet ministers argued that Israel should not allow the Turkish planes sent to retrieve those wounded in Monday's events, to do so.
Legal Waters
State: Petitions over raid of Gaza flotilla biased / Aviad Glickman
Human rights groups file High Court petition claiming Israeli army's raid violated international law. State prosecutor argues to the contrary, says petition is 'baseless and mendacious'
Full story

"They were not injured during a picnic, but during a violent clash with IDF forces. They must be held for further interrogation and if need be – prosecuted," said one of the ministers.

Cabinet Secretary Zvi Hauser said following the meeting that the cabinet "determined that restricting the entry of ships to Gaza, which is controlled by the Hamas terror organization, is a clear act of self-defense against the ongoing Hamas attacks on Israeli citizens and communities. This was the aim of the IDF operation against the violent provocation in high seas.

"The cabinet regrets the fact that there were casualties in this incident, but places the full responsibility on the elements which started the violent activity that put IDF soldiers in danger.

The National Security Cabinet convened at 5:30 pm, at the Prime Minister's Office. Netanyahu ordered the meeting prior to leaving Canada, where he was on a state visit, which he cut short once the events on board the Marmara unfolded.

"This was no peace sail, but a premeditated act of violence," Netanyahu told the ministers. "We have footage demonstrating exactly what our soldiers were facing, and the last thing you can say about that ship is that it was a peace sail.

"I visited soldiers at (the Chaim Sheba Medical Center at) Tel Hashomer and I heard how they faced terrorists with cold weapons – knives, clubs and axes - aboard that ship. Our soldiers acted bravely. We regret any loss of life – but we back our soldiers up fully.

The prime minister went on to explain to necessity of inspection of all maritime vessels heading to Gaza: "Operation Cast Lead taught us that weapons that find their way into Gaza are used against us."

"Yes, (Palestinians) smuggle arms through underground tunnels, but smuggling by sea mean utterly different volumes. Opening a maritime route to Gaza poses significant danger, which is why we insist on the blockade.

"We are aware of the international pressure in the respect, and that this policy is criticized, but it is imperative to Israel's security."

The cabinet is still in session and no details were given as to the ministers' demand.

'Erdogan out for more influence'
Meanwhile, the National Security Cabinet also the diplomatic crisis between Israel and Turkey that ensued the maritime fiasco.

Turkish Prime Minister Recep Tayyip Erdogan has warned Jerusalem "not to try Ankara's patience" – a stance both political and intelligence sources believe is meant to escalate the already tense relations between the countries further.

Intelligence sources believe Erdogan aims to utilize the latest crisis to garner more influence in the Muslim world, by siding with the Palestinians at the expense of his ties with Israel.

"This is a line he has been pushing for years," the ministers were told.

The minister must address several serious questions regarding the Navy's takeover of the Marmara: Did the operation falter due to intelligence failures or operational ones? Were all the military alternatives explored? in the operation's setup? Were did Israeli PR efforts fail?

Other issues the minister must address are the escalating relations with Turkey, the necessary measures needed in order to stop the "Rachel Corrie" – another aid ship bound for Gaza, and what – if anything - can be done against the flotilla detainees that refuse to identify themselves.

Perhaps the most burning question though, is what, if anything, can be done to rectify the blow Israel suffered in worldwide public opinion.

A source in the Prime Minister's Office told Ynet the Netanyahu has yet to decide whether to order an inquiry into the raid.

"Where and internal investigation, or any other probe, is necessary is irrelevant at this time," said the source. "The cabinet will review everything and decide on its actions accordingly."
