Future submarine capability[edit]

During 2006-2008 the Ula class was slated for modernisation. Most notably, new communication equipment (Link 11), new electronic warfare support measures and a periscope upgrade.[5] In May 2008, a contract for new sonars was signed, with the first submarine to have new sonar 21 months after that, and the last 52 months later.[3] Furthermore, Kongsberg was contracted in 2012 to upgrade the submarines' combat systems.[6] The Ula class will probably be kept in service until 2020.[3][7]

In 2012 the Norwegian MoD set 2014 as a deadline for deciding whether to further extend the operative life of the Ula class after their slated end-of-life in 2020, or to replace them with a new fleet.[8] In December 2014, the Norwegian Ministry of Defence made the decision to begin the process of replacing the Ulas. As part of that decision, the Ula-class submarines would be kept in service for a further five years, but would not exceed 35 years total service as that would be too costly.[9]

In 2016, two suppliers (DCNS and Thyssen Krupp) were shortlisted to provide competing options to replace the Ula-class boats. In February 2017, Thyssen Krupp was selected to provide four replacement submarines based on the Type 212-class for service entry starting in the mid-2020s. A firm build contract is anticipated in the first half of 2020. [10]

Naval Group Launches Second Offshore Patrol Vessel for Argentina

The second of the four Offshore Patrol Vessel (OPVs) ordered by Argentina has been launched at Piriou’s Shipyards in Concarneau (Britany). This launching comes ahead of schedule – 2 months before the contractual deadline – despite the adverse sanitary context. The two upcoming ships are also built by Kership (joint venture between Naval Group and Piriou) in Lanester. After the arrival of the A.R.A. Bouchard in Argentina on February 2020, the second OPV has been launched this Thursday 1st of October, 2020, in Piriou’s shipyards in Concarneau.

Signed on June 22nd, 2018 in Buenos Aires, the contract for the delivery of four multi-mission ocean patrol vessels for the Argentinian Navy came into force on February 13th, 2019. This contract covers the delivery of L’Adroit – a vessel commissioned at the end of 2011 and operated by the French Navy before being modernized to become the A.R.A. Bouchard – as well as the construction of three new units with an enhanced design (known as OPV 87). The three new vessels are specially adapted to navigation in iced waters of the Southern Ocean, through a reinforcement of their structure.

Naval Group is the prime contractor, in charge of the Program Management with the Argentinian customer and integration of the Polaris combat system. Involved in several military operations but also fisheries policy and maritime security missions, the Naval Group OPV’s design demonstrated its efficiency and the relevance of the innovations developed by Naval Group to serve navies and special forces. The Argentinian Offshore Patrol Vessels benefit from the innovations proposed by Naval Group and the sea-proven design operated by the French Navy.

VARD AMPHIBIOUS TRANSPORT FOR CHILE

Vard Marine has been selected to design an amphibious transport vessel for the Chilean Navy, to be built at the Asmar shipyard in Talcahuano.



The multipurpose vessel will be capable of undertaking operations throughout the Pacific and Southern Oceans, providing capabilities that include logistical support, search and rescue, troop and cargo movement and deployment, or humanitarian assistance and disaster relief operations. It will be based on an existing Vard 7 series design, and will be specifically adapted to the precise requirements of the Chilean Navy, incorporating the latest generation of integrated dock systems. This will allow for transport and deployment of a wide range of cargo in containers and vehicles, landing craft, helicopters and rescue boats for multiple mission sets.

Vard President Wade Carson explained that “this program will be our fourth successful collaboration with Asmar, including the design of the venerable AP 41 AQUILES, one of the vessels that, after a successful and historic trajectory, will replace the ESCOTILLÓN IV program […] Vard Marine has a long and successful track record in designing specialized vessels adapted to meet unique combinations of user requirements and operating environments. The award of this contract is an important step to further consolidate the company's position in the global naval market as a proven design of specialized customer-centric multifunctional vessels.”

O segundo navio de patrulha offshore OPV 87 argentino, ARA Piedrabuena, foi entregue hoje na presença do Capitão Víctor Ortiz, representante da Armada Argentina na França

O ARA Piedrabuena foi entregue hoje à Armada Argentina na presença do Capitão Víctor Ortiz, representante da Marinha na França, que também reconheceu o Comandante Gastón Vega em sua tomada de comando.

Esta entrega faz parte do contrato assinado pelo Naval Group com a Argentina em 2018 para a entrega de quatro navios patrulha multimissão. O ARA Bouchard (ex-L’Adroit) foi entregue em dezembro passado, dois meses antes do previsto. Com a entrega do ARA Piedrabuena, a primeira das três novas embarcações de patrulha construídas para a Argentina, o programa segue progredindo conforme programado e continuará a um ritmo de uma entrega a cada seis meses.

A tripulação de 44 pessoas da Armada Argentina foi treinada na operação e manutenção da embarcação por equipes do Naval Group e Kership, joint-venture entre Piriou e Naval Group.

Este segundo navio patrulha da série adquirido pela Armada Argentina, de construção nova, oferece os mesmos bens e características do primeiro, o ARA Bouchard. Algumas de suas características foram reforçadas para atender às necessidades da Armada. Mais bem armado e motorizado, equipado com sistema de estabilização ativa e propulsor de proa, também é comprovado no gelo, ou seja, adaptado para navegação nas águas frias da Antártica.

Jean-Claude Flandrin, Diretor do Programa, disse: “Apesar da situação sanitária global muito complicada e graças ao compromisso das equipes do Naval Group, Kership, Piriou e todos os seus parceiros industriais, conseguimos entregar este primeiro navio de patrulha projetado para a Argentina com pontualidade e também de seguir preparando o restante da série”.

O ARA Piedrabuena está equipado com o sistema POLARIS® e o sistema de link de dados táticos NiDL®, desenvolvido especificamente pelo Naval Group para missões de Estado no mar e comprovado pela Marinha Francesa.

O Navio de Patrulha Offshore é capaz de permanecer em alto mar por mais de três semanas, atingir uma velocidade de 20 nós e acomodar um helicóptero. Implementado por uma tripulação reduzida de 40 membros, também é capaz de acomodar cerca de vinte passageiros extras.

Argentine’s Third OPV – ARA Storni – Launched By Naval Group
The third of four Offshore Patrol Vessel 87 (OPV87) ordered from Naval Group by Argentina was launched today at Piriou Shipyards in Brittany.

After the recent delivery of A.R.A. Piedrabuena, the third OPV A.R.A. Storni was launched on Monday May 10th. The ship was partly built in Lanester by Kership Lorient and assembled in Concarneau by Piriou Shipyards.

This delivery is part of the contract signed by Naval Group with Argentina in 2018 to provide four multi-mission offshore patrol vessels. A.R.A. Bouchard (ex-L’Adroit) had been delivered in December 2019, two months ahead of schedule, and A.R.A. Piedrabuena, the first of the three newly-built patrol vessels, was delivered on April 13, 2021.

The third vessel of the series will offer the same assets and characteristics as the A.R.A. Piedrabuena. Better armed than the A.R.A. Bouchard, more motorized, equipped with an active stabilization system and a bow thruster, it is also “Ice proven”, i.e. adapted to navigation in the cold waters of Antarctica.

“The program continues to progress at a very steady pace, with the delivery on time of a vessel every six months, despite the global sanitary situation. The delivery of the A.R.A. Storni should take place in October this year, in line with the contract schedule.”

The Argentinean Offshore Patrol Vessels benefit from innovations developed by Naval Group and sea proven by the French Navy, which has operated L’Adroit in several oceans for six years for multiple maritime security operations, either alone or in cooperation with other Navies:

• Very high endurance and excellent sea-worthiness;
• A 360° visibility from the bridge and a unique mast for a panoramic radar coverage;
• The discrete and safe implementation in less than five minutes of fast crafts for Special Forces thanks to an ingenious ramp system at the bow of the patroller;

This range of ships also benefits from Naval Group’s expertise in information and command systems, allowing for extensive surveillance of the maritime space and the detection of suspicious behaviours. The A.R.A. Storni is equipped with the Polaris® system and NiDL® tactical data link system, specifically developed by Naval Group for state missions at sea and sea-proven by the French Navy.

The Offshore Patrol Vessel is able to stay on deep seas during more than three weeks, to reach a speed of 20 knots and to accommodate a helicopter. Implemented by a reduced crew of 40 members, it is also able to accommodate about twenty extra passengers.

El ARA Piedrabuena zarpó con rumbo a la Argentina

Aproximadamente a las 8 AM del 31 de mayo, el OPV ARA Piedrabuena (P-52) levantó anclas y zarpó desde el puerto de Concarneu, Francia, con rumbo a la Argentina. La embarcación, junto a su tripulación, se adentro en el Golfo de Vizcaya en el Atlántico Norte a una velocidad promedio de 15 nudos.

Al igual que el viaje realizado a principios de 2020 por el ARA Bouchard (P-51), el ARA Piedrabuena tendrá una navegación aproximada de 20 días en las que recorrerá 5 millas náuticas. En base a lo informado por la Armada Argentina, la embarcación realizará una primera escala en el puerto de Rio de Janeiro, Brasil, para proseguir su curso a la Argentina.



Fuentes consultadas, no han brindado mayores precisiones si el ARA Piedrabuena arribará primero a la Ciudad de Buenos Aires o proseguirá su curso hacía la Base Naval Mar del Plata (BNMP), apostadero natural de los nuevos Patrulleros Oceánicos de la Armada Argentina. La cuestión no es menor en base a los protocolos de cuidada sanitario y prevención contra el COVID-19.

El ARA Piedrabuena (P-52) es el segundo OPV 87 Clase Gowind construido por Naval Group para la Armada Argentina. La embarcación fue entrega a la institución el pasado 13 de abril, como parte de las preparaciones y alistamiento de la tripulación abordo.

A días de su arribo a la Argentina, restarán por incorporar las dos últimas OPV: ARA «Storni» P-53 y ARA «Bartolomé Cordero» P-54. En base a lo informado por un informe de la Jefatura de Gabinete de Ministros, el ARA «Storni» será recibido en el mes de septiembre de 2021. Por último, el ARA «Bartolomé Cordero», el cual ya fue botado recientemente, se sumará al resto de las unidades en el mes de marzo de 2022.
