Germany's new MG5 delayed by teething problems

Germany's first production batch of 1,215 new MG5 machine guns has been delayed by technical issues, the German Ministry of Defence (MoD) confirmed.

Ordered in June 2013, the MG5 (HK121) manufactured by Heckler & Koch (HK) is to replace the obsolete MG3 in service with the Bundeswehr.

First deliveries were scheduled from the end of July, but this has been pushed back to 2016 because of "irregularities that may require retesting", the MoD stated.

Under the 2013 framework agreement, Germany is to buy a minimum of 7,114 MG5s and up to as many as 12,733 at a cost of EUR118-240 million (USD113-270 million). Under that same agreement, 65 MG5s were ordered for trials under a low-rate initial production contract worth EUR2.76 million in July 2014, with the first production batch of 1,215 MG5s ordered on 17 March for EUR20.44 million.

Dutch mechanized brigade to be integrated into German panzer division

The Royal Netherlands Army's 43 Mechanized Brigade will be integrated into the Bundeswehr 1st Panzer Division, German Defense Minister Ursula von der Leyen and her Dutch counterpart, Jeannine Hennis-Plaschaert, told their respective parliaments on 15 September.

A formal agreement to this effect will be signed later this year, with integration work  starting at the end of the year or beginning of 2016, and the unit becoming operational at the end of 2019.

Before it is integrated into the 1st Panzer Division, 43 Mechanized Brigade will  be reinforced by German 414 Battalion, which will include a Dutch Leopard 2A6 tank company with 100 personnel based in Bergen-Hohne, Germany. The remainder of the 43 Mechanized Brigade will stay in the Netherlands.

To ensure commonality, Germany will upgrade the Netherlands' 16 remaining Leopard 2A6 tanks to A7 standard and pool them with its own Leopards 2 tanks.

The Netherlands will lease the tanks necessary to form a company of 18 Leopard 2s. The Dutch Army's 11 Airmobile Brigade is already integrated into the German Division Schnelle Kräfte rapid deployment force.

Hennis-Plaschaert described the planned integrated division as "another groundbreaking steo into Dutch-German cooperation... which will greatly improve European operational capabilities"

Germany's G36 cleared by trio of studies

  http://www.janes.com/article/55456/germ ... of-studies

Citar
The Bundeswehr's G36 service rifle and its manufacturers have been cleared by three investigative reports into the subject, providing a new twist to a complex saga.

These findings contrast with a solid year of criticism to the rifle, at the highest levels levels of German defence establishment, over its accuracy when heated.

While the first study criticises the Ministry of Defence  (MoD) for responding slowly and inconsistently to reports of issues with the G36, the second clears the manufacturer Heckler & Koch  (HK) of wrongdoing and the third finds no German operations were effected or soldiers wounded/killed through any shortcoming of the rifle.

The three studies were initiated by Defence Minister Ursula von der Leyen in March after an earlier investigation found the G36 significantly loses accuracy when its barrel becomes hot. Specifically, the composite holding the barrel in place softens when heated,  allowing the barrel to move and so reducing accuracy. In April Von der Leyen said that "the G36, in its current state has no future in the Bundeswehr". In September this year, she decided to fully replace the G36 by 2019.

Conducted by Klaus-Peter Müller, chairman of the supervisory board of Commerzbank, the first study examined the Mod's conduct and processes in the procurement of the G36. It criticises the MoD's responses to the issue, its control over procurement processes, and its product management. But it notes that measures have been taken to rectify the ministry's deficiencies, while recommending the establishment of a better compliance system.

The second study, conducted by an internal MoD commission, examines the ministry's business relationship with HK over the G36 with regard to regulation. It found "no clues for corruption or any other kind of legally relevant wrongdoing".

Yet the study states there should not have been a physical presence of MoD quality control at HK's G36 production site.

A verdade é que pelo menos dois dos três inquéritos eram conhecidos depois da publicação em vários media alemães. Um resumo mais completo, no passado dia 14, da televisão pública Deutsche Welle:
