Flight Trials of Helmet-Mounted Display

ROCHESTER,UK.--(BUSINESS WIRE)--March 29, 2005--Flight trials of the BAE Systems Striker helmet-mounted display sistem have begun on the Eurofighter Typhoon aircraft. The full development trial sorties marked the first flights of a binocular, visor-projected, night-vision-capable on a fighter aircraft.

Addictional trials are planned throughout 2005, and production-ready versions of the helmet will fly in the latter part of 2005- clearing the way for production for Typhoon Tranche 1 and Tranche 2 aircraf.

"The successful start of flight trials marks a significant success in the Typhoon helmet program and is a milestone in the development of display helmet technology," said Mike Austill, managing director of Avionic Systems for BAE Systems.

The Typhoon helmet-mounted display is a high-resolution, binocular system driven by powerful processor and graphics modules. Its helmet tracker is a high-speed, high-accuracy, low-latency optical system. The helmet displays "virtual head-up display" symbology and video imagery from the aircraft sensors and from a helmet-mounted, image-intensified night vision system.

The helmet's fully integrated design ensures the compatibility of head protection, fife support, and electro-optics, and also incorporates the fully integrated respirator for protection in nuclear, biological, and chemical warfare environments.

Prior to the start of flight trials, the helmet design passed a series of stringent tests, including impact and penetration to U.K. and European standards, 600-plus-knot windblast, and 600-plus-knot ejection. In addition, high "g" comfort and stability testing has been carried out on BAE Systems helmets supplied for the Hawk trainer aircraf.

Eurofighter Single-Seaters In Operational Service with the Luftwaffe

(Source: EADS Military Aircraft; issued April 11, 2005)

MUNICH/MANCHING, Germany --- EADS Military Aircraft has handed over the first single-seater operational Eurofighter aircraft to Fighter Wing 73 (JG 73) "Steinhoff" in Laage near Rostock.

This is the first of a further ten single-seaters that are still to be delivered to the operational wing in the course of the year. In addition to these delivery quantities, this year a further twin-seater will also be put at the wing's disposal. This was announced by EADS, the German and Spanish partner in the four-nation European programme, on Monday.

Through the single-seaters, the German Air Force is now in a position to extend the ongoing Eurofighter operational evaluation to also include this configuration of the aircraft and conduct practical tests to confirm fulfilment of the specific air force requirements. Furthermore, the mission pilots can now continue their tactical training on the single-seater Eurofighters. The twin-seaters that have already been in operational service for some time mainly serve as a means of conversion training for pilots being instructed on this latest-generation advanced flying weapon system.

The Eurofighter that has just been handed over bears the production number GS004 (GS standing for German Single-Seater) and is already the second single-seater Eurofighter to be delivered to the Luftwaffe. The first Eurofighter in this configuration originating from final assembly at Manching and destined for the Bundeswehr was ferried to the Air Force School of Engineering No. 1 at Kaufbeuren on 14 February 2005. There, the aircraft is serving to train technicians and ground crews on this new model for the German Air Force.

The handover of the single-seater on Friday means that 35 Eurofighters in all have now been delivered to the four partner countries: 31 twin-seaters and now four single-seaters as fully operational aircraft. During the current year, it is planned to deliver a further 39 aircraft to the partner nations. At the moment, operational evaluation is getting underway in all the partner countries’ air forces.

Additional to the Eurofighter aircraft already handed over to the customers, all 148 Tranche 1 production aircraft are currently in the process of construction. The production contract for the second tranche was signed by Eurofighter Jagdflugzeug GmbH and NETMA (NATO Eurofighter and Tornado Management Agency) on 14.12.2004.

The Military Aircraft Business Unit, which is an integrated part of the EADS Defence and Security Systems Division (DS), concentrates all the EADS capabilities in the areas of high-performance combat aircraft, unmanned combat air vehicles (UCAVs), manned mission aircraft and training aircraft and the ground support equipment for these systems.

EADS Defence & Security Systems, with revenues of about EUR 5.4 billion in 2004 and roughly 24,000 employees across ten nations, forms the defence pole within EADS. It offers integrated systems solutions to the new challenges confronting armed forces and homeland security units. It is active in the areas of military aircraft, missile systems, Intelligence, Surveillance and Reconnaissance (ISR) systems with manned and unmanned aerial vehicles (UAVs), battlefield management systems, defence electronics, sensors and avionics, and related services.

EADS is a global leader in aerospace, defence and related services. In 2004, EADS generated revenues of EUR 31.8 billion and employed a workforce of about 110,000.

Greek Government Rethinks Eurofighter Deal

(Source: Agence France Presse; issued April 9, 2005)

ATHENS --- Greece is reconsidering a project by the former Socialist government to buy 60 Eurofighter jets for its air force, the defence ministry said on Saturday.

The Eurofighter is built by a four-nation consortium involving the European Aeronautic Defence and Space Co (EADS), BAE Systems and Finmeccanica unit Alenia.

As both the Greek prime minister and defence minister are due to visit the US in the coming weeks the press here is speculating the government may choose the US F-16 instead.

"The government has so far taken no decision concerning the choice of company from which to buy the fourth generation jets. All options remain open," defence ministry spokesman Stephanos Guikas told AFP.

"A decision on the matter of our arms programme for the 2006-2010 period will be taken in the coming months," he added.

The former Socialist government's decision to buy 60 Eurofighter jets was frozen when the conservative New Democracy party won a general election in March 2004.

Greek Defence Minister Spilios Spiliotopoulos is to visit Washington in late April for what Guikas said would be a "political-military meeting for talks on bilateral relations between NATO and Greece".

Eurofighter Typhoon set to soar at Le Bourget 2005

(Source: Eurofighter GmbH; dated June 10, web-posted June 13, 2005)

PARIS/HALLBERGMOOS, Germany --- The Eurofighter Typhoon presence at the Paris Le Bourget Air Show 2005 is bigger and better than ever before, with this world-class next generation combat aircraft prominent both in the air and on the ground.

A Eurofighter Typhoon aircraft will feature at the Show with consortium partner Alenia, in combination with the skilled airmanship of Italian Air Force pilots, providing the Show-stopping air display. An Italian Air Force series production aircraft will also be situated on the static display area for viewing throughout the Show.

The Eurofighter pavilion houses a presentation area that demonstrates the aircraft’s capability and pivotal role in a network-centric battle environment. This theme will be further emphasised with a new and exciting audio/visual presentation scheduled to run concurrently throughout the week for welcome visitors. A full scale replica with a comprehensive weapon display, and a cockpit simulator, will demonstrate the weapon system’s outstanding capabilities.

Eurofighter partner EADS will present a full scale replica of the aircraft supported by an interactive display.

Following the successful completion of Tranche 2 negotiations at the end of last year the four-nation Eurofighter programme is now entering the most exciting and dynamic period of its life so far.

All 148 Tranche 1 aircraft are in final or advanced stages of production, which will ensure a sustained delivery rate to the customer throughout 2005. In April, the deployment of IS002 from Alenia’s final assembly facilities in Torino to 4° Stormo “Amadeo d’Aosta” at Grosseto, Italy, meant that all four partner air forces now operate series production single-seaters with Batch 2 standard.

These aircraft have PSP2 Capability (Production System Package) with Initial Defensive Aids Subsystem (DASS), Multifunctional Information and Distribution System (MIDS), Initial Direct Voice Input (DVI) and Sensor Fusion.

Over the past month, the flight testing of an upgraded standard of the Avionics product has been completed, providing operational evaluations of the updates to the Avionics – in particular RADAR, DASS and Sensor Fusion – for Batch 2 aircraft. A total number of eight Eurofighter Typhoon flights (10 hours) supported the QU2 PSQS (Preliminary System Qualification Statement) (plus nine Tornado flights), and thirteen Typhoon flights (sixteen hours) supported the Customer OTC (Official Test Centre) Mission Assessment (plus nine Tornado and four Hawk flights).

The Weapon System was evaluated thoroughly with seven 2v2 (i.e. two Eurofighter Typhoons against two ‘enemies’) Sensor Fusion flights, one 2v4 (against four enemies) Sensor Fusion flight and five dedicated DASS flights designed to fully test the avionics. The overall performance was encouraging considering the fairly aggressive operational testing conducted during the Mission Assessment, with the feedback from the operational pilots confirming their favourable impressions of the product.

In early 2005, Eurofighter Typhoon made its first transatlantic deployment. Under the ‘Exercise High Rider’ nickname, the Air Warfare Centre (AWC) conducts routine trials work on the United States western ranges, taking advantage of significant overland airspace, good weather and instrumented range infrastructure to maximise operational test and evaluation output from these facilities.

Exercise High Rider 10 took place at the United States Naval Air Weapons Range China Lake in California. Taking part in the deployment were the Harrier GR7 and Tornado GR4 aircraft of the AWC's Fast Jet and Weapons Operational Evaluation Unit (FJWOEU) based at RAF Coningsby and a Eurofighter Typhoon aircraft from the Typhoon combined test team.

The aircraft was deployed from BAE Systems Warton, crewed by a BAE Systems test pilot and a Typhoon Operational Evaluation Unit 17(R) Squadron pilot. BT005, a twin-seat series production aircraft, made the transatlantic crossing with the help of RAF VC10 and Tristar refuelling assets, before conducting an unaccompanied transit across the USA from Bangor Maine to China Lake, stopping to refuel at Little Rock Arkansas and Cannon Air Force Base, New Mexico. The Eurofighter Typhoon began flying again immediately after its arrival undertaking trials work to evaluate the aircraft's weapon system in an operational environment.

Exercise High Rider 10 recovered to the UK at the end of the deployment.

Typhoon Completes Successful Firing of ASRAAM

(Source: UK Ministry of Defence; issued June 15, 2005)

The RAF has recently celebrated a milestone in the development of its new Typhoon aircraft with news of the successful firing of an Advanced Short-Range Air-to-Air Missile (ASRAAM).

The trials, which took place during May, saw ASRAAM launched against targets at the Aberporth range on the Welsh coast. These were the first in-service missiles launched by Typhoon, with each successfully launched and guided to the target. Data from the tests have been analysed, confirming a successful trial where all the RAF's objectives were met.

Air Chief Marshall Sir Brian Burridge said: "This is a highly significant milestone in the development of this outstanding new aircraft. Typhoon will be at the heart of the RAF's future fighting capability. Weapons such as the ASRAAM will ensure that Typhoon is a potent force for the future."

ASRAAM is a next generation, short range, air-to-air missile which offers a great increase in performance over current systems, and provides combat superiority against all present and projected threats.

EADS CASA Military Aircraft Starts Eurofighter Heat Test Campaign in Southern Spain

(Source: EADS Military Aircraft; issued July 7, 2005)

MUNICH / MADRID --- EADS CASA Military Aircraft has just started long-term tests under operational conditions on a Eurofighter at the Spanish Air Force base of Morón (near Seville).

Following the Cold Environmental Trials carried out last winter near the Arctic Circle in Sweden, the instrumented production aircraft IPA4 and the mobile telemetry station were transferred from the EADS Military Aircraft Spain site at Getafe near Madrid to Morón, where an equally ambitious test programme is to be conducted.

As Eurofighter gives the user air forces an integrated Network Enabled Capability (NEC), which is indispensable for future operations among several Air Forces, the Spanish Air Force will actively support the tests by locating its MIDS (Multiple Information Distribution System) ground station at Morón and flying one or two operational Eurofighters in joint missions with the IPA 4. Moreover EADS CASA Military Aircraft will place its MIDS station at Talavera Air Base (near Portugal) and operate it from there. These circumstances will create the necessary network to conduct most favourable Data Link tests.

Morón in the south of Spain provides optimum conditions for the successful execution of the campaign. These include among other things the unusually high temperatures this summer, which will provide the proof that Eurofighter meets all the operational requirements, also under such extreme environmental conditions.

Furthermore, the proximity of the Atlantic Ocean offers flight corridors that also allow low-level supersonic flights, another common requirement for most of the planned flight tests.

With regards to the heat trials, EADS Military Aircraft Spain is continuing the test programme begun in the summer of 2004 but in the new aircraft configuration in line with the Block 2B design, which comprises the FLIR (Forward Looking Infra Red) sensor and the DASS (Defensive Aids Subsystems) on-board electronic self-protection system. The tests are taking place at approx. 43°C.

Along with this test series in the scorching sun of Spain there are additional test steps to be gone through in connection with "carefree handling" characteristics, in other words features that lighten the pilot's workload, such as the new automatic Manoeuvre Limitation System. This prevents the pilot from exceeding the boundary values determined by the flight parameters. Further test items are aircraft handling in the transonic range and acquisition of data on the aircraft's aeroelastic behaviour at high speeds (up to 750 kt).

The test programme will be examined in the course of 41 flights and numerous ground tests. To make optimum use of the flight operations during the test campaign, EADS Military Aircraft Spain has also planned to carry out in-flight refuelling with support from a Spanish Air Force C-130 Hercules.

Upon successful completion of the programme, this ambitious number of flights will have made an important contribution to punctual type acceptance of Block 2B.

The campaign is set to last until September 2005. A core team of 25 has been entrusted with carrying out the tests. As in other comparable campaigns, EADS Military Aircraft Spain will be cooperating closely with the Eurofighter partners in Germany, Great Britain and Italy as well as with the flight test centres of these countries and the operational units that already fly the Eurofighter.

EADS Military Aircraft, which is an integrated part of the EADS Defence & Security Systems Division (DS), concentrates all the EADS capabilities in the areas of high-performance combat aircraft, unmanned mission air vehicles (MALE) and unmanned combat air vehicles (UCAVs), manned mission aircraft and training aircraft and the ground support equipment for these systems.

My opinion only...
