 Russia's Admiral Kuznetsov Aircraft Carrier Is Back In Service!

The Russian Navy's sole aircraft carrier, Admiral Kuznetsov , has completed three months in dry dock, the Russian Ministry of Defence confirmed on 20 August. Admiral Kuznetsov was identified as being in refit at the end of May at the 82 Shipyard floating dockyard at Roslyakovo in Kola Bay, between Murmansk and Severomorsk. (...)

 Admiral Kuznetsov , which was launched in 1985, was planned to undergo a major five-year refit between 2012 and 2017, but barring occasional three-months periods has not had a major refit since its two-year refit between 1996 and 1998. Although over the past few years the carrier has been an increasingly regular sight in the North Sea and the Mediterranean, Admiral Kuznetsov has spent most of her service history moored alongside in Kola Bay.

The Russian Air Force is busy carrying out numerous airstrikes around Syria, leaving certain areas vulnerable to attacks from the Islamist rebels of both the Syrian Al-Qaeda group “Jabhat Al-Nusra” and the Islamic State of Iraq and Al-Sham (ISIS); this has created the need for the Russian Navy to intervene in this Syrian Conflict for the first time since they arrived in Tartous. Recently, the Russian Navy has positioned three naval vessels off the coast of Latakia in anticipation for their massive cruise missile assault that is likely to occur in the coming days, as the Syrian Armed Forces and their allies inch closer to the Jaysh Al-Fateh (Army of Conquest) controlled Al-Ghaab Plains of the Hama Governorate.

The Russian Navy's new Project 22160 patrol ships will be armed with the Kalibr-NK land attack cruise missile, according to Alexander Karpov, First Deputy Director General of Gorky Zelenodolsk Shipyard.

For Karpov the capability of the missiles was proved when Russia launched Kalibr-NK strikes from the Caspian Sea into Syria on 7 October: "The successful salvoes…demonstrated the firepower of these missiles. Besides, they take up little volume."

Meanwhile, at the Interpolitex-2015 exhibition in Moscow on 18-22 October the Project 22160 ship model was demonstrated at the United Shipbuilding Corporation stand displaying its aft module fitted the Kalibr-NK strike missile system in two containers, of four missiles each, which are raised vertically for launch.

Six of the 1,500-1,800 tonne Project 22160 vessels are due to be operated by the Russian Navy's Black Sea Fleet, with two vessels already under construction. The first vessel, Vasily Bykov , will be fitted with Kalibr-NK and will be handed over to the customer in 2017. The second ship Dmitry Rogachev is due to be commissioned in 2018. By the year 2022 the yard will have supplied all six ships. According to the Navy's plans, a group of Project 22160 ships will be formed at the Novorossiysk naval base on the Black Sea.

O jornal americano The New York Times publicou esta semana uma matéria informando que oficiais americanos estão preocupados com o posicionamento de navios russos, cuja localização pode indicar planos para cortar cabos de Internet de fibra óptica durante um conflito futuro.

O Times citou vários comandantes navais e oficiais de inteligência dos EUA que manifestaram preocupações sobre um incremento na atividade naval russa perto de rotas dos cabos de internet em áreas entre o Mar do Norte e no Nordeste da Ásia, bem como em águas próximas dos EUA.

O Times disse também que navios russos poderiam cortar os cabos em locais de difícil acesso, onde seriam difíceis de reparar. Outra preocupação é que os russos poderiam também grampear os cabos para ouvir as comunicações.

O Kremlin admitiu hoje que a televisão russa exibiu acidentalmente planos secretos sobre o torpedo nuclear que está sendo desenvolvido pela Rússia, noticiou a agência France Presse.

Dois canais televisivos pró-governamentais, a NTV e o Canal 1, mostraram um oficial segurando um documento confidencial contendo o desenho e os detalhes da arma nuclear, designada Status-6, concebida pela Rubin, construtora de submarinos sediada em São Petersburgo.

Os torpedos nucleares, uma vez disparados, criam “extensas zonas de contaminação radioativa que tornam insustentável qualquer atividade militar ou econômica durante um longo período de tempo”, diz o documento exibido, durante alguns segundos, na televisão.

As imagens foram obtidas durante a visita do Presidente russo, Vladimir Putin, acompanhado por altas patentes militares, à cidade de Sochi, junto ao Mar Negro.

As imagens foram para o ar na terça-feira e mais tarde apagadas pelos canais de televisão, mas vários ‘websites’ continuam a reproduzir a reportagem.

Dmitry Peskov, porta-voz de Putin, declarou aos jornalistas que “no futuro serão adotadas medidas preventivas para evitar que se repita o sucedido”.

O documento secreto foi exibido durante um encontro em que Putin falou sobre a prontidão das forças estratégicas nucleares russas para responderem a eventuais ameaças à segurança do país.
