A US missile defense test was aborted Dec. 7 after one of two SM-2 interceptor missiles (above) failed to launch. (US Navy file photo)A US missile defence test in the Pacific was aborted when one of two interceptor missiles failed to fire from a US Aegis class cruiser, the Pentagon has said.  
 
The Pentagon's Missile Defence Agency blamed the setback on an "incorrect system setting" aboard the USS Lake Erie which was supposed to launch the missiles almost simultaneously at two targets.  
 
"The incorrect configuration prevented the fire control system aboard the ship from launching the first of the two interceptor missiles," the agency said on Thursday in a statement.  
 
"Since a primary test objective was a near-simultaneous launch of two missiles against two different targets, the second interceptor missile was intentionally not launched," it said.  
 
A target ballistic missile had already been launched from the Pacific Missile Range in Kauai, Hawaii, and a Navy aircraft launched the second target, a mock aircraft.  
 
The Lake Erie, the destroyer USS Hopper and the Royal Netherlands Navy frigate TROMP tracked the targets until they fell in the ocean.  
 
The missiles that were supposed to intercept them were an SM-3 and an SM-2 missile.

Three of the ten Aermacchi MB-339PAN jets from the Italian Air Force display team, Frecce Tricolori, collided in mid-air in front of the audience while performing their 'pierced heart' (a.k.a. cardoid) formation. One aircraft crashed directly into the crowd [1]. Sixty-seven spectators as well as all three pilots were killed and 346 were seriously injured in the resulting explosion and fire.

EUA: Português obtém nacionalidade norte-americana depois de combater no Iraque

Washington, 12 Mar (Lusa) - Um militar português de 25 anos obteve hoje a  nacionalidade norte-americana depois de ter combatido no Iraque ao serviço dos F uzileiros dos Estados Unidos, onde ingressou em Setembro de 2004.

     Natural de Évora, o soldado Carlos Lopes ficou gravemente ferido em Novemb ro de 2005, quando um outro militar caiu de um edifício em cima dele, com todo o seu equipamento de guerra.

     A nacionalidade norte-americana foi atribuída a um total de 14 soldados, e ntre os quais uma mulher do Haiti.

     O governo dos Estados Unidos concedeu, desde Julho de 2002, a cidadania am ericana a mais de 26 mil estrangeiros que estiveram nas Forças Armadas.

     "Ao tornarem-se cidadãos dos Estados Unidos, vocês honram todos os imigran tes que prestaram e prestam serviço nas Forças Armadas", afirmou o director do S erviço de Cidadania e Imigração, Emilio González, durante a cerimónia de Juramen to de Fidelidade à Bandeira dos Estados Unidos.
