24 FEBRUARY 2021

South Korea to begin work on light aircraft carrier in 2022

by Gabriel Dominguez & Dae Young Kim

South Korea’s Defense Acquisition Programme Administration (DAPA) announced on 23 February that work on the Republic of Korea Navy’s (RoKN’s) future next-generation light aircraft carrier is slated to officially start in 2022 and be completed by 2033.

Citing a decision made the previous day by the country’s Defense Project Promotion Committee, DAPA said that about KRW2.3 trillion (USD2.07 billion) has been tentatively earmarked for the project, which was previously known as LPX-II but has now renamed CVX.

The RoKN unveiled in January a revised conceptual design for its future light aircraft carrier featuring a twin-island arrangement. Work on the carrier project is now set to officially begin in 2022 and be completed by 2033, according to DAPA. (RoKN)

The agency pointed out that the total project cost “will be reviewed/confirmed through a feasibility study” set to be conducted by the Ministry of Economy and Finance.

DAPA said the CVX project is aimed securing the country’s the first light aircraft carrier to “suppress provocations in disputed waters” and to quickly respond to “various security threats” through the use of short take-off and vertical landing (STOVL) aircraft.

The latest developments come after the RoKN unveiled a revised conceptual design of the carrier on 3 January. The latest design, which confirms that the vessel will not have a ski-jump, features a twin-island arrangement.

The computer-generated imagery (CGI) also appeared to confirm that the service plans to operate Lockheed Martin F-35B Joint Strike Fighters from the vessel. Naval helicopters, somewhat similar in appearance to the Sikorsky/Lockheed Martin MH-60R Seahawk, can also be seen on the carrier.

The RoKN pointed out, however, that the latest conceptual design can be further revised during the basic and detailed designed stages.

South Korean navy commissions first KSS-III-class, SLBM-capable submarine
by Gabriel Dominguez & Dae Young Kim & Matteo Scarano

The Republic of Korea Navy (RoKN) has commissioned its first locally developed, diesel-electric attack submarine (SSK) capable of deploying submarine-launched ballistic missiles (SLBMs).

Named Dosan An Chang-ho (pennant number SS 083), the 83.5 m-long boat, which is the RoKN's first of a planned fleet of nine KSS-III-class submarines, entered service in a ceremony held on 13 August at the facilities of Daewoo Shipbuilding and Marine Engineering (DSME) at Okpo on Geoje Island.

The RoKN commissioned Dosan An Chang-ho , its first KSS-III-class SSK, in a ceremony held on 13 August at DSME's Okpo shipyard on Geoje Island. (RoKN)

Equipped with locally made lead-acid batteries and an air-independent propulsion (AIP) system featuring hydrogen fuel cells, Dosan An Chang-ho is expected to be operationally deployed from August 2022 after undergoing a series of operational performance and capability evaluations, according to an RoKN statement.

Fitted with noise-reduction technology, the submarine, which displaces 3,358 tonnes when surfaced and 3,705 tonnes when submerged, has a stated maximum speed of about 20 kt, a cruising range of 10,000 n miles, and can accommodate a crew of 50, according to Janes Fighting Ships .

Launched by DSME in September 2018, Dosan An Chang-ho , which has a beam of 9.6 m, is now the largest submarine in the RoKN's inventory: about 18 m longer and 3.3 m wider than the service's 1,800-tonne KSS-II-class boats.

It is equipped with an active and passive sonar suite from LIG Nex1, including bow cylindrical, flank, intercept, ranging, and towed arrays, as well as the Hanwha Systems Naval Shield Integrated Combat Management System (ICMS). It also features the Safran attack periscope and optronic mast, and the Indra Pegaso radar electronic support measurement (RESM) system.

Demoramos nós no MLUzinho de uma Fragata mais tempo que os Sul Coreanos levam a construir um SSK de 3358 Tons.

September 9, 2021, by Fatima Bahtić

South Korean shipbuilder Daewoo Shipbuilding & Marine Engineering (DSME) has launched the sixth Daegu-class (FFX-II) frigate at its Okpo shipyard built for the South Korean Navy.

The sixth vessel named Pohang hit the water on 8 September just four months after the fifth vessel was launched.
