Mozambican Air Force to get eight overhauled MiG-21s

Written by Guy Martin, Monday, 04 November 2013

The Mozambique Air Force will soon receive eight MiG-21s from Aerostar in Romania once their overhaul is complete, together with an L-39 jet trainer and two Festival light aircraft. This comes on the heels of the delivery of a Hawker 850XP business jet. According to Air Forces Daily, Aerostar is refurbishing six MiG-21bis and two MiG-21UM trainers for the Mozambique Air Force and is also providing trainer aircraft on which it is training MiG-21 pilots. This would give the Air Force a jet capability not had in years, as its MiG-21s have fallen into disrepair and are grounded.

Two MiG-21s in Mozambique Air Force colours have been spotted at Aerostar’s facility in Bacau, Romania, including one single and one two-seat example. It is believed that one of the MiG-21s destined for Mozambique was involved in an incident on August 27, catching fire after experiencing a technical problem in flight. According to Air Forces Daily, Mozambique Air Force students have been training at Bacau and at the Boboc Air Force Base for nearly a year, undertaking basic training on Aerostar’s Festival light aircraft and an overhauled Mozambican Aero Vodochody L-39ZO jet trainer. The Mozambican Air Force has apparently bought two Aerostar Festival side-by-side light aircraft, which were ready for delivery to the country in September. It is not clear whether the eight MiG-21s are ex-Mozambican examples or were aircraft in better condition acquired from another source. The latter is more likely.

The Mozambique Air Force is slowly rejuvenating, considering that until recently it was almost entirely inoperable, suffering poor serviceability since independence from Portugal in 1975 and the collapse of the Soviet Union and its financial support in the early 1990s. A recent acquisition came in September this year when the Air Force took delivery of a second hand Hawker 850XP business jet, built in 2005. Another important acquisition came in July 2012 when Portugal delivered a second Cessna/Reims FTB-337G Milirole utility aircraft to the country, as part of the CTM (Cooperação Técnico-Militar) technical military cooperation agreement between Mozambique and Portugal. This agreement also includes training and the Portuguese Air Force is working with the Mozambique Air Force on pilot and ground crew training in both countries.

Indeed, Portuguese advisors are training aircrew and mechanics at the recently formed Escola Prática de Aviação (EPA – School of Practical Aviation) at the Air Force’s base at Maputo-Mavalene International Airport. The two FTB-337Gs are used for medical evacuations, maritime surveillance and pilot training, alongside a Cessna 152 and a Piper PA-32 Seneca, acquired around 2011. A Cessna 172 is also used for training at the EPA, according to Air Forces Daily.

8 MIG-21
1 Aero L-39 Albatros
3 Emb-312 Tucanos (Supostamente a ser entregues pelo Brasil)
2 Antonov An-26
2 FTB 337-G
1 Hawker 850XP
2 Aerostar R40S Festival
1 Cessna 152
1 Cessna 172
1 Piper PA-32

Moçambique é o primeiro cliente e operador do Mwari:

Mozambique revealed as Mwari launch customer
(17 de Março de 2023)
Citação de: Guy Martin / defenceWeb
Mozambique's military is the launch customer for Paramount's Mwari, which has been spotted in the southern African country in Mozambican markings.

Photos of the aircraft, apparently in Cabo Delgado province, have emerged online, with the aircraft bearing registration FA-402 (formerly ZU-MWA). Flight tracking data showed the aircraft flying around Nacala at the end of January.

ZU-MWA is the third Ahrlac built, after two prototypes, and is one of two pre-production aircraft. It first flew in April 2022 and was subsequently added to the South African register before heading to Mozambique.

An Ahrlac prototype was in mid-2021 tracked flying in Mozambique, presumably on demonstration trials, giving the first indication of an impending order. Then, at the September 2022 edition of the Africa Aerospace and Defence exhibition, Paramount Aerospace revealed that it was about to deliver its first Mwari to an African launch customer. Flight International reported that this took place in December, with the second aircraft due for delivery in February.

Paramount in September 2022 said four aircraft were on the production line at the Wonderboom Airport factory and there were orders for nine of the aircraft, from two customers.

Mike Levy, chief executive of Paramount Aerospace Industries, told Flight International that the company would soon be fitting weapons to the launch customer's aircraft, but did not disclose what these would be.

(...)

Although the Mwari's launch customer is Mozambique, Paramount is targeting potential clients around the world. In mid-2021 the aircraft, redesignated the Bronco II, took part in flight trials in the US as it competed for a competition for a new Armed Overwatch aircraft, but in 2022, US Special Operations Command selected the AT-802U Sky Warden. Nevertheless, for the Mwari to compete in such an international competition is a notable achievement.

Flight International reported there are strong sales prospects from at least two other countries, and it is likely that the aircraft’s production rate will be increased over the next year.

Paramount has over the last few years provided a significant quantity of military equipment to Mozambique's armed forces (FADM), including refurbished Gazelle, Mi-8/17 and Mi-24 helicopters, Marauder armoured personnel carriers, and most recently refurbished Let-410 and CN235M transports.

Paramount’s Mwari racking up flying hours in Mozambique while weapons integration progresses
(14 de Setembro de 2023)
Citação de: defenceWeb
As the launch customer for the Mwari intelligence, surveillance, reconnaissance (ISR) and strike aircraft, Mozambique has accumulated over 70 hours of flying on the type, which Paramount is hoping to sell to other African and European customers.

This was revealed by Paramount Aerospace Industries (PAI) at the Defence, Security Equipment International (DSEI) 2023 exhibition currently underway in London. The company said with deliveries underway to the Mozambican Air Force, it has been recently revealed that the Democratic Republic of Congo (DRC) has ordered several Mwari platforms. Mozambique has ordered three aircraft, and the DRC six.

Paramount at DSEI gave an update on the Mwari’s integration of advanced weapons systems. Weapons testing and certification are expected to commence towards the end of the fourth quarter of this year/early first quarter of 2024, to be undertaken by Paramount Aerospace Industries, “ensuring vertical integration and manufacture of the latest rendition of the company’s own intellectual property (IP).” The specifics of newly adopted mission and weapons systems will be disclosed at a later date.

Paramount said additional integration of modern command, control and communications base systems architecture further enables the Mwari to serve as a critical link between aircraft, ground forces and forward-operating bases (FOBs). “Advanced technologies are leveraged to transmit next-level intelligence and real-time analysis, ensuring that the Mwari can play a key role in coordinating responses, redefining the very nature of precision-strike,” Paramount said in a statement.

Mwari demonstrates operational impact in Mozambique
(23 de Setembro de 2024)
Citação de: defenceWeb
Mozambique's military is the launch customer for Paramount's Mwari multi-role aircraft, and deployed the aircraft operationally in northern Mozambique in December 2022. Since then, the aircraft has played a key role in counter insurgency operations, providing reconnaissance and surveillance support.

After accumulating a substantial 400 flying hours, the first Mwari deployed in Mozambique has returned to Paramount's aircraft production facility at Wonderboom Airport for its major OEM (original equipment manufacturer) inspection (C check).

On most aircraft, the C check is typically carried out every 20-24 months or after a specified number of flight hours are flown, in this case 400. It entails inspecting systems, cleaning and servicing and conducting minor structural inspections.

As part of its contract with Mozambique, Paramount completed pilot training with air crews from Mozambique. The company said that new groups of crew members started their training with Paramount last week.

Mozambique ordered three Mwari aircraft, and the Democratic Republic of Congo (DRC) subsequently bought six. Paramount is optimistic about the Mwari's prospects in the armed overwatch market, noting that global air capability spending will reach over $476 billion over the next five years, with the Armed Overwatch/Intelligence, Surveillance and Reconnaissance (ISR) market estimated to provide $32.3 billion of opportunities.

The Mwari is the first new clean-sheet manned military aircraft in South Africa since the Rooivalk attack helicopter. First flight of the Experimental Demonstrator (XDM) was in July 2014, followed by the Advanced Demonstrator (ADM), which was built for testing weapons and mission systems.
