:conf:

Rheinmetall offers to close Bundeswehr's mobile SHORAD gap

Rheinmetall is proposing solutions to close the Bundeswehr’s short-range air defence capability (SHORAD) gap, especially for countering saturation attacks by unmanned aerial vehicles (UAVs). To fill this gap, the company said in a 30 September press release that it is offering a sensor mix consisting of various radars and electro-optical reconnaissance and surveillance assets and effectors including missiles, its Skyranger Boxer with a 35 mm gun firing air burst munition (ABM), and eventually high energy lasers (HELs).

Rheinmetall demonstrated its Boxer Skyranger system against UAVs at its Ochsenboden firing range in Switzerland on 18–19 September 2018. (Rheinmetall)

During a press briefing of German journalists and Janes in Bonn on 30 September, Thomas Wehrhahn, who heads Rheinmetall’s German ground-based air defence (GBAD) activities, identified the trend “with considerable risk potential” of multiple UAV swarms saturating air defence systems, which could not be “meaningfully” countered by missiles or the Bundeswehr interim solution of a Boxer equipped with a 120˚ radar and 40 mm grenade machine gun (GMG) firing ABM. Instead, Wehrhahn offered a gun-based solution that is all-weather-capable and able to engage many more targets simultaneously. He said Skyranger, with a 3,000 m range, is the appropriate system for countering UAV threats like China’s Harwar-Zhanfu H16-V12, which is armed with two automatic grenade launchers and an air-to-ground missile, the latter giving it a stand-off capability.

Germany orders Israel’s Trophy active protection system for its Leopard 2 tanks

COLOGNE, Germany — The German and Israeli defense ministries have signed an agreement for the purchase of the Rafael-made Trophy active protection system for the Bundeswehr’s Leopard 2 tanks, the two governments announced Feb. 23.

The deal, inked Feb. 22, will see the defense system, which shoots projectiles at incoming anti-tank munitions, installed on a company’s worth of tanks by 2025; that’s 17 operational vehicles plus one reference type for testing.

Krauss-Maffei Wegmann is the contractor to install Trophy components on the tanks in the course of an upgrade from the A6-A3 configuration to the A7-A1 version, according to a memo to the German parliament by defense officials in late January that requested funding for the project.

The missive was approved by lawmakers at the time, paving the way for the agreement with Israel and manufacturer Rafael. The 23 Trophy sets and 586 interceptors sought by Germany come with a price tag of $48 million. Leopard-maker KMW stands to get roughly double that for the integration work, which will leave the government with 18 tank hulls no longer needed after the upgrade.

Israeli Defense Minister Benny Gantz called the Trophy system a “product of Israel’s groundbreaking defense industry,” with Germany’s nod representing an “expression of confidence” in the two countries’ defense cooperation.

The Bundeswehr, or German military, decided to equip its tanks with an active protection system because “modern anti-tank guided missiles pose a significant threat,” defense officials wrote to lawmakers. The current effort to introduce Trophy is meant as a “first step” toward wider use of similar technology, the memo stated.

German defense officials considered Trophy, which is already in use on Israeli and American tanks, the most advanced and operationally proven system available on the market, they told lawmakers.

Bundeswehr Rifle Debacle: Germany Set to Select HK416 A8?

HK416 & HK433 (Concamo)

Germany’s rifle debacle continues with the German government looking set to award the Bundeswehr rifle contract to the only other contender – Heckler & Koch. With Haenel disqualified after infringements of Heckler and Koch’s patents (for the magazine and water drainage holes in the receiver) were found, Germany’s options narrowed dramatically. In October the Bundeswehr’s contract with Haenel for the MK556 was officially withdrawn.

Our friends at Soldat & Technik report that Heckler and Koch’s HK416 A8 is likely to be selected as the Bundeswehr’s replacement for the G36. Speaking at a German Parliament Defense Committee meeting Parliamentary State Secretary for Defense Peter Tauber is reported to have said that the bids for the tender have been re-evaluated and an independent investigation of the alleged patent infringement had confirmed Haenel had infringed Heckler and Koch’s patents. The infringement investigation saw evidence collected from Haenel’s German headquarters in December.

Tauber explained that Haenel had launched a bid to have one of Heckler and Koch’s patents nullified but that this would only impact on the patent within Germany not elsewhere. With Haenel’s MK556 officially excluded this leaves only the HK416. Haenel are expected to challenge the decision in the courts which may delay any future contract award until the matter is settled.

The contract would call for delivery of 20,000 rifles per year for five years, however, funding has not yet been allocated to the procurement of the new rifles and it isn’t seen as a defense priority by the German government. The decision is due to be made in the second quarter of 2021.

Back in October, German media reported that the Bundeswehr’s final report on the 18 month long rifle trials found that the HK416 was the more accurate of the rifles submitted.

Within Heckler and Koch itself, the company is now entirely owned by private investor Nicolas Walewski and has undergone some restructuring. This has reportedly improved the German government’s relationship with the company.

Germany now finds itself in the uncomfortable position of having launched an effort to replace a rifle it believes flawed only to be forced to award the replacement contract to the same company despite previously selecting a rival design.

Regardless of the final outcome, the tender and contract award process has uncovered fundamental flaws and failings within Germany’s procurement process. It is clear that the Bundeswehr will continue to use the G36 for some years to come, even once the contract is settled.

Curioso que é o número exacto de CCs que o Exército queria para juntar aos 37 Leos existentes. ::)

The last remaining German army aviation UH-1D got a special livery for its farewell tour across the country as this trusty model is being phased out. The same aircraft will be preserved in a museum with this final paintjob.

The video shows a takeoff at "Hungriger Wolf" airfield in Schleswig-Holstein.
