Air Force leaders have not backed off their push to retire the A-10 in the Pentagon's fiscal 2016 budget request while the service has significantly boosted its investment in developing a next generation bomber, according to service budget documents.
The Air Force is requesting about $137.8 billion in its fiscal 2016 proposed budget as part of the overall $585 billion the Pentagon has requested for 2016. The $137.8 billion represents a slight budget reduction from the $138.3 the Air Force received in 2015.
Air Force leaders have said the budget has forced the service to balance maintaining the aging fleet while also paying for the development of next generation aircraft like the Long Range Strike Bomber.
Congress has flatly denied the Air Force's previous attempts to retire the A-10 fleet that Air Force leaders have said is necessary in order to free up funding and manning for the introduction of the F-35A.
The A-10 is a popular close-air-support, ground attack aircraft that has received support from prominent lawmakers to include Sen. John McCain, R-Arizona, chairman of the Senate Armed Services Committee.  Notably, the A-10 is flying combat missions in Iraq against Islamic State in Iraq and Syria (ISIS) forces.
E continua. Já não é Estupidez mas sim Burrice.

Watchdog: Air Force 'doctored the data' to make A-10 look bad

By Kristina Wong - 02/09/15 03:57 PM EST

A government watchdog group on Monday accused the Air Force of manipulating data to skew the record of the A-10 "Warthog" when it comes to civilian casualties and friendly fire deaths in Afghanistan.

Recently declassified Air Force data said the A-10 attack jet has killed more U.S. troops in friendly fire incidents and more Afghan civilians than any other aircraft flown by the U.S. military, USA Today reported last week.
But the Project On Government Oversight (POGO) said the statistics were skewed to bolster the Air Force's campaign to retire the A-10 in favor of the costlier F-35 Joint Strike Fighter.

“The Air Force cherry picked and doctored the data that it released in an attempt to build a false narrative against the A-10,” said Mandy Smithberger, director of the Straus Military Reform Project at POGO.

“The Air Force is resorting to dirty tricks because it can’t make a valid argument against the A-10, proven to be reliable, effective, and a favorite of troops on the ground," she said.

SPANGDAHLEM, Germany — Two years after they were pulled out of this U.S. airbase in the German countryside, American "tankbuster" aircraft are once again parked outside its hangars.

The A-10 Thunderbolt II planes — 12 in all, accompanied by 300 airmen — are part of a six-month U.S. operation in Europe amid concern about an emboldened Russia and the rise of militant groups.

"Today we focus on numerous and emerging threats to regional security and stability: threats from Russia, ISIS, and others throughout Europe and North Africa," 3rd Air Force commander Lt. Gen. Darryl Roberson said at Spangdahlem Air Base on Wednesday.

The U.S. and its NATO allies have found themselves locked in a tense standoff with Russia, sparked by the ongoing crisis in Ukraine. The West has accused Moscow of supplying fighters and tanks to the pro-Russia rebels in eastern Ukraine, something the Kremlin denies.
Então não foi o "Maravilhoso" F-35, mais capaz na colocação de armas na "muche" e com um ranking melhor que o A-10 relativamente a danos colaterais?

An enormous Cold War-era bomber which first flew in 1962 has been resurrected from the Air Force's scrap heap to serve the nation once more.
The B-52, nicknamed Ghost Rider, was mothballed seven years ago at the Davis-Monthan Air Force Base in Tucson, Arizona - the so-called boneyard where decommissioned planes are kept in storage.
It took to the skies once more on February 13 after months of painstaking restoration, which saw damaged parts such as the fuel lines and hydraulic steering systems replaced to make her airworthy once more.

The Air Force has begun moving A-10 attack jets into backup status, even as it continues to use the plane in airstrikes against the Islamic State.

Air Force officials announced the move on Friday. Eighteen planes will be placed into “Backup-Aircraft Inventory” (BAI) status, with the possibility of 18 more being mothballed later this year. The designation means the Thunderbolt II planes are considered to be undergoing maintenance or otherwise unable to fly.

The decision already is under fire by some members of Congress, who are frustrated by the Air Force’s plan to retire the plane, nicknamed the Warthog. Eight Republican senators sent a letter to new Defense Secretary Ashton B. Carter, saying that moving A-10s to backup status now is effectively a “‘back-door divestment” of the plane, even though Congress voted to stop the Air Force from retiring the plane in 2015.

The head of the Senate Armed Services Committee is promising to scrap an Air Force plan that would move 18 A-10 attack aircraft toward retirement by moving them to backup status.

“We will be working hard and most likely reverse that decision in the defense authorization bill,” Sen. John McCain (R-Ariz.) said Friday, according to The Arizona Daily Star.

He derided the plan as a “compromise that was made last year in response to the Air Force’s misguided attempt to retire all the A-10s.”
The Air Force has attempted to retire its A-10 “Warthog” fleet in recent years to save around $4 billion.

Last month, Sen. Kelly Ayotte (R-N.H.), a fierce A-10 advocate, led a group of eight Republican senators in a letter to new Defense Secretary Ashton Carter asking him to halt the Air Force’s moves until he and Congress can “fully scrutinize” the plan.

In addition to the nine planes shifted into backup at Davis-Monthan, six were grounded at Moody Air Force Base in Georgia and three at Nellis Air Force Base in Nevada.

The crews of two military planes that collided mid-air near Fort Bragg in December had failed to complete visual scans of their flight paths and were too reliant on automated anti-collision systems, according to an Air Force investigative report obtained by The Fayetteville Observer.

The Army and Air Force planes, which were carrying 13 people on separate training exercises, declared emergencies and landed safely, the report said.

The Army Special Operations Command C-27J and the Air Force C-130H collided about eight miles south of Camp Mackall around 8:22 p.m. on Dec. 1.

The C-27 was traveling from the Laurinburg-Maxton airport to two drop zones for simulated airdrops. The C-130 was performing an escape maneuver to egress the Luzon Drop Zone after completing a visual Container Delivery System airdrop, according to the report, which the newspaper obtained through the Freedom of Information Act.

The right wingtip of the C-27 grazed the right underside of the C-130 at the nose gear door, which damaged the gear door and tore the flare dispenser hood from the fuselage.

The C-27's vertical stabilizer, or tail, crossed in front of the nose of the C-130 and between the prop arcs of the C-130's No. 3 and No. 4 engines. The vertical stabilizer came into contact with the front of the C-130's right external fuel tank and continued its impact down the inboard side of the No. 4 engine and leading edge of the right wing near the engine mount, according to the report.

There were no injuries to the eight Air Force crew members of the C-130 or five Army crew members of the C-27, according to the report.

The C-130 sustained damage to the leading edge of the right wing and No. 4 engine. Officials estimate the damage and cleanup for the C-130 at $1.8 million.

The C-27 sustained significant damage to the top third of the vertical stabilizer and rudder. Damage estimates are still being calculated.

The Accident Investigation Board, which investigated the collision, found "clear and convincing evidence that the cause of the mishap was a breakdown in visual scan resulting in insufficient clearing of the aircraft flight path by both aircrews," according to the report.

U.S. removing 24 Boeing AH-64 "Apaches" from Europe

Washington plans to transfer 24 attack helicopters from Germany to Alaska over the next two years as part of a larger cost-saving aviation plan, according to a senior Army official, but the move could send mixed signal as the U.S. tries to reassure European allies.  Maj. Gen. Gary Cheek, Army assistant deputy of staff for operation, plans and policy, told reporters that 24 AH-64 Apache helicopters from Germany will join a company, or 12, unmanned Green Eagles in Alaska by 2017.

Only one U.S. combat aviation brigade (CAB) is permanently stationed in Europe, the 12th CAB, headquartered in Katterbach. With budget-driven efforts to draw down its presence in Europe on the one hand and a need to deter Russia on the other, the U.S. is walking a fine line.

The Air Force is developing an upgrade to its long-range, high-altitude B-2 Spirit stealth bomber allowing it to better detect increasingly sophisticated enemy air defenses at longer ranges, service officials said.

Modern air defense systems are improving at a rapid pace as computer processing power grows exponentially. U.S. aviation leaders have grown concerned that these advancing air defenses will make stealth aircraft like the B-2 more vulnerable.

The B-2’s stealth technology, as it was configured and envisioned in the 1980s, did not fully anticipate or account for these advances that allow air defenses to detect aircraft through a wider range of frequencies and detect them at further ranges. Engineers have developed high-end air defense systems that are increasingly mobile and able to utilize digital, networked processing technology.
