ATK to Build Canister Gas Generators for the Kinetic Energy Interceptor

 MINNEAPOLIS and ROCKET CENTER, W.Va. --- Alliant Techsystems has received a developmental contract for the Canister Gas Generators of the Kinetic Energy Interceptor (KEI). Terms of the contract were not disclosed. Northrop Grumman is the prime contractor on KEI for the Missile Defense Agency (MDA). Work on the contract will be performed at the company's Allegany Ballistics Laboratory in Rocket Center, W.Va.  
 
ATK is an industry leader in the design, development and production of gas generators for missile systems. The company has previously provided similar systems for the U.S. Navy's Trident, Poseidon, Polaris, Sprint and currently Tomahawk missile systems.  
 
KEI is a next-generation missile assigned the task of boost/ascent phase intercepts as part of MDA's global layered defense strategy. As an integral part of boost phase defense, it is critical that the KEI launch rapidly out of its canister. The ATK-developed gas generators will nearly instantaneously create the proper pressure inside the canister to eject the missile, at which point the first stage rocket motor, also built by ATK, will ignite.  
 
ATK will supply 29 gas generators for KEI development and test programs. The first static firing for the Stage 1 Rocket Motor is scheduled for FY06 while the gas generator eject test is scheduled for FY07. During the eject test, the generators will propel an inert "slug" out of the canister that is matched in weight and center of gravity to the actual interceptor. Additional generators will be used in full-rate production.

Kinetic Energy Interceptor Successfully Completes First Wind Tunnel Test

 TUCSON, Ariz. --- Raytheon Company recently completed the first in a series of risk-reduction high speed wind tunnel tests of the Kinetic Energy Interceptor (KEI) missile in preparation for future flight testing.  
 
KEI is the Missile Defense Agency's (MDA) mobile, multi-mission, high- performance interceptor component of the layered Ballistic Missile Defense System, with Northrop Grumman Corporation serving as the prime contractor for the MDA - Kinetic Energy Directorate.  
 
The testing focused on acquiring aerodynamic force and moment data, as well as high frequency pressure and acoustic data on the second stage vehicle. A key part of the test was to obtain data to allow selection of a nose shape for the missile. The data was gathered at the Polysonic Wind Tunnel in St. Louis, Mo. All test objectives were achieved and results matched predictions.  
 
"This type of early aerodynamic characterization of our design approach provides essential data and insight to anchor our analytical models and guide our design implementation. With this insight we are able to maximize performance while reducing program risk and enhancing our mission assurance," said Newton Johnson, Raytheon's KEI chief engineer. "Characterization tests like these are critical to achieving the performance challenges of boost phase intercept. This test demonstrates both technical objectives and the Raytheon / Orbital Sciences team's commitment to development excellence and meeting customer expectations."  
 
The test was conducted in March under the direction of Orbital Sciences Corporation, a primary partner with Raytheon on the KEI interceptor. Orbital was responsible for the test, including requirements development, model design, test support and data reduction.  
 
Raytheon Missile Systems of Tucson, Ariz., is the KEI interceptor lead under subcontract to Northrop Grumman. In addition to Orbital Sciences, Raytheon's key suppliers on the KEI interceptor include Alliant Techsystems, Aerojet Corporation and Rockwell Collins Corporation.
