USS Indiana (BB-58) fires a salvo from her forward 16/45 guns at the Kamaishi plant of the Japan Iron Company, 250 miles north of Tokyo. A second before, USS South Dakota (BB-57), from which this photograph was taken, fired the initial salvo of the first naval gunfire bombardment of the Japanese Home Islands. The superstructure of USS Massachusetts (BB-59) is visible directly behind Indiana. The heavy cruiser in the left center distance is either USS Quincy (CA-71) or USS Chicago (CA-136)

The 5"/25 (127 mm) battery aboard the U.S. Navy battleship USS New Mexico (BB-40) prepares to fire during the bombardment of Saipan, 15 June 1944. Note the time-fuze setters on the left side of each gun mount, each holding three "fixed" rounds of ammunition; the barrels of 20 mm machine guns at the extreme right; and triple the 14"/50 (34.5 cm) guns in the background.

Montana Battleships – Size Matters in the Huge Legend of the Montana Class BB

Reputation can be just as daunting as reality, and never is that truer than during wartime. When the enemy is frightened of what he might encounter on the battlefield or at sea, what he does encounter is often not what he imagined.

That was indeed the case with the Montana Class Battleships, intended for the U.S. Navy in World War Two. Not a single  Montana ever hit the water, but the boats are still infused with almost mythical, legendary abilities that bear little resemblance to cold, hard facts. They were certainly not the boats that would, in one fell swoop, vanquish the enemy and win the war.

Russian salvage ship Kommuna

Kommuna is a submarine salvage ship in service with the Russian Navy's Black Sea Fleet. A double-hulled catamaran, she was laid down at the Putilov Factory (now the Kirov Factory) in St. Petersburg in November 1912 as Volkhov. The ship was launched the following year, and commissioned on 14 July 1915. She was renamed Kommuna on 31 December 1922. Having served in the Russian Imperial, Soviet, and Russian Federation navies through the Russian Revolution and two World Wars, she is the oldest ship still in service with any navy (excluding such honorary commissioned ships as USS Constitution and HMS Victory).

Monitor encouraçado, ou simplesmente Monitor, foram navios de bordo baixo, sem mastros, com propulsão a vapor, fortemente blindados, geralmente com um ou duas torres giratórias dotadas de canhões de pesado calibre.

he Scharnhorst was a German capital ship, which belonged to Nazi Germany’s Kriegsmarine. Alongside the Gneisenau of the same class, the Scharnhorst marked the new era of German naval expansion.

Armed to the Teeth
She was laid down in June 1935, launched on 3rd October 1936, and completed in January 1939 at the Kriegsmarinewerft dockyard, Wilhelmshaven.

The ship was armed with 11 inch C/34 guns in triple turrets on its main battery, with plans of replacing the guns with six 15 inch SK C/34 guns. The plans for replacement was, however, never executed.
