TCG Anadolu has been floated on 4th May 2019. It is important to note that it is a technical procedure and the official launching of the ship.

TCG Anadolu is being constructed on a floating dock and the keel blocks under her hull need to be relocated. She will be taken back to the dock after the keel blogs have been relocated and the construction will continue.

The ship was floated 4 days after she suffered a fire. The fire broke out as some isolation material couth fire when welding was done nearby. Although there is no visible damage from the outside, the fire must have been damaged parts of the ship. Since the construction of the ship is continues the repair of the damaged parts won’t be much difficult.

Turkish navy receives fourth and last Milgem corvette

Lale Sariibrahimoglu, Istanbul - Jane's Defence Weekly
01 October 2019

Turkish Naval Forces Command (TNFC) received its fourth and last Ada-class (Milgem) anti-submarine warfare corvette, TCG Kinaliada (F 514), on 29 September at a commissioning ceremony held at Istanbul Naval Shipyard.

"Recent developments around the world and the Mediterranean Sea have shown us that we have to be much stronger in the seas, just as we are in other areas," Turkish President Recep Tayyip Erdogan said during the ceremony.

He said Kinaliada would differ from the previous three corvettes as it will be equipped with Turkey's Roketsan-built Atmaca (Hawk) anti-ship cruise missile, which is intended to replace the navy's AGM-84 anti-ship missiles. The Roketsan- and Havelsan-built Advent ship management system will also be installed for the first time in Kinaliada , he added.

Other state-owned local companies have also performed major work on Kinaliada : STM Defence has provided design, construction, and engineering activities, while Aselsan has provided gun and sensor systems for the ship.

Erdogan claimed that Turkey has become one of 10 countries able to develop, build, and maintain a warship using exclusively domestic means.

"We will soon build our own warplanes, just as we have built our own UAVs [unmanned aerial vehicles [and] ATAK [attack] helicopters. If they woke the sleeping giant, they will suffer the consequences," he said, referring to Turkey being expelled from the US-led F-35 Joint Strike Fighter programme.

The Milgem project reached a local industrial content level of 70%, with 50 Turkish companies taking part as subcontractors in the project, Erdogan noted.

67 years ago today, the Turkish Navy suffered its biggest peacetime casualty when submarine TCG Dumlupınar (ex USS Blower) sunk at Nara point, in Çanakkale Strait.

TCG Dumlupınar and her sister boat TCG 1. İnönü were returning from NATO exercise. At 02:15 in the morning, Swedish flagged merchant ship M/V Naboland and TCG Dumlupınar encountered at Nara point,  the narrowest and difficult to navigate part of the Strait.  The civilian ship hit the submarine at starboard bow, just aft of the forward diving planes. The submarine rolled to port with the force of the impact and sunk immediately. 5 submarines who were at the sail during the collision were the only survivors. The rest of the crew was trapped inside.  She sunk to 85 meters.

22 sailors trapped in the aft torpedo compartment were able to release the submarine’s sunk buoy. Submarine rescue and salvage ships were rushed from the main naval base in Gölcük after the incident. But all efforts to reach the submarine and rescue the survivors failed cause of very strong water currents and insufficient equipment. All efforts to rescue the trapped man failed.

Since that fateful day, on every 4th of April, we remember those that have a watery grave were no rose will grow.

The first indigenous frigate of Turkey to be commissioned by 2023

The contract for the procurement of the 5. MILGEM (National Ship) (I-Class Frigate) which is the first ship in this concept has been signed between the Turkish Presidency of Defence Industries and STM A.Ş. as of the 27th of September 2019 and the project calendar has been launched.

The integration of hundreds of local companies brings the new Turkish frigate to life

STM, a leading Turkish defense firm, which has been conducting warship construction and modernization activities at home and abroad, has carried out successful works with nearly 300 system providers and more than 400 subcontractors within its projects.

To date, STM has been the main subcontractor for the first 4 ships of the MILGEM Project, the Test and Training Ship Project (TCG UFUK A-591), The New Type Turkish Submarine Project (Type 214TN), Preveze Class (Type 209) Submarine Half-Life Modernization Project, Fleet Support Tanker Project with Pakistan and Pakistan Navy’s Agosta 90B Submarine Half-Life Modernization Project.

The first of the I-Class frigates, Istanbul, which is the continuation of the MILGEM Project, will have a higher locality rate than previous ships.

The I-Class Frigate Project was started with existing domestic companies that have worked for the MILGEM Class corvettes Project previously.

To increase the locality rate, new local companies were included in the project, which is capable to meet the specified technical requirements of foreign products/systems.

Currently, two-thirds of the around 80 subcontractors are domestic companies. The majority of STM’s suppliers involved in the project located in the Istanbul and Kocaeli regions. There are subcontractors in Ankara, Izmir, and Eskişehir as well.

Integrated work and coordination with subcontractors allows these companies to further develop their systems for future projects.

The goal of the localization rate has increased

While the MILGEM (ADA Class) corvettes reach nearly 72 percent locality rate in the platform systems (except the main propulsion system), it is aimed to increase indigenization at least 75 percent for the I class frigates.

The I-Class frigates are 13 meters longer than ADA Class corvettes and equipped with enhanced weapons and systems.

STM is planning to export I-Class frigates to the foreign countries, as we have seen in ADA Class corvettes before.

The first of the I-class frigates, TCG ISTANBUL is under-construction in Istanbul Naval Shipyard. The ship is expected to be launched in January 2021. Following the equipment integration activities, it is planned to start harbor acceptance tests in May 2022, sea trials in January 2023, and commissioning in September 2023.

STM keeps working on all kinds of design, engineering, and system-material procurement activities related to the ship’s construction and equipment.

22 JULY 2020

Turkish intelligence-gathering ship starts sea trials

by Cem Devrim Yaylali

The Turkish Navy’s first dedicated intelligence-gathering ship has started sea acceptance tests. Ufuk (A 591) was observed sailing in the Gulf of Izmit on 18 July.

The future TGC Ufuk , Turkey’s new intelligence-gathering ship, is pictured sailing in the Gulf of Izmit on 18 July. The vessel is currently undergoing sea acceptance tests. (Oğuz Eroğuz)

The new ship was designed by STM and built at Istanbul Shipyard under a contract awarded in 2017. The vessel was laid down in 2018 and launched on 9 February 2019.

Ufuk is derived from the MilGem (Ada-class) corvette design, but features a different main propulsion system and changes to the superstructure.

It features the same hull dimensions as the Ada class, with an overall length of 99 m, a beam of 14.1 m and a draught of 3.6 m. However, Ufuk is expected to be at least 100 tonnes heavier than the Ada corvettes at around 2,400 tonnes.

Unlike the Ada class, the intelligence-gathering ship has no hangar or armament – although it is equipped with a flight deck to support a 10-tonne helicopter and will be equipped with some small calibre machine guns for self-protection (although these have not yet been installed).

Other changes include the addition of an all-diesel main propulsion system, whereas the Ada-class corvettes have combined gas turbine and diesel engines. The top speed of Ufuk is more than 18 kt, which is considerably slower than the 29 kt top speed of the Ada-class corvettes.

The ship’s main mission systems are being supplied by Aselsan.
