Armed trawler NRP Santa Maria, of Faial class
In 1943, Portugal received 8 armed trawlers from UK. In 1945, 4 were returned and the another 4 bought. Finally, in 1948 another 2 were received. They served as ASW coastal escorts, minesweepers, patrol boats and survey vessels. Initially, they were armed with 1x 76mm dp, 2/3 Oerlinkons x 20mm, machine guns, 2 racks and 2 mortars for depth charges. Came from Tree ( 1 ) , Dance ( 1 ) and Isles ( 6 ) classes, also last 2 were requisitioned trawlers, but in Portuguese Navy they were grouped in the same class.
