Cumprimentos,

Escribano Mechanical & Engineering presents new lightweight remote weapon station ASPIS

16 SEPTEMBER 2020

Escribano Mechanical & Engineering has developed ASPIS, its new remote weapon station for naval and land use. This RWS has a compact size that confers it a weight of less than 90 kg, being the lightest RWS on the market. It is also equipped with a 7.62 mm M240 automatic gun and a Gatling M134D machine gun of similar calibre.

ASPIS is a very light Remote Weapon Station, suitable for land platforms such as armoured vehicles. It can support and operate a 7.62 mm M240 automatic machine gun.

ASPIS includes advanced features present in the Guardian and Sentinel remote weapon stations, including two-axis stabilisation, a target tracking system and automatic tracking. Its electro-optical sensor has an uncooled thermal camera, a high-sensitivity visible camera and a laser range finder.

This system offers versatility for day and night operations and includes an advanced fire control system with high firing accuracy for long and short distances.

Collaboration with FERRI:

Thanks to its advanced features, the ASPIS RWS can be used on both unmanned land and naval surface platforms (USV). This versatility allows its integration into the Victoria unmanned vessel, developed by the Spanish company FERRI.

This new collaboration agreement between the two companies represents an ideal solution to enhance the security in maritime missions since it allows the detection of standardised NATO targets over 13 km away.

This solution represents an important technological advance that will improve the protection of coasts and borders against several types of threats.

Malaysia evaluates options for second batch of Littoral Mission Ships
by Ridzwan Rahmat

A computer-generated image of Damen’s Stan Patrol 6211 concept. The Royal Malaysian Navy is considering a 68 m variant of this concept, known as the Stan Patrol 6811, as a contender for the Littoral Mission Ship Batch 2 project. (Damen)

The Royal Malaysian Navy (RMN) has begun an initial process to evaluate possible vessel types for its second Littoral Mission Ship (LMS) project.

Multiple industry sources close to the process have confirmed with Janes that the service is currently evaluating proposals from four stand-alone shipbuilders, and a joint venture between Malaysian company Destini, and Netherlands-based shipbuilder, Damen.

The four proposals are namely a 70.7 m patrol boat concept from US shipbuilder Swiftships, a 68 m offshore patrol vessel (OPV) concept from Damen known as the Stan Patrol 6811, a 70.2 m patrol vessel from German shipbuilder Fassmer, and a 70 m patrol boat from Malaysian company Preston.

Meanwhile, the proposal that has been forwarded by the joint venture between Damen and Destini is an 83 m vessel that is very similar to the OPV ordered for the Malaysian Maritime Enforcement Agency (MMEA), a contract for which was announced in January 2017.

The proposal from Swiftships has an overall beam of 11.3 m, and is powered by four MTU engines. It can be equipped with a 40 mm cannon in the primary position.

The design that has been submitted by Damen is a 68 m variant of the Stan Patrol 6211 concept. The OPV can similarly by equipped with a 40 mm naval gun in the ‘A’ position, and 12.7 mm machine guns for point defence.

France to arm future OPVs with RAPIDFire Naval CIWS
by Victor Barreira

The 10 offshore patrol vessels (OPVs) to be acquired for the French Navy under the Patrouilleurs Océanique (PO) programme will be armed with the Thales/Nexter RAPIDFire Naval multirole close-in weapon system (CIWS), Commander Ghislain Deleplanque, head of the French Navy’s Protection & Safeguarding Office, Future Naval Programs, revealed during the Defence iQ's OPV International online conference.

The RAPIDFire Naval CWIS is capable of engaging threats such as UAVs, helicopters, ground-attack fighters, cruise missiles, fast patrol boats, and sea-skimming missiles. (Thales)

The PO programme was formally launched in June by the French Ministry of the Armed Forces, with design activity currently being carried out by Naval Group. An acquisition and construction contract has yet to be placed.

The RAPIDFire Naval CIWS developed by Thales and Nexter comprises a non-penetrating gun mount fitted with the CTA International 40CTAS (40 mm Cased Telescoped Ammunition System) and an optronic fire-control system, an ammunition magazine for around 140 ready-to-fire rounds, gun control equipment and an automatic ammunition handling system. It can function either in an integrated or autonomous mode.

The gyrostabilised gun has a firing rate up to 200 rds/min with a typical burst against air threats of up to 10 anti-aerial air burst rounds, and an effective range up to 4,000 m and up to 2,500 m against surface threats using point detonating, air burst, and armour-piercing fin-stabilised discarding sabot rounds.

The 10 OPVs are scheduled to be commissioned between 2025 and 2029. They will have an overall length of around 90 m, a displacement of around 2,000 tonnes, and will carry a crew complement of 40.
