Russia may build 115,000 tonne Aircraft Carriers by 2020
The Russian industry will be able to build aircraft carriers having a displacement of 110,000-115,000 tonnes by 2020, Deputy Prime Minister Dmitry Rogozin said on the Rossiya-24 round-the-clock TV news channel on Tuesday. “When we build new shipyards and a huge dry dock in the Far East, if there is such a contract, it will be possible to create an aircraft carrier having a displacement of 110,000-115,000 tonnes. We will be capable of doing that starting from 2020,” Rogozin said

On 28 July the Russian Navy (VMF) commissioned the Project 22350 frigate Admiral Gorshkov , the day before its debut during the Naval Day parade. The ship is the first in class of new blue water frigates for the VMF, according to Vice Admiral Viktor Bursuk, deputy chief of naval armaments. “We will operate four Gorshkov-class surface combatants,” he said.

The Admiral Gorshkov has a full displacement of 5,400 tonnes, a length of 135 m, a beam of 16 m, and a draft of 4.5 m. Its armament suite comprises 16 3M55 Oniks anti-ship missiles (ASMs) or 3M54/3M14 Kalibr ASMs/land attack missiles, a 9K96 Poliment-Redut naval air defence system, an RPK-9 anti-submarine rocket launcher, two 3M89 Palash close-in weapon systems, and an A-192 130 mm naval gun. The frigate also carries a Ka-27PL anti-submarine helicopter. The Admiral Gorshkov is powered by a combined diesel and gas turbine engine, producing a maximum speed of 30 kt. The ship has a range of 4,500 n miles and an endurance of 30 days. It has a crew of 180-210.

A military source told Jane's the Admiral Gorshkov has already been assigned to the Northern Fleet’s 43rd Missile Ship Division.

Jane's has also learned that sea trials of the second Project 22350 frigate, Admiral Kasatonov , are scheduled for late 2018.

The source also reported that the Severnoye Design Bureau (SPKB) started design work on the upgraded Project 22350M frigate in 2018. “The navy is planning to build a larger series of modernised [Project 22350] ships and to receive the first upgraded frigate in 2026,” the source said.

The floating dry-dock where Russian aircraft carrier Admiral Kuznetsov was being upgraded has ‘sunk completely’, damaging the vessel and potentially killing workers according to Russian media.

“The floating dock has already sunk completely,” a source told TASS. It was earlier reported that the floating dock sank partially.

According to latest reports, four people were seriously injured in the incident and another is reportedly missing.

The accident reportedly happened as the Admiral Kuznetsov was to be taken out of the dry dock. The ship has now been towed to the nearby Sevmorput Yard No 35, yard press spokesman Yevgeny Gladyshev told Interfax. He makes clear that a power outage was what caused the accident.

United Shipbuilding Corporation’s chief, Alexei Rakhmanov, said to state media:

“Obviously when a 70-ton crane crashes on the deck there could be damage, but preliminary reports show that the damage that the ship has suffered is not significant.”

There has been several cases of power outages all over the region recently, including in the cities of Severomorsk and Murmansk.

The carrier has a history of trouble. In November and December 2017, the carrier lost one Su-33 and one MiG-29KR, when both jets reportedly ditched into the sea. Problems with arresting gear were cited as the cause. In 2009, the aircraft carrier also lost a sailor when a fire broke out due to a short circuit.

The carrier started an overhaul and modernisation in the first quarter of 2017. This is expected to extend its service life by 25 years.

Spain to refuel Russian warship on return from Syria despite new sanctions

The Russian cruiser Marshal Ustinov will be refuelled in Spain today after operations in Syria, despite fresh sanctions against Russia.

The American government, backed by statements from NATO officials, recently announced additional sanctions against Russia over its ongoing occupation of Crimea and its interference in eastern Ukraine.

Last year, Russia had to withdraw a request for three warships to dock at the Spanish port of Ceuta for refuelling, following concern among NATO allies however that has not happened this time. Spain is frequently under pressure from NATO allies not to allow the refuelling of the Russian warships bound for Syria.

    — David Parody (@dparody) November 9, 2018

Luke Coffey, Director of the Douglas & Sarah Allison Center for Foreign Policy, said here:

“In October 2016, after mounting international pressure, Spain withdrew its military support for the Russian navy. Between 2011 and 2016, Spain had granted Russian navy vessels—including destroyers, frigates, amphibious assault ships, even an attack submarine—regular use of Spanish ports to resupply and refuel. Now, it has been reported that Spain will once again welcome the Russian navy into its ports.

It is not the time for a NATO member to welcome the Russian navy into port when most NATO members are increasing economic sanctions against Russia, expelling Russian diplomats, and bolstering security in Eastern Europe against the Russian threat of aggression. The U.S. should once again work with like-minded European partners, especially the U.K., and pressure Spain not to restart its military assistance to Russia.”

Tomorrow NATO & EU member Spain will refuel and resupply the Russian Navy’s war machine in Ceuta:

    -cruiser Marshal Ustinov
    -tanker Dubna
    -tug SB-406

The Marshal Ustinov just participated in Russian operations in Syria.

What is NATO, EU or Trump Admin going to do about it? 👇🏻 https://t.co/8jI4oHzEDS
