Russia Reduces Procurement of Ivan Gren Class Landing Ship to Focus on Mistral Analog Lavina

According to Moscow-based online newspaper Lenta, the Russian Navy is about to reduce the procurement of project 11711 Ivan Gren class large amphibious assault ship under the state program. The Russian Navy was originally planning to procure six vessels in this class but procurement will actually stop after the Peter Morgunov (Pyotr Morgunov), the second unit which keel has just been laid. Russia will instead focus on the "Avalanche" project, a Russian analog to the Mistral class.

These amphibious vessels can support beach landing of up to 300 marines, 40 armored personnel carriers or 13 tanks and carry the Kamov Ka-29 type helicopter on the deck. The landing ships are armed with a 76-mm naval gun, two 30-mm AK-630 antiaircraft mounts and multiple artillery rocket systems.

"The Pyotr Morgunov large landing ship is planned to be transferred to the Navy in 2018, after the completion of the vessel building and all stages of testing. The project’s lead ship - the Ivan Gren is in the final stage of construction and will be delivered to the Navy after trials at the end 2015," head of Navy’s shipbuilding department Vladimir Tryapichnikov told reporters.

The Ivan Gren class can accomodate two helicopters and is fitted with a 76mm caliber cannon, two AK-630 antiaircraft guns, and multiple launch rocket systems. The ship displacemes 5,000 tons.

The Russian Navy will receive by 2020 the first new-generation landing ship that will be many times heavier than the Ivan Gren class vessels and will be able to carry several helicopters, Tryapichnikov told reporters earlier on Thursday.

"The construction of new-generation large landing ships will be launched within the next five years, and these ships will many times surpass in displacement the Ivan Gren and Pyotr Morgunov large landing ships, have higher landing force compatibility and will be able to carry not one, but several helicopters," Tryapichnikov said.

According to him, the first ship of this class is to be built by 2020. "It will be a new project for the ‘large landing ship’ class," he said.

During the ARMY-2015 defense exhibiton, it was made public that this new project was called "Avalanche": Krylov State Research Center developed the Avalanche project of amphibious assault ship as a replacement for the cancelation for the Mistral class deal with France.

"Krylov Central Scientific Research Institute is developing an alternative to the two Mistral LHDs. Avalanche will have a displacement of 24,000 tons, even more than the French ship" - a spokesman said.

Its cruising range will be 5,000 miles at a speed of 18 knots, max speed - 22 knots, with a crew of 320 sailors. The ship will be able to accomodate 500 marines and 50 armored vehicles. According to the source, Avalanche will be able to carry 16 helicoptersof types Ka-27, Ka-29 and Ka-52K for ASW, SAR and Strike missions. It is also expected to have on board six landing craft project 11770 Serna or six amphibious assault craft project 03160 "Raptor". The ship is set to be armed with a AK-176M gun mount and AK-630M-2 "Duet" CIWS. It will also be fitted with the new Pantsir-M Surface Ship Air Defense system.

"Kommuna" is a submarine-salvage ship in service with the Russian Navy's Black Sea. She is the oldest ship still in service with any navy in the world (excluding such honorary commissioned ships as "USS Constitution" and "HMS Victory"). Laid down in St. Petersburg in 1912 as the "Volkhov", she was renamed the "Kommuna" on 31 December 1922. She has served the  Russian Imperial,  Soviet and Russian Federal navies through the Revolution and two world wars until now.

Vai dar que falar.

Not Really, é um submarino russo que em 1916 colidiu com um vapor sueco.

A empresa que descobriu o submarino gosta de lançar rumores sensacionalistas.

Another angle of the same incident. These are Soviet-era URPK-5 Rastrub missiles (NATO codename SS-N-14 Silex), first introduced in 1965, which are really a torpedo carried by a missile. It seems that the torpedoes fell off and the missiles  continued on their merry way. The warship is the "Ladny" frigate, commissioned on February 25, 1981. The incident happened during a Navy Day parade in Sevastopol. More information and videos:

The sides completed talks on the termination of the Mistral delivery contract, Vladimir Putin's aide said.

MOSCOW (Sputnik) — Russia and France have agreed the terms of the settlement of the contract on delivery of two Mistral-class helicopter carriers to Russia, which have been suspended by Paris, a Kremlin official said Thursday.

"The talks have been completed, everything is settled — the schedule and the amount, which Paris will repay to Moscow," Vladimir Kozhin, President Vladimir Putin's aide on military-technical cooperation, told RIA Novosti.

"I hope that an agreement on the termination of the contract will be signed very soon, and we will be able to announce the sum that France will pay us," Kozhin said.
