Tendo vindo a público notícias recentes sobre a aquisição de mísseis e bombas no valor de centenas de milhões de dólares, e quase a título de urgência, fiquei surpreendido com a aquisição de 500 AIM-9M SIDEWINDER. Se já há melhor, inclusive de fabricação indígena israelita, pergunto-me para que servirá tal quantidade de mísseis "menos bons"...
Será que o baratucho compensa?
Ou será que bons amraam é o que interessa e os sidwinders menos recentes são para alvos mais fáceis?

.Em relação aos misseis o sidewinder é um missil infra-vermelhos de curto alcance e o AMRAAM é um missil de longo alcance com radar, são misseis para situações diferentes, pois ainda em 2003 entrou ao serviço o missil mais recente da familia sidewinder, o AIM-9X.

O que eu estranho é o facto de se comprarem AIM-9M e não AIM-9X, ainda para mais quando se produz localmente Python IV e V.

Será aí que eu quero chegar. Pergunto-me se a superagilidade dos mísseis de curto não será overkill em cenários reais. O combate decidir-se-á com os amraam e os sidwinder destinar-se-ão a alvos baratos ou menos ameaçadores, que não necessitarão de mísseis mais evoluídos.

1)O AMRAAM não funciona tão bem a curtas distancias como o Sidewinder.
2)O AMRAAM depende do radar para encontrar o alvo, ao passo que o Sidewinder não.
3) Muitas vezes as rules of engagement em determinado cenário impõe mesmo contacto visual
Agora se será necessária a versão "x" isso depende do que está do outro lado, mas será sempre uma vantagem ter o ultimo brinquedo claro. Digamos que a grande vantagem do "x" sobre o "L/M" será qd se enfrentam dogfighters mais ageis, se o alvo a derrubar for um avião de ataque, bombardeiro, patrulha, transporte ou outro...

Creio que as compras deles devem ter a ver com análises que os serviços de informações fazem no que respeita a uma previsível ameaça.
Se a Siria for controlada, e o numero de armas que eles têm disponíveis também for, então a opção pelo numero em vez da qualidade, faz bastante sentido.

The total value, if all options are exercised, could be as high as $308 million. The Government of Israel has requested a possible sale of 90,000,000 gallons of JP-8 aviation jet fuel and 42,000,000 gallons of diesel fuel. The estimated cost is $308 million. This proposed sale will contribute to the foreign policy and national security of the United States by helping to improve the security of a friendly country that has been, and continues to be, an important force for political stability and economic progress in the Middle East. The proposed sale of the JP-8 aviation fuel will enable Israel to maintain the operational capability of its aircraft inventory. The diesel fuel will be used for ground forces vehicles and other equipment used in keeping peace and security in the region. Israel will have no difficulty absorbing this additional fuel into its armed forces. The proposed sale of these two types of diesel fuel will not affect the basic military balance in the region. The Defense Energy Supply Center is unable to identify the vendors at this time due to the competitive bid process for the supply sources(s). There are no known offset agreements proposed in connection with this potential sale. Implementation of this proposed sale will not require the assignment of any additional U.S. Government or contractor representatives to Israel. There will be no adverse impact on U.S. defense readiness as a result of this proposed sale. This notice of a potential sale is required by law; it does not mean that the sale has been concluded.

The Government of Israel has requested a possible sale of 200 AIM-120C-7 Advanced Medium Range Air-to-Air (AMRAAM) missiles, containers, components, spare/repair parts, publications, documentation, personnel training, training equipment, contractor technical and logistics personnel services, and other related support elements. The estimated cost is $171 million. Israel’s strategic position makes it vital to the United States’ interests throughout the Middle East. US policy has been to promote Middle East peace, support Israeli commitment to peace with other regional Arab countries, enhance regional stability, and promote Israeli readiness and self-sufficiency. It is vital to the U.S. national interests to assist Israel developing and maintaining a strong and ready self-defense capability. This proposed sale is consistent with those objectives. Israel will maintain its qualitative edge with a balance of new weapons procurement and upgrades supporting its existing systems. Israel, which already has these munitions in its inventory, will have no difficulty absorbing these additional missiles. The principal contractor will be: Raytheon Missile Systems Corporation, Tucson, AZ There are no known offset agreements in connection with this proposed sale. Implementation of this proposed sale will not require the assignment of any additional U.S. Government and contractor representatives to Israel. The Government of Israel has requested a possible sale of 30 RGM-84L BLOCK II HARPOON Anti-Ship missiles with containers and 500 AIM-9M SIDEWINDER Short Range Air-to-Air Infrared Guided missiles, spares and repair parts for support equipment, training, publications and technical documents, U.S. Government and contractor technical assistance, and other related elements of logistics and program support. The estimated cost is $163 million. This proposed sale will contribute to the foreign policy and national security of the United States by helping improve the security of a friendly country that has been, and continues to be, an important force for political stability and economic progress in the Middle East. The proposed sale of the missiles will enable Israel to maintain its operational capability and to match similar existing regional capabilities. The proposed sale will not alter the military balance in the region. Israel has previously purchased both HARPOON and SIDEWINDER missiles and will be able to absorb and effectively utilize the additional missiles. The principal contractors will be: The Boeing Company in St. Louis, Missouri and Raytheon systems Corporation in Tucson, Arizona. There are no known offset agreements proposed in connection with this potential sale. Implementation of this proposed sale will not require the assignment of any additional U.S. Government or contractor representatives to Israel. Será que os States estão à espera de algo? Será que os últimos acontecimentos talibãs no Paquistão têm algo em comum com estas armas?
Julgo que sim, israel sempre foi um país precavido e bem informado. Pode não ser para já mas mais ano menos ano o equilibrio vivido no paquistão irá se desvanecer ficando os fanáticos do islão com o poder. E aí a região vai ficar ao "rubro".

Os EUA estão a armar e em força Israel , o Egipto e a Arábia Saudita , o que será que está para vir ? um ataque ao Irão ? não me parece ... uma desestabilização do Paquistão em q várias potencias da região tenham de intervir e em força para q os elementos nucleares do paquistão não caiam em mãos de fundamentalistas que abundam por lá ?

Reforçam o poder militar noâmbito numa aliança com os EUA por forma a impedir o nascimento da potência nuclear chamada Irão.
Mas o que mais me preocupa é a possível subida ao poder de extremistas islâmicos sobretudo em países árabes não-democráticos: Líbia, Síria, Paquistão, Arábia Saudita

JERUSALEM (AFP) — It might harm their reputation, but Israel's air force is considering giving its combat pilots Viagra to improve their performance -- in the air.
A recent study conducted by Israeli doctors among mountain climbers in Africa found a link between erectile dysfunction drugs and improved performance in high altitudes, the mass-selling Yediot Aharonot reported on Thursday.
The active ingredient in the drugs was found to make climbers perform better in an environment with less oxygen, which causes fatigue and dizziness.
This has led army doctors to consider giving jet fighter pilots -- who can fly at altitudes of up to 50,000 feet (15,000 metres) -- the same drug, the report said.
"The Viagra family of drugs is considered effective in these conditions because when there is a long shortage in oxygen it leads to high blood pressure in the lungs, and the drugs help fight that," the report quoted military medical sources as saying.

Bogotá, 12 Fev (Lusa) - Israel vai fornecer à Colômbia 13 aviões de combate Kfir modificados e modernizará outros 11 que já vendeu no passado, indicou segunda-feira o ministério da Defesa colombiano.
Os aviões de combate de fabrico israelita serão entregues entre 2009 e 2010.
Os aparelhos devem estar em funcionamento durante cerca de 20 anos na Força Aérea colombiana, segundo o ministro Juan Manuel Santos, citado pelo site de Internet do ministério.
O montante do contrato, concluído na semana passada durante uma visita do ministro colombiano a Jerusalém, não foi revelado.
