Turkey Floats Out Its First AIP Submarine “Piri Reis”

Turkey's first Reis-class (Type 214TN) Air Independent Propulsion (AIP) capable submarine "Piri Reis" was floated out on 23 March at Golcuk Shipyard.

Tayfun Ozberk  25 Mar 2021

The event marks a milestone for the Reis-class submarine project because the construction of the submarine has been conducted on the dock so far. The submarine met with the water for the first time.

This event was declared by the Head of Turkish Defence Industries, Prof. Ismail Demir, within the scope of 2021 targets of the defense industry during the “Evaluation of 2020 and 2021 Projection Meeting”.

The construction of Piri Reis, named after the Ottomans’ legendary imperial admiral and geographer, has begun in 2015. She was launched in 2019 with a ceremony held in Golcuk Shipyard, scheduled to enter service for the Turkish Navy in 2022. The second submarine of the class, Hizir Reis, is expected to be docked this year. The last boat will be delivered to the Turkish Navy in 2027.

The Reis-class submarine project is crucial for the Turkish Navy. These submarines will enhance the submarine fleet’s strength in surrounding seas by featuring AIP capability. It’s also expected to keep the Aegean Sea’s delicate balances against Greece that has 5 AIP-capable submarines (four Type 214 HN and one modified Type 209). The Turkish Navy has a 12-piece submarine fleet consisting of four Ay-class (Type 209/1200), four Preveze-class (Type 209T/1400), and four Gür-class (Type 209T2/1400), all conventionally-powered (diesel-electric) attack submarines. By 2027, Turkey will be operating six Reis-class AIP submarines. The Reis-class will benefit not only the Turkish Navy but also Turkey’s defense technological and industrial base. The know-how and experience gained from the Reis-class submarine project will be a strong reference for indigenous submarines intended to be built under the National Submarine (MİLDEN) project, which is currently at the design phase and expected to be built in the 2030s. There are many Turkish sub-contractors, including ASELSAN, HAVELSAN, MilSOFT, Defense Technologies Engineering and Trade Inc. (STM), Koç Information and Defense, Scientific and Technological Research Council of Turkey (TÜBİTAK), and AYESAŞ working on Reis-class submarines’ sub-systems such as navigation and data management system, data link, torpedo countermeasure system, etc.

About Reis-class submarines

The Reis-class submarines feature a single-hull, one-compartment design and an air-independent propulsion system on the proven Howaldswerke-Deutsche Werft (HDW) fuel cell. The submarines have a length of 68.35 meters, an outer diameter of 6.3 meters, a displacement of 1,850 tons, and a capacity of 40 personnel.

ThyssenKrupp Marine Systems have been building the Reis-class submarines (known initially as Type 214 TN) in Turkey’s Golcuk Shipyard. The AIP system uses fuel cell technology, PEM Fuel Cell (2x120kw), and high capacity batteries (2×324 units). This provides the submarine with the ability to conduct long-endurance deployments without snorkeling.

The boats will deploy heavyweight torpedoes (MK48 Mod 6AT and DM2A4), anti-ship missiles (Sub-Harpoon), and mines. Indigenous heavyweight torpedo Akya and anti-ship missile Atmaca are expected to be fitted to the next submarines of the project. Reis-class submarine will be able to undertake missions such as littoral water operations to ocean-going patrols, including anti-surface and anti-submarine operations, ISR tasks, and special forces operations. This is mainly thanks to their increased diving depths and their modular weapon and sensor mix.

Turkey Plans To Deploy Indigenous Aircraft ‘Hürjet’ On LHD Anadolu

After Turkey was taken out of the F-35 aircraft program because of CAATSA sanctions imposed by the United States, it has been trying to develop new solutions to deploy fixed-winged air assets on Landing Helicopter Dock (LHD) Anadolu.

Tayfun Ozberk 20 Apr 2021

Despite the lack of F-35B, the Turkish Navy may fly manned jets from its Landing Helicopter Dock (LHD) and flagship, the future TCG Anadolu...

A few weeks ago, Turkey’s Head of Defence Industry Presidency, Prof. Ismail Demir, declared that LHD Anadolu is planned to be transformed into a drone carrier which would carry a new attack drone Bayraktar TB-3, derived from the combat-proven TB-2. While the people have been discussing the pros and cons of a “drone-carrier” concept, Mr. Demir announced a new plan of deploying an indigenous aircraft named “Hürjet” on LHD Anadolu last week.

“We have been working on making changes in the design of Hürjet to operate on naval assets. We carried out several designs and made simulations. It has been seen that the design of its current form can evolve in this direction. The studies are also ongoing; the aim is to evolve Hürjet into a shipborne aircraft to operate it from TCG Anadolu.”

Prof. Demir statement duing an interview with the state-owned Anadolu Agency.
After this surprising announcement, the Turkish Aerospace Industries (TAI) Aircraft Programs Manager stated that TAI has been in talks with the Turkish Navy about operating Hürjet on LHD Anadolu, and they plan to make a protocol with the Turkish Navy to keep cooperation on this issues. He also emphasized that the Hürjet can land and take off from a carrier and meet the operational needs of the Turkish Navy. “Several systems would be integrated into the aircraft to make it adaptable with naval assets.” the aircraft program manager added.

LHD Anadolu
LHD Anadolu
Although the Hürjet is planned to be deployed on the LHD, there are some technical difficulties in realizing this project. According to the experts, the Hürjet’s body parts should be strengthened before operating on a ship. Comparing to an aircraft carrier, Anadolu’s flight deck is shorter because it was designed for STOVL (short take-off and vertical landing) aircraft. For this reason, Hürjet may need a catapult system that will provide initial speed to take off. Because of the length of the flight deck, a hook system should be fitted to Anadolu to catch the aircraft while landing. Even if the hook system is fitted to the ship, it is unclear how the aircraft would stop if the hook cannot catch because the length of the flight deck wouldn’t provide enough room for Hürjet to take off again.

Hürjet was initially designed as a jet trainer aircraft, but it could assume combatant roles after fitting with missiles and other munitions. Although it cannot cope with a modern fighter aircraft, it can be used effectively in air-to-surface missions. It has a payload of around 3 tons which provides it to carry and launch indigenous SOM-J air-to-surface missiles and guided-munitions to neutralize adversary surface assets with limited air defense capability. It can also provide ISR assistance to the task group.

Prof. Demir declared at the same interview that they are planning to commission Anadolu in 2022. If the necessary modifications would be fitted, it is possible that the commissioning of LHD Anadolu would be delayed.

About Hürjet Advanced Jet Trainer & Light Attack Aircraft
Hürjet Advanced Jet Trainer & Light Attack Aircraft
The TAI Hürjet is a single-engine, tandem seat, advanced supersonic trainer, and light combat aircraft under development by Turkish Aerospace Industries (TAI). It is expected to fulfill a critical role in modern pilot training through its superior performance characteristics.

The combat variant of the aircraft provides a battlefield force multiplier through a wide range of mission capabilities and an extensive payload. Hürjet Project has started to fulfill Turkish Air Force requirements by replacing aging T-38s with Advanced Jet Trainers (AJT) and F-5 Acrobatic Team Aircrafts with modern high-performance multirole aircraft. The aircraft can assume Advanced Jet Trainer, Lead-in Fighter Trainer, Light Attack (Close Air Support), Red Aircraft, Air Policing (Armed & Unarmed), and Acro Team Aircraft roles.

Vai precisar de cabos de travagem, e que o novo jacto, que pelas imagens mais parece um FA-50 sul-coreano, consiga descolar com recurso à rampa, o que certamente não será impossível, mas obrigará a um payload muito limitado.
