Irish Navy commissions final P60-class OPV LÉ George Bernard Shaw

Photo: Irish Navy

The Irish Navy commissioned its fourth and final P60 class offshore patrol vessel (OPV) LÉ George Bernard Shaw in a ceremony in Waterport on April 30.

The vessel was commissioned after being floated out at Babcock’s shipyard in Appledore, North Devon, in April 2018.
Babcock built the four OPVs under a 2010 contract signed with the Irish defense ministry.

The 90-meter, 2256-ton OPVs have a top speed of 23 knots and have a range of 6,000 nautical miles at a cruise speed of 15 knots on a single engine. They are based on the VARD 7 090 design.

The OPVs have a 76mm gun as the main weapon and are able to act as a mother ship for three rigid hulled inflatable boats.
LÉ Samuel Beckett, LÉ William Butler Yeats and LÉ James Joyce joined the Irish Navy in 2014, 2015 and 2016, respectively.

The OPVs perform a range of duties including fishery protection, drug interdiction, search and rescue, anti-pollution and maritime security duties.

Naval service detained boat south of Fastnet Rock for alleged fishing regulation breach

A Portuguese-registered fishing vessel was detained in Irish waters by the Navy Service on Thursday.

The Lé Samuel Beckett, a Naval Service patrol vessel, detained the Portuguese boat approximately 200 nautical miles south of Fastnet Rock, after an alleged breach of fishing regulations.

In a statement, the service said the Portuguese vessel was being escorted to Castletownbere, County Cork, where it will be handed over to An Garda Síochána. The detention is now a garda matter and the nature of the infringement has not been disclosed.

It is the second detainment by the service this week and the eighth of 2019. On Tuesday, Lé George Bernard Shaw detained an Irish fishing vessel off Howth.

Sea fishery inspections and detentions form part of the Naval Service’s delivery of government services and its work with the Sea Fishery Protection Authority.

The patrol boats also participate in international missions. Last year, Lé Samuel Beckett was deployed in Mediterranean waters. It was one of several Irish patrol ships to support Operation Sofia, the European mission to help migrants crossing from Africa to the EU.

A tender has finally been implemented by the Department of Defence for consultants to help it procure a €200m multi-role vessel (MRV) for the Naval Service.

As far back as 2015, the White Paper on Defence identified the need to replace the ageing Naval Service flagship LÉ Eithne with a new vessel, such as an MRV, which would be capable of carrying troops, freight and a helicopter.

The Department of Defence has gone to tender to seek consultants to provide the best design and value for money for the new ship, which it says will be “tailor-made to meet the requirements of the Defence Forces.”

The department said the design specification of the ship must make it “capable of providing a flexible and adaptive capacity for a wide range of maritime tasks, both at home and overseas.”

Estes Irlandeses lá conseguem encontrar Navios em segunda mão, e com poucos anos de serviço, apenas onze, para reforçar a sua frota.

Department of Defence looking to buy New Zealand naval ships

Lake-class inshore patrol vessels similar to the ones that could be purchased by the Irish defence forces.

The Department of Defence has confirmed that it is currently exploring the possibility of purchasing two New Zealand navy ships to be used for fisheries protection duties in the Irish Sea.

The Irish Examiner understands that the ships are 'Lake Class' 55 m (180ft) inshore patrol vessels.
The Royal New Zealand Navy was supplied with four of them by British shipbuilders Brooke Marine. Two have since been decommissioned.

In a statement, the Department of Defence said: "A potential acquisition by Ireland of two Royal New Zealand Navy Inshore Patrol Vessels is currently being explored. No contractual agreement has been signed (as of yet), and in accordance with normal practice the Department does not comment on commercial discussions."
The ships being looked at are much smaller than the more modern vessels used by the Irish Naval Service.
The navy needs larger vessels to patrol the Atlantic, particularly due to the rough weather that can be experienced there.
However, the weather is not as bad in the Irish Sea and, therefore, smaller vessels like the 'Lake Class' inshore patrol boats would be ideal there.
Also, and just as importantly, the New Zealand ships need smaller crews than the larger Naval Service vessels.
Typically a Naval Service ship needs a crew of around 45 personnel. The Lake Class ships can be crewed with just 25 people.

Personnel shortage

The Naval Service is critically short of personnel and would be unlikely to be able to adequately crew new ships of a larger size.
At present, the Naval Service is short around 200 personnel of the 1,094 minimum it's supposed to have.
If the purchase goes through, it is likely the ships will be permanently based on the east coast, around Dublin and Dún Laoghaire.
Minister for Defence Simon Coveney wants to put the vessels on fisheries patrols in the Irish Sea in light of Brexit.
Meanwhile, it's understood that the Naval Service Reserve (NSR) will soon be getting four new boats, primarily for port security duties.
It's expected that Mr Coveney will shortly sign off on a contract for the badly-needed boats.
The NSR was equipped with motor launches, but over the years they deteriorated because of age and became useless. The last was decommissioned three years ago.
The new boats will allow the NSR to provide armed security in the strategic ports of Cork, Dublin, Foynes, and Waterford.
The vessels - which will be around 30 tonnes and up to 15m in length - will be considerably more modern than what the NSR previously had.
They will also be built to specifications which will allow them to be used as a platform for navy divers.
It is estimated that the four will cost more than €2.5m.

Com menos paleio que os Tugas acerca do NPL, os Irlandeses vão adquirir o deles bem antes de nós, e, não estão assim tão preocupados com os escoltas para o NPL. ::)
Para mim, e referente a este tópico a noticia mais importante é esta :

.......He confirmed work on a mid-life upgrade for the LE Roisin has been completed.
However the replacement of the Navy’s biggest ship the LE Eithne with a multi-role vessel is an important element of the military’s equipment development plan.
Marine advisors have been hired to help with the procurement of the new ship........

https://www.thesun.ie/news/8298009/irish-defence-forces-spending-next-three-years

NB o LE Roisin tem 21 anos de serviço e já tem o MLU efectuado. :bang:
