Têm duas classes, a classe Sauro e a Todaro.

German and Italian Class 212 A Submarines successfully fired DM 2 A4 Torpedoes
(2007-10-11)
By: ATLAS ELEKTRONIK GmbH
Final system integration firings with the DM 2 A4 - SEAHAKE mod 4, ATLAS Elektronik's new heavy weight torpedo, were conducted when the Italian 212 A class SCIRE and her German sister boat U-33 proved their perfect interoperability in September off Taranto in Southern Italy.
At present, the two Italian 212 A's are armed with the A-184 heavy weight torpedo and will supposedly receive the still to be introduced "BLACK SHARK" from WASS. Since both the German and Italian sister boats are equipped with Kongsberg's Basic Command and Weapons Control System MSI 90 U and ATLAS's sonar suites, problems with SCIRE's first time launching of the optically-guided German high performance torpedo were not expected - and did not occur. For the Italian Navy, this was a convincing proof that the German partners and their technology can be relied upon to complete the task.
Up till 25 September, U-33 carried on with a series of open range firings on high speed targets like MAESTRALE class frigates and auxiliaries provided by the host navy. This demonstrated the enormous capabilities of the fuel-cell powered 212 A class in combination with its new torpedo, especially when firing a salvo of four torpedoes simultaneously on four different targets ending in successful hit of each target. The superb weather and the relatively low traffic intensity in Tarento Bay allowed the commanding officer to fully exploit the - relative to the predecessor weapon - dramatically increased speed and range of the DM 2 A4.
The firings were supported by a mobile team of torpedo experts from the civilian "Bundeswehr Technical Centre for Ships and Naval Weapons" (WTD 71), and their auxiliary ship KRONSORT, based in Eckernfoerde, Germany. Almost 2,000 miles away from home, they demonstrated dedication and professionalism to both Italian and German submariners and did their utmost to bring about success

Como está a situação do projecto FREMM? Vão serem feitos cortes? Vão mesmo serem construidas as 10 fragatas? As 4 Artigliere (ex-iraquianas) também vão serem substituidas pelas 10 FREMM? Se assim for então as 10 FREMM substituem 8 Maestrale, 4 Lupo e 4 Artigliere, 16 navios.

Italy Confirms Cutback in Eurofighter Order
By TOM KINGTON
Published: 20 Jul 2010 17:44
FARNBOROUGH, England - During a lightning visit to the Farnborough Air Show on July 20, Italy's defense minister confirmed that Italy would cut its planned purchase of Eurofighters by 25 aircraft.
Ignazio La Russa said that by purchasing 96 aircraft instead of the originally planned 121, Italy would save 2 billion euros ($2.6 billion), part of a national debt reduction plan that Italy is pushing through to shore up its finances and reassure financial markets.
The 25 aircraft form the final Tranche 3B of the planned aircraft order for which the Eurofighter partners have yet to sign.
La Russa also confirmed that instead of buying 10 FREMM frigates as planned, Italy will initially buy six and seek to export the others. Brazil is currently seen as a possible customer.
Italian chief of staff Gen. Vincenzo Camporini, who joined La Russa at the air show, said a more pressing problem for the Italian armed forces was ongoing cuts to maintenance and operations funding, which observers say have hurt training and readiness.
"This is the toughest problem I have and I intend to rationalize the system so that all the duplications are eliminated," Camporini said. "Each service is currently responsible for its own maintenance and I would like to have services which use the same helicopter, for instance, to combine efforts."

In 2008, Jeanne d'Arc was deployed in an anti-piracy role in the Gulf of Aden.[3] The ship was used as part of the rescue effort of Le Ponant during the April 2008 hostage-taking incident. Italian state shipyard Fincantieri and Italian defense group Finmeccanica have signed a €1.1 billion contract to build a new amphibious ship, or LHD, for the Italian Navy. (...)
The unit will be approximately 200 meters long, with a maximum speed of 25 knots. It will be equiped with a combined diesel and gas turbine plant and be able to accommodate on board more than 1.000 people, of whom more than 700 would be military or civilian transported people.
The LHD military profile provides transport and landing, in equipped and unequipped areas, of troops, military vehicles and logistics equipment.
The civil profile use provides:
- Healthcare and hospital support.
- Transfer and landing of people and wheeled or tracked means of transport in equipped and unequipped areas. Supply of drinking water to land through on board desalination plants or storage.
- Supply of electricity to land with 2000 kilowatts of power and its distribution through containerized conversion and distribution units.
- Possibility of accommodating specialized staff on board or hosting up to 700 civilian personnel, plus the same number in containerized residential units.
- Rescue operations base through helicopters and vessels (...)
The Italian Navy has ordered a new landing helicopter dock (LHD), with Fincantieri and Finmeccanica announcing they had been awarded a EUR1.1 billion (USD1.3 billion) contract for the vessel on 1 July.(https://www.forumdefesa.com/forum/proxy.php?request=http%3A%2F%2Fwww.janes.com%2Fimages%2Fassets%2F751%2F52751%2F1639452_-_main.jpg&hash=278649e64eda814529fa20ed4e618a16)
The delivery of the new ship is planned for the beginning of 2022. Design activities have already begun, with initial construction (steel cutting) due at the end of 2016. The launch is scheduled for the beginning of 2019.
The contract awarded by the Italian Ministry of Defence (MoD)'s General Directorate for Naval Armaments (NAVARM) to the Raggruppamento Temporaneo di Impresa (RTI) industrial consortium of Finmeccanica and Fincantieri covers the design, construction, fitting out, and delivery of the LHD.
The contract also includes logistic services and in-service maintenance support t from RTI for the first ten years of the vessel's lifecycle. Finmeccanica, through Selex ES, will act as prime contractor for the ship's entire combat system, delivering and integrating all the systems; including those provided by Oto Melara, WASS and Elettronica.
The division of the contract is worth about EUR853 million to Fincantieri and EUR273 million to Finmeccanica.
According to industrial sources the new LHD is to be built at the Italian group's Castellammare di Stabia shipyard near Naples, while testing and acceptance trails are expected to be conducted from Muggiano shipyard near La Spezia.
The Naples shipyard has previously delivered mostly civil vessels, principally cruise liners and ferries but is being used as Fincantieri's other naval shipyards are already being used for construction. The shipyard has however delivered naval vessels in the past, and in 2012/2013 launched the Italian Coast Guard's two Luigi Dattilo-class offshore patrol vessels (OPVs).
According to the Italian Navy General Staff the vessel will have dual-use capabilities, for a wide range of military and humanitarian missions. The new LHD will be of 22,000 tonnes displacement, be about 210 m long, with a beam of 30 m. It will have a crew of around 450 personnel and will have accommodation for up to 1,000 people in total - allowing the transportation of 550 additional troops or civilians.
The LHD will be equipped with a 50 m x 15 m well dock able to accommodate up to four landing craft mechanised (LCM) with a load capacity of 60 tons, as well as amphibious vehicles and landing craft air cushioned (LCAC).
The flight deck will have at least five spots for helicopters, a hangar for recovery and a 4,500m² combined helicopter maintenance and dock-garage.
The combat system elements will be based on the more comprehensive package the industrial consortium is developing for Italian Navy's new combatant patrol vessel (PPA - Pattugliatore Polivalente d'Altura). The sensor suite will include an X-band, four-fixed-face, multi-functional scanned-array radar system and will be fitted for the C-band segment. The new LHD is also to receive a rotating L-band active electronically scanned array (AESA) surveillance radar. The vessel will be powered by a combined diesel and gas turbine (CODOG) plant providing a maximum speed of around 25 kts and a range of 7,000 n miles at 16 kts.
The Italian Navy has ordered a new LHD from RTI. Pictured is one of the two concept designs from RTI, which features a single extended island. The alternative design features two separate and smaller islands. It is currently unclear which design has been chosen. Source: Luca Peruzzi

Italy's fourth Todaro-class Type 212A submarine is presented officially, in preparation for launch
Romeo Romei is the last of a pair of batch two boats ordered by the defence ministry in April 2008
The Italian Navy officially presented for launch its fourth Todaro-class Type 212A air independent propulsion (AIP) conventional submarine, at a ceremony at Fincantieri's Muggiano shipyard on 4 July. While the ceremony marked the submarine's official launch, IHS Jane's understands that the boat will enter the water for the first time in mid-July.
Named Romeo Romei (S 529), the boat is the last of a pair of batch two 212As ordered by the Italian defence ministry in April 2008, under a joint programme with Germany for the acquisition and support of a new submarine. Under this arrangement, Italy has already received the batch one boats Salvatore Todaro (S 526) and Sciré (S 527); the lead batch two boat Pietro Venuti (S 528) was launched on 9 October and is scheduled to enter service in December 2015.
" Romei is planned to complete fitting-out and to conduct harbour acceptance trials [between] the end of 2015 and the beginning of 2016, when sea acceptance trials will begin, in order to be delivered in September 2016," said Lieutenant Fabio Casamassima, Romeo Romei 's commanding officer, at the ceremony. "We will conduct a similar acceptance tests plan to Pietro Venuti ," he added. This plan includes 10 test launches of the new WASS Black Shark Advanced (BSA) heavyweight torpedo.
Pietro Venuti began sea acceptance trials at the end of April 2015, and has successfully completed the first two of a planned eight BSA firings, noted the submarine's commanding officer Commander Giuseppe Galeandro. "The boat is expected to conduct fuel cell-based Air Independent Propulsion long-endurance tests as well as degaussing," he added: these tests will take place later in 2015 on the navy's Augusta range.
The navy's batch two boats differ from the first batch through having received a series of platform and system enhancements (although emphasis has been placed on retaining the maximum level of logistics and maintenance commonality with the first batch). The most significant enhancements include the Atlas Elektronik DBQS 40 electro-acoustic suite, which has been updated to the fully digitised CSU 90-138 version; the OMS 100 optronic surveillance mast; and the Kongsberg MSI-90U Mk 2 submarine combat management system (CMS), which offers the ability to control the boats' periscopes from the CMS consoles.
The navigation system has also been improved, with the installation of ECDIS digital cartography. The communications suite has been augmented with the addition of an SHF-band SATCOM-dedicated mast and Link 16 Joint Range Extension Applications Protocol-C (JREAP-C) capabilities. The Indra MRBR 800 has been installed as the electronic support measures (ESM) system.

Italian Navy's AW101 helicopter crashed during a training flight on Nov. 6 at 6.00 pm. The helicopter was operating with the destroyer Caio Duilio. During the accident, all six helicopter crew members survived and no one injured.
The reason of the crash is under investigation.
2° PPA lançado
https://www.navalnews.com/naval-news/2020/05/fincantieri-launched-the-2nd-ppa-francesco-morosini-for-the-italian-navy/
The PPA is a highly flexible ship with the capacity to serve multiple functions, ranging from patrol with sea rescue capacity to Civil Protection operations and, in its most highly equipped version, first line fighting vessel. There will be indeed different configurations of combat system: starting from a “light” version for the patrol task, integrated for self-defence ability, to a “full” one, equipped for a complete defence ability. The vessel is also capable of operating high-speed vessels such as RHIB (Rigid Hull Inflatable Boat) up to 11 meters long through lateral cranes or a hauling ramp located at the far stern.
The PPA “full” version will see its total displacement increased to 6,270 tons (compared to 5,880 tons for the “light+” version and 5830 tons for the “light” version) and its length increased to 143 meters. PPA “full” will thus be comparable to Italian FREMM type frigates (total displacement of 6900 tons and a length of 144 meters). The crew complement of the PPA “full” configuration should be 173 people.

6 more Fremm for the Italian Navy. The new programs for the NAVY include:
- 6 FREMM NG (32 VLS) ->16 FREMM (8 old type, 8 new type with 32 VLS) + 7 PPA (Full) = 23 FFGH
- 4 DDGX (92 VLS) + 2 Horizon (48 VLS) = 6 DDGH in total
- 1 CVL -> 2 CLV (Cavour + this) + 1 LHD Trieste
2 more SSK (10 in total)
The programs need the 2% of GDP spending, for which the Italian government is dealing with the EU the spin out of the defence budget from the Fiscal Compact agreements (with political support of the USA)

PPA #2 "Francesco Morosini" and interviewed the CO 🇮🇹. The ship is very impressive with its next generation and avant-garde features.
Diesel-powered with a top speed of around 20 knots and 7,000 nautical mile autonomy, the new vessels will be around 160 meters long and 29 meters wide with room for 200 crew and a 300-strong landing force.
“They will be called ‘LXD’s with the X standing for ‘whatever’ because we don’t want to limit the role they fill,” said Tomassetti.
The design, similar to the Dutch Rotterdam class, means less room on the flight deck for transporting material and vehicles, but more room below deck in the garage and dock for vehicles – up to around 70 tonnes in total – with space for around 480 meters of vehicles lined up,
The first Light+ PPA has been delivered to the @ItalianNavy. Note the R-ECM, the 16-cell Sylver A50 VLS and the KRONOS Quad C-band MFR.

Italian Navy future FREMM EVO
Phoenix_jz - An evolution of the FREMM-GPe (hybrid GP/ASW) currently under construction for the MMI, most of the features below the waterline are the same.
The evolution in design becomes obvious about the waterline - the superstructures have been heavily altered (built up) to accommodate the Kronos Dual Band Radar. This radar is also notably split between the fore and aft superstructures, as on the DDX.
Gone is the aft mast - most of its functions have been shifted to the foremast - which, now, without the main radar to host, resembles that of the DDX (including the same Integrated EW System). Another change is the move to the SADOC 4 CMS (same as the PPA and DDX).
With the new radar suite (and updated Weapon Control System), the FREMM-EVO will also be able to use the Aster 30 B1NT munition to engage in terminal ballistic missile defense, a significant boost in capability for the platform.
On the other hand, the ship's missile armament will remain the same - we're still looking at 16x Sylver A50 VLS, and FFBNW 16x Sylver A70.
É para o atual Storm Shadow naval e o futuro FC/ASW
