Desejar o desemprego, a endividação, e uma vida má a alguém, só porque não concorda com a nossa visão política é um bocado triste.. Digo eu..

Pois é triste, mas não é uma questão de desejar ou não, apenas uma previsão.

My message to Republicans now that Barack Obama has won

Don’t despair.

America didn’t reject conservatism, America rejected George Bush.  Keep in mind that voters almost always reject that whom it selected only eight years before.  (Ronald Reagan, in this as in so many things, is the exceptional exception.)  Many of you rejected Bush yourself two years ago.  If you’ll recall, Democratic turnout in the 2006 election only exceeded Republicans by 3%, but Democrats won by much larger margins.  The difference in the outcome was the number of Republicans voting for a Democrat because they didn’t like what had become of Washington Republicans.  The same thing happened this year.  When Republicans stand again for limited government interference (economic AND social), they will again prevail.

Arguably, Bill Clinton governed more conservatively on domestic matters than did Bush.  The TSA, prescription drug coverage, no child left behind–these Bush programs were unprecedented expansions of the federal government into areas where Republicans didn’t support Washington’s intrusion.  Were they proposed two terms before, they would have been shot down by Republicans in Congress.  And America today would be better for it.

That’s the role that Republicans must again reclaim.  There will be ample opportunity to do so.  Obama, Pelosi, and Reid are a far more dangerous combination than was Carter, O’Neill, and Byrd.  This is still a center-right country.  They will overplay their hand.  Oppose them often.

However, never let that opposition turn into “Obama derangement syndrome.”  There will be no impeachment.  Never even utter the “I” word.  There is no hidden birth certificate proving Obama ineligible for the office.  Bill Ayers and Jeremiah Wright will not be secret presidential advisors.  ACORN was not the difference in this election.  The few thousand fraudulent votes they manufactured were more than outnumbered by the number of outraged voters they generated who opposed them.  Focus on ACORN like Democrats were obsessed with ”cheating” in Florida, and I’ll guarantee you the same result:  a bigger loss in four years.  Yes, ACORN is corrupt, but they are also incompetent.  They could no more organize an electoral coup than they could a bake sale.  Drop the conspiracy theories.  It makes you sound insane.

Give President Obama your support.  (And by the way, it’s “President Obama.”  Get used to saying it.  Don’t ever start with the “Chimpy McBusHitler” derogatory nickname crap that Dems have played since 2000.)  He’s going to need it.  He has no experience, no record, and no foreign policy bona fides.  Joe Biden was right.  He is going to be tested.  America is going to be tested.  We are going to pass that test.  We have to; American lives are on the line.  We will NEVER do what Democrats have tried to do in Iraq; we will never try to make America lose a war so that an opposing party’s president can’t claim a victory.  If Republicans ever become like that you will lose people like me.  And there are a lot of me.

Oppose Obama on issues instead.  When Republicans did that in 1994 they won.  When they concentrated on investigations a la 1998, they lost.  No party ever gains seats in the off year election of its president’s second term.  Ever.  Until 1998.  And it’s because you had Clinton  derangement syndrome.  Beat Obama at the ballot box not through a special prosecutor.

Beat him with ideas, not personalities.  Maybe his 2012 opponent will be Sarah Palin, maybe Bobby Jindal, maybe David Petraeus, and maybe somebody that nobody has ever heard of.  Don’t worry about that until after 2010.  Return to a focus on ideas.  Let the Democrats be the cult of personality.  Obama’s newness will wear off as his actions become more unpopular.  He is, after all, popular for being popular, not for who he is and what he believes.  That’s why the Parris Hilton ad was so effective.  Keep in mind also that only one unsuccessful vice presidential candidate has ever gone on to win the presidency himself.  That was FDR and he didn’t run again until 12 years after Harding-Coolidge beat him and James Cox.  When the time is right Sarah Palin will be a formidable force, but don’t force her before her time.

The media has demonstrated that it is the enemy of Republicans.  For many reasons they actively took sides this year.  Don’t complain about it, fight it.  Stop subscribing, watching, and visiting.  Patronize new media. (Especially conservative blogs like this one!)  Stop buying the products they advertise.  They are already on financial edge.  If Obama is going to bankrupt the coal industry, then bankrupt his media so that they won’t be there to report it.

One other thing.  They’re going to gloat.  A lot.  Much more than we would have.  They think that you’re not just wrong and stupid and racist,  but that you are a crook and that you have stolen elections for eight years.  Don’t respond to their insanity, let it shine through.  America rejected Bush, but in 2010 they will again reject Democrats because they won’t like this new version of the Democratic Party.  The only way that doesn’t happen is if America doesn’t like what you’ve become too.

Finally, get a life outside of politics.  America is made great by what happens outside the beltway.

My message to Republicans now that John McCain has won (if only)

Gloat!

For months–years, really–the Democratic Party and its media allies have told us that America has rejected the Republican Party and all that it stands for.  They were wrong.  They threw everything at us that they had but they couldn’t kill conservatism.  Not that John McCain and the Republicans of 2008 were the pinnacles of conservatism–not by a long stretch–but Barack Obama and the modern Democratic Party is a complete rejection of everything conservative.  America had no intention of going there.  So gloat.  But only for an evening. (Okay, I might just wear a Palin button to Whole Foods the next time I’m there.  But only once.  Well, if I get a lot of dirty looks, maybe more than once.)

Tomorrow, extend a welcome to your Democratic neighbors.  They’re not your enemies.  They only thought that there was a better way to get to a better place.  Most of them voted for Barack Obama not for who he is–noone really knows who he is–but for who he is not.  He is not George W. Bush.  It was his only message.  Face it, you’ve not been happy with Bush either.  He presided over the largest increase in the size of the federal government since Johnson.  He put Washington’s nose even more deeply into state and local issues like education.  His Transportation Security Administration is a joke.  And while we admired his steady hand in the aftermath of 9-11, he took his hand off the tiller and let Iraq get out of hand until it was almost too late.  If he was running again, you would vote against him too.  Admit it.  So don’t blame the half of the country that symbolically did what you would have done yourself.

Take your bumper stickers off your cars.  There are a lot of raw nerves exposed by this election.  A black man came very close to being elected President.  A lot of black hopes were raised, for good reason.  Andrew Jackson, nearly two centuries ago, proved to his kind of folks that you didn’t need to be an Eastern elite to be President.  Every first is monumental to those used to being second.  Or last.

The battle is not over.  In many ways the Republican task is harder with a Republican President.  The TSA, no-child left behind, the extension of prescription drug benefits when we can’t afford to pay the health care benefits we already promise–those are not principled conservative positions.  Were they Bill Clinton’s proposals congressional Republicans would have stopped them dead.  But for a Republican President, they rolled over.  John McCain has already shown a great willingness to meet Democrats halfway on their bad ideas.  Republicans have to keep him in check.

But don’t play the battle so viciously that you push McCain to the other side.  You’ve done that before.  Immigration, for example.  He simply had the temerity to point out that we’re not putting 11 million people on a trail of tears back to Mexico, so we have to figure out what to do with them here.  That’s realistic not radical.  But if you push too hard on McCain he will push back to spite you.  Remember, we need  him on judicial appointments.  And foreign policy.  And when you look at the Constitution, as I would urge you to do from time to time, that’s pretty much all a President should do.

It’s going to be hard to come together with the hard left.  Impossible probably.  A McCain victory is going to create a derangement syndrome in Democrats that makes BDS look like a minor head cold.  If the leftoshpere seemed like an inhospitable place these last few years, you can’t even imagine what’s coming next.  But don’t worry, their unhinging will be their undoing–IF you don’t answer it with an unhinged derangement of your own.  Let them vent without response.  (Ignoring the irrational is usually the best response anyway.)

Remember one other thing.  The most important things in America have always come from outside Washington.  So get away from politics for a while.
