The new system is expected to be mounted on a 4x4 vehicle, and is needed as the tracked M48 Chaparral is increasingly outdated and costly to operate and maintain. The Chaparral fires a variant of the AIM-9 Sidewinder short-range air-to-air missile.
Although Portugal's Military Programming Law 2015-26, approved in May 2015, only provides funding to support the acquisition from 2022, studies are being carried out on hypotetically starting it earlier, the service told
