Like in Cold War, it looks like the Syria is about to become a battleground between two global powers, the United States and Russia. On one side, United States will have NATO forces on its side while the Syrian, Iran and China would backup Russians.

The US Government had officially announced that they will deploy Special Forces units into Syria to coordinate and lead the efforts of “moderate rebels.” That means that the US will provide support to the forces fighting against Assad’s government. The deployment of 50 Special Operations advisors, as they were labeled by media, means the U.S. Army Special Forces (Airborne) – Green Berets will be deployed, because they are the only unit capable of deploying for long periods of time and conducting the various tasks including the training of foreigners as a force multiplier. The mission of US Army Special Forces includes various tasks, but the direct action (DA) and strike missions are not the primary forte.

Unconventional Warfare training is used to train forces of the friendly countries or the supportive military forces loyal to the U.S. goals, as well as civilians as a fighting force in operations that are insurgent or counter-insurgent depending on the foreign country’s status in relation to official U.S. policy.

The local forces are usually trained to conduct guerrilla warfare and unconventional warfare operations to the level of a regular U.S. Army infantry unit. According to the reports, deployment around 50 Special Operations advisers means that such a figure would equate to about 3 separate teams. Each team is capable of training anywhere from 1500 to 2000 personnel.

That should be a problem for the Vladimir Putin and Russia because the Spetsnaz troops are already deployed to Syria to support the regime of Bashar al-Assad and Russia’s airstrikes. There is a possibility that the Spetsnaz units will be engaged in direct action against enemies of the regime, what means that they will conduct a ground assault on rebels fighting the regime.

It looks like, the two sides have been placed on a collision course in which there is bound to be shooting. The Russia’s Special Forces (Spetsnaz) are very capable, they are very good, and they are masters of assassination and counterintelligence missions.

The upcoming events should reveal what course will take US Government, now when we have a situation where the two global powers are positioning themselves to conduct such operations against one another. And if this prediction comes as true, we will be facing a threat which could lead into the World War III.
