December 31, 2020, by Naida Hakirevic

The corvette is entering the Pacific Fleet and will soon make the transition to a permanent base.

Designed by the Almaz Central Marine Design Bureau, Gremyashchy-class corvettes are an advanced variant of Steregushchy-class (Project 20380) multi-purpose corvettes in service with the Russian Navy since 2007.

Gremyashchy was launched in June 2017 after starting construction in May 2011. In January this year, the newbuilding completed sea trials in the Barents Sea.

Russian Navy’s corvette Aldar Tsydenzhapov enters Pacific Fleet

December 25, 2020, by Naida Hakirevic

The Russian Navy’s ninth Steregushchy-class (Project 20380) corvette has officially joined the country’s Pacific Fleet.

On 25 December 2020, the Russian Navy held a flag raising ceremony for the newbuild at the military pier of the Korabelnaya embankment in Vladivostok.

Named Hero of the Russian Federation Aldar Tsydenzhapov, the ship honors the 19-year-old Russian Pacific Fleet sailor who sacrificed his life to save other shipmates after a fire broke out on destroyer Bystry in September 2010.

Launched in 2019, the corvette is the third in its class to be built by Amur Shipbuilding and the third to join Russia’s Pacific Fleet.

The keel-laying ceremony for the ship was held back in July 2015.

Last summer, the 104.5-meter ship arrived in Vladivostok to undergo sea trials during which its systems, mechanisms and weapons were tested.

The Project 20380 corvettes displace 2,200 tons at full load and reach speeds of up to 27 knots.

On 23 April 2019, the third and fourth BDKs of Project 11711, Vladimir Andreev and Vasily Trushin, were laid at Yantar. They will be transferred to the Russian Navy in 2023 and 2024, respectively. As the president of the United Shipbuilding Corporation Alexei Rakhmanov explained, the dimensions of new ships increased and their displacement will increase to 7-8 thousand tons. Representatives of the enterprise also confirmed that the new BDK will carry on-board attack helicopters Ka-52K Katran. In particular, the add-in differs from the base project.

K-535 Yuriy Dolgorukiy is the first Borei-class ballistic missile submarine of the Project 955 in service with the Russian Navy.

Russian MoD Ordered Two More Borei-A-Class SSBN From Sevmash

The Russian Ministry of Defense (MoD) and Sevmash Shipyard signed a contract in July 2020 for the construction of two Borey-A-class SSBN of project 955A, shipyard CEO Mikhail Budnichenko told the Zavod journal of Sevmash.

Naval News Staff  14 Jan 2021

TASS Russian news agency

“In July, a contract was signed with the Defense Ministry for the construction of another two Borey-A-class nuclear submarines. They are the Dmitry Donskoy and the Knyaz Potemkin,”

Sevmash shipyard CEO Mikhail Budnichenko

Budnichenko recalled that the Knyaz Vladimir lead submarine of upgraded project 955A was handed over to the Navy in June 2020. The Knyaz Oleg SSBN was rolled out of the slipway in July. The shipyard is building four SSBN — the Knyaz Oleg, the Generalissimo Suvorov, the Emperor Alexander III and the Knyaz Pozharsky.

Sevmash laid the Knyaz Vladimir in July 2012 and floated it in November 2017. It joined the Navy in June 2020 making the construction time last 96 months. The Knyaz Oleg was laid in July 2014 and floated in July 2020. It has to join the Navy in 2021.

The Generalissimo Suvorov was laid in December 2014, the Emperor Alexander III in December 2015, and the Knyaz Pozharsky in December 2016.

If the fifth and sixth SSBN are laid in 2021, they may join the Navy in 2027-2028. Thus, Russia will have ten project 955 and 955A SSBN (the Yuri Dolgoruky, the Alexander Nevsky and the Vladimir Monomakh of project 955 and seven SSBN of project 955A).

The Russian Navy currently operates four SSBN of projects 955 and 955A, one SSBN of project 677BDR (the Ryazan), six SSBN of project 677BDRM (the Verkhoturye, the Yekaterinburg, the Tula, the Bryansk, the Karelia and the Novomoskovsk) and one SSBN of project 941 (the Dmitry Donskoy). It makes a total of twelve SSBN. All Soviet-built submarines are to be decommissioned and replaced by new SSBN by the end of the decade.

The naming of a new SSBN after Dmitry Donskoy means that the last SSBN of project 941 with the same name would be decommissioned. The Navy will also get rid of project 667BDR submarines. It is unclear which project 677BDRM subs will be replaced. The decision will depend on the technical state of each submarine.

If Sevmash signs another contract for two SSBN of project 955A in the coming years, it will fully switch the sea component of the Russian nuclear deterrence to fourth-generation SSBN by early 2030s.

General Director of Kuznetsov Refit Shipyard Arrested For Embezzlement
 By ALBERT L

The general director of a shipyard contracted to carry out repair and refit work on the Admiral Kuznetsov has been arrested by Russian law enforcement. He is alleged to have embezzled around 45 million rubles ($605,000) in funding allocated for work on Russia’s sole aircraft carrier.

According to TASS, Murmansk’s Oktyabrsky District Court had ordered the arrest of the general director of Russian Shipyard No. 10, after local law enforcement had searched the offices of the Polyarny shipyard and the homes of several senior shipyard employees. The general director is being detained for two months following the opening of a criminal investigation into the alleged embezzlement.

General director of the No. 10 Shipyard, Yevgeny Zudin. (No. 10 Shipyard via 47News)
47News identified the general director as Yevgeny Zudin. The news site reports that the order to arrest him was given by the court on the evening of 19 March, after raids by police and SOBR on the morning of the 18th. According to 47News’ preliminary information, at least five more identical charges are likely to be pressed following his arrest.

The criminal case, opened on 29 December, 2020, alleges overbilling by the shipyard for the cleaning of the Admiral Kuznetsov’s fuel tanks. The shipyard had been subcontracted by the Zvezdochka ship repair center for several stages of cleaning work in October 2018, with the work completed in July 2019. However, the shipyard is said to have billed the Russian military for 23 thousand man-hours worth of work, instead of the 13 thousand man-hours of work that actually took place.
