14 MAY 2021Leonardo pitches M-346FA as Polish ‘Fitter' replacement

Leonardo is pitching its M-346FA as a potential replacement for Poland’s ageing fleet of Sukhoi Su-22 ‘Fitter’ aircraft, the company announced on 14 May.

The M-346FA could be a capable yet cost effective replacement for Poland’s ageing fleet of Warsaw Pact-era Su-22s. (Janes/Patrick Allen)

Declaring its intention to bid its M-346FA light attack aircraft as a replacement for the Polish air force (Inspektorat Sił Powietrznych: ISP) fleet of nearly 30 Warsaw Pact-era Su-22M4 aircraft that have been in service since 1985, Leonardo noted the synergies that the ISP could reap given that it already operates the baseline M-346 Master trainer version.

“The M-346FA is a new, high-performance light combat aircraft that could replace the Su-22. The aircraft provides enormous operational benefits, and has many similarities to the training version M-346 used by the Polish air force,” the company said on its official Leonardo in Poland Twitter account.

As noted by Janes World Air Forces, Poland operates 27 Su‐22M4s, of which 12 are earmarked for service life extension along with all six Su‐22UM3K trainers that are in service. However, the combat capabilities of these aircraft are very low, and the entire Su‐22 fleet is due to be phased out of service by 2024–26.

Besides the Su-22, the ISP currently operates 48 Lockheed Martin F-16C/D Block 50+ Fighting Falcon and 21 MiG-29 ‘Fulcrum’ fighters. Both the Su-22 and MiG-29 are slated to be replaced by 32 Lockheed Martin F-35A Lightning II Joint Strike Fighters (JSFs) under Poland’s Harpia programme. While no separate Su-22 replacement programme currently exists, Leonardo no doubt sees an opportunity for its low-cost M-346A as a supplement to the more capable but much more expensive F-35A.

Theoretically, we have 48 F16, but just about 20 of them are operational, while the rest are cannibalised.

Adicionar à lista duas aeronaves Saab 340 AEW&C.

**) Poland is in talks with Sweden to acquire Saab Airborne Early Warning and Control (AEW&C) aircraft. According to Mariusz Błaszczak, minister of defence, the acquisition of early warning aircraft signifies a strong commitment to bolster Poland's air defence. Specific aircraft details were not disclosed, but most obviously will be the GlobalEye. However, these aircraft will not be available on short notice, therefore Sweden has offered two Saab 340AEW&C aircraft. These two aircraft were returned to Sweden in December 2020 from the United Arab Emirates after delivery of the first GlobalEyes to the United Arab Emirates Air Force (UAE AF).

A Scramble fez um apanhado do último anúncio: Defence Budget Poland ... Too good to be true?

Polish Air Force shows interest in Eagles "on steroids"
(7 de Setembro de 2023)
Citação de: defence-blog
According to a press release from Boeing, the company is showcasing the F‑15EX fighter aircraft to Poland as a potential U.S. Department of Defense Foreign Military Sales program.

The announcement was made at the annual MSPO International Defence Industry Exhibition where Boeing is highlighting advanced defense systems, capabilities and services.

"Poland's interest in the F-15EX confirms its dedication to the preparedness and effectiveness of its military forces," said Tim Flood, senior director, Global Business Development for Europe and Americas. "The F-15EX offers superior interoperability, supportability and affordability along with a robust industry plan that would support Poland’s goal of developing independent defense capabilities."

"The F-15EX is the world’s most advanced fighter with unmatched capability, lethality and survivability and is the right fit to strengthen Poland’s security needs," said Rob Novotny, director, Business Development for Boeing’s F-15 program. "Through enhanced interoperability with U.S. and NATO forces, capacity for technology growth and a 20,000+ hour economic operational airframe life, Poland can expect the F-15EX to win in existing and future threat environments."

Montagem do primeiro F-35 polaco:

First Polish Air Force F-35A takes shape
(8 de Maio de 2024)
Citação de: Scramble
Late April 2024, the first Lockheed Martin F-35A Lightning II for the Siły Powietrzne RP (Polish Air Force), designated AZ-01, was set with weight on its wheels for the first time at Lockheed Martin’s mile-long assembly plant in Fort Worth (TX): a significant milestone for the fighter aircraft as it moves down the production line to the final assembly line, where its control surfaces will be added, along with final systems and engine installation.

According to Lockheed Martin officials its is expected that the first F-35As for Poland are to leave the production plant in the coming months, a timeline unaffected by the company's problems with a major upgrade for the aircraft known as Technology Refresh 3, or TR-3.

The envisioned timing aligns with Polish pilot training, set to begin at Ebbing Air National Guard Base at Fort Smith (AR) later this year. Polish Airmen will also be trained at Eglin AFB (FL), but most probably this only concerns maintainers.

Poland signed a contract for 32 F-35A Lightning II Block 4 fighter aircraft on 31 January 2020. The first batch of eight aircraft will be delivered in 2024-2025 and will be based at Ebbing ANG Base to train 24 pilots and 90 maintainers. The second batch will be delivered to Poland in 2026-2027, with Initial Operational Capability (IOC) for the squadron at Lask in 2026. Full Operational Capability (FOC) for this unit is expected by 2030. In September 2021, it was revealed that a second Polish Air Force F-35A squadron will likely be based at Swidwin / 21. Baza Lotnictwa Taktycznego (21.BLT, 21st Tactical Air Base). From the 32 aircraft ordered, 16 will be assembled at Fort Worth and 16 with the Leonardo Aircraft Divison at the Final Assembly and Check-Out (FACO) Cameri (Italy).
