The Defence Minister Shri Pranab Mukherjee has expressed the hope that the Light Combat Aircraft ‘Tejas’ being developed by the Aeronautical Development Agency (ADA), will be able to fulfill the requirements of our Armed Forces for achieving self-reliance in Defence technology.

Addressing the meeting of the Parliamentary Consultative Committee for the Ministry of Defence here today Shri Mukherjee referred to the continuing intensive user trials of the LCA to meet quality parameters before induction into the Indian Air Force. He reiterated that that the objective of the ADA, the Defence Research and Development Organisation, Hindustan Aeronautics Limited and other agencies involved in the LCA project is to achieve self-reliance for the defence forces. He assured the members that all efforts are being made for induction of the LCA ‘Tejas’ on the basis of the stringent user requirements projected by the Armed Forces.

He however, made it clear that to maintain the high standards of Combat readiness of our defence forces the government will go for procurement of state-of-the-art weapons and equipment from the global market as and when considered necessary as per the security environment and threat perceptions for the country.

The members of the committee were given a detailed multi-media presentation on the various projects at hand with the ADA, Bangalore, particularly the details of the LCA ‘Tejas’, being indigenously developed there. The committee was informed that the LCA prototype have already logged over 200 hours of flying in nearly 400 test flights and so far the results have been very satisfactory. There are a lot of spin-offs from this project for the Aeronautics industry in India in particular and the Indian industry in general.
