Hungarian Pilot Flies Gripen

(Source: Gripen International; issued March 23, 2005)

The first solo flight by a Hungarian Air Force pilot took place at the Swedish Air Force base F 7 at Såtenäs today 23 March 2005.

“It was a fantastic first flight. Gripen was an exceptionally powerful and agile aircraft to fly and with the good weather and perfect preparations, it was an extraordinary combination for my first solo flight" - said Major Fekete Tamás, in a comment after his flight.

Major Fekete Tamás has been in Sweden since January 2005 and has undergone simulator training and flying training with Swedish Air Force flight instructors in the, SK 60 trainer and the dual seat version of the Gripen aircraft.

Another four (4) pilots from the Hungarian Air Force, who also arrived in Sweden in January, have undergone the same conversion training on the Gripen aircraft. This first group of Hungarian pilots will be trained to an Instructor Pilots (IP) level on Gripe and their training of the will be completed by March 2006 in time for the arrival of the first aircraft to the Kecskémet airbase.

Production of the Hungarian Gripen aircraft is well underway at Saab´s facility in Linköping and the first aircraft made its maiden flight on 16th February 2005. The first Gripen fighter aircraft will be delivered in March 2006 and deliveries will be completed in December 2007. In total, Hungary will lease fourteen (14) Gripen fighter aircraft twelve (12) single seat and two (2) dual seats for a period of ten (10) years, between 2006 and 2016. After that Hungary will take ownership of the 14 aircraft and associated equipment.

Hungary was the first NATO country to choose to operate the Gripen, and will be taking delivery of the C and D versions of the aircraft. These aircraft are the latest standard of the Gripen, equipped with full color cockpit displays, a retractable Air-to-Air Refueling (AAR) probe and are fully NATO-interoperable.

BAE Systems Delivers First Fully Functional Helmet-Mounted Display System for Gripen

(Source: BAE Systems; issued April 12, 2005)

ROCHESTER, United Kingdom --- BAE Systems has delivered to Saab AB the first fully functional Gripen helmet-mounted display system, including a high-speed optical head tracker. This event follows the May 2004 first flight of the mechanical Gripen helmet.

BAE Systems received the Gripen helmet contract in 2003 and has been developing the system in close cooperation with Saab AB and partners including Denel Optronics of South Africa. Denel led the development of the electronics unit that incorporates a unique optical head tracker.

The Gripen helmet display system builds on the technology now being delivered on the Eurofighter Typhoon, offering the pilot binocular day/night, 360-degree visibility in a lightweight, comfortable package. The system enables enhanced operational capability with reduced workload by displaying real-time information, such as flight parameters, sensor data, target cueing, and weapon status via intelligent sensors triggered by the pilot's head motion onto the binocular visor. The design provides optimum comfort and protection to the pilot throughout the flight envelope, even in aggressive high-"g" maneuvers.

The second (B) development model helmet will be installed in the Gripen simulator in Linkoping, Sweden, for verification and validation of the software and integration tests with the interfacing computer systems. Full-scale production is anticipated to begin by mid-2006, with delivery to Saab for integration into the Gripen for the South African Air Force.

A variant of the Typhoon/Gripen helmet system employing state-of-the-art digital displays is under development as an alternate helmet design for the F-35 Joint Strike Fighter. This technology has also been adapted for rotary-wing applications and is in flight test in the U.K. as part of the Condor II program.

BAE Systems is an international company engaged in the development, delivery, and support of advanced defense and aerospace systems in the air, on land, at sea and in space. BAE Systems North America is one of America's foremost national security, aerospace, and information systems companies.

Gripen Successfully Completes Air-To-Air Refueling Campaign with NATO Standard Compatible Tanker

(Source: Gripen International; issued April 15, 2005)

During the past month, the Gripen has been undertaking an air-to-air refueling campaign with a Boeing 707 tanker at Saab’s facility in Linköping, Sweden.

The campaign had the objective of verifying Gripen’s air-to-air refueling capabilities with a NATO standard compatible tanker. It included a total of 19 sorties with the latest standard of Gripen, the Gripen C single-seat and Gripen D dual-seat, and a South African Air Force Boeing 707 tanker; the results were very successful.

“The verification flights have been conducted according to plan and all the objectives have been fulfilled. The campaign has been very successful and the cooperation with the South African Air Force has been excellent. During the campaign the full available envelope for Gripen air-to-air refueling has been examined, including refueling at various speeds, altitudes and with various external loads.” says Mats Thorbiörnson, Deputy Chief test pilot at Saab Aerosystems.

The aim of the campaign has been to technically verify Gripen’s refueling capability, which is part of the aircraft’s export adaptation. The Gripen C and D are fully NATO-interoperable and meet the demands for both national and international operations. The air-to-air refueling capability increases Gripen’s operational range and endurance, a major advantage in international operations.

The sorties were carried out in close cooperation with a South African Air Force Boeing 707 tanker and its aircrew and ground crew of twenty, who arrived in Linköping on 19 March. The South African Air Force has extensive experience of air-to-air refueling and has previously verified a number of different aircraft from several air forces during similar trials.

“We are delighted to have been involved in these successful Gripen air-to-air re-fueling trials. It has been a very good experience for my team to work in close partnership with the Saab Gripen team and to have had the opportunity to live and work in Sweden over the past month”, said the team leader of the SAAF tanker crew, Colonel Giel van den Berg.

Saab is one of the world’s leading high-technology companies, with its main operations focusing on defense, aviation and space. The group covers a broad spectrum of competence and capabilities in systems integration.
