Scale models of the next-generation Project 585 (Laika-class) nuclear-powered ballistic missile submarine (SSBN) under development for the Russian Navy and several updated surface combatants were unveiled during a recent Ministry of Defence board meeting in Moscow. Footage of the scale models was shown by Russian television broadcaster Channel One on 24 December 2019.

In April 2019 a defence industry source told news agency TASS that the Malachite Design Bureau in St Petersburg had launched research and development (R&D) work for the creation of a fifth-generation SSBN under the codename Laika, following the completion of preliminary design work the previous year.

At the time, the source did not detail the submarine specifications, saying only that "the Tsirkon hypersonic missile will be among the ship's strike weapons" and "the submarine will feature modular structure and a joint integrated combat management system with artificial intelligence".

According to the scale model recently displayed, the Project 585 submarine has a displacement of 11,340 tonnes, a maximum submerged depth of 600 m, can attain a speed of 35 kt, and has an endurance of 90 days.

The armament suite will incorporate Kalibr cruise missiles (including the land-attack 3M-14 variant), 3M-22 Tsirkon (or Zircon) hypersonic anti-ship missiles, P-800 Oniks (3M-55) anti-ship missiles, 91RU Otvet anti-submarine guided missiles, Khishchnik anti-submarine missiles (according to the open sources, a high-speed torpedo is being developed under this programme), Fizik-1 and USET-80 torpedoes, the Lasta anti-torpedo weapon, PMR-2 rocket-propelled mines, MTPK-1 mine-torpedoes, and surface-to-air missiles for the Igla man-portable air defence system.

Several scale models of surface combatants, including the upgraded Project 11442M (Kirov-class) cruiser, the Project 23550 ice-class patrol ship with the Kalibr missiles, and the updated Project 22800 (Karakurt-class) guided-missile corvette with an increased number of 3S-14 vertical launch systems (VLSs), were also on display.

Corvette "Gremyaschiy" Has Completed a Series of Tests in the Barents Sea
(Source: Russian Ministry of Defence; issued Jan 20, 2020)
The crew of the lead Corvette project 20385 "Gremyaschiy", which is undergoing state sea tests in the Northern Fleet, began preparing for the inter-fleet transition. In the near future, it will go to the Baltic sea.

The ship successfully completed the planned testing program in the Northern Fleet's test sites.

In the White Sea, the ship fired "Kalibr" and "Onyx" cruise missiles at shore and sea targets.

In the Barents Sea, it fired A-190 and AK-630 artillery systems at mock air targets, and torpedo fire at underwater and surface targets using new naval weapons.

The last element of the test was the practice of towing the ship, which the corvette conducted together with the tug SB-523 last week.

The corvette "Gremyaschiy" has been undergoing tests in the Northern Fleet since November 13, 2019. Currently, it is located in the main base of the Northern Fleet – Severomorsk.

Russia to build five more auxiliary tankers

Tim Ripley, London - Jane's Navy International
23 January 2020

Five more replenishment tankers are to be built for the Russian Navy to support warships on long-range missions.

The announcement by Sergey Epifanov, Chief of the Auxiliary Fleet Service in the Russia Ministry of Defence’s (MoD’s) Transport Support Department, was made during a ceremony at Severomorsk naval base, near Murmansk, on 21 January to mark the handing over of the first Project 23130 tanker, Akademik Pashin , to the Northern Fleet.

Speaking to the MoD’s in-house Zvezda television network during the event, he said, “With regard to the prospects [for] these vessels, in 2019 the Minister of Defence of the Russian Federation decided to build five more tankers of this [class].”

Russian frigate Admiral Kasatonov conducts trials before commissioning

Nicholas Fiorenza, London - Jane's Defence Weekly
12 February 2020

Russia's second Project 22350 Gorshkov-class frigate, Admiral Kasatonov, is conducting trials before commissioning, the Northern Fleet press service reported on the Ministry of Defence website. The service announced on 11 February that Admiral Kasatonov had arrived in Severomorsk following trials of its electronic warfare systems with the Northern Fleet in the Barents Sea. This included passive jamming and creating decoys to defend against missile attack.

After replenishment in Severomorsk, the frigate will test its air defence systems. The Northern Fleet said Admiral Kasatonov had already tested its Poliment-Redut air defence missile system during the first week of February against Northern Fleet Su-24 and An-26 aircraft flying at various altitudes and ranges.

Russian Navy ocean-going warship numbers to be radically reduced

Bruce Jones, London - Jane's Defence Weekly
21 February 2020

By 2027, the Russian Navy should receive at least six of the latest Admiral Gorshkov-class frigates, including this second in class Admiral Kasatonov. Source: Russian Northern Fleet press service

The number of Russian large ocean-going warships is to decrease significantly by 2027. This development and the prospects for large naval vessel construction were discussed at the end of 2019, at a special meeting of the Naval High Command, local military media disclosed on 14 February.

At the end of the State Armaments Programme (GPV) 2018-2027, the aircraft carrier Admiral Kuznetsov and nuclear-powered missile cruiser Admiral Nakhimov should remain in operation.

The Kirov-class Orlan nuclear-powered cruiser Pyotr Velikiy, flagship of the Northern Fleet, and possibly the Atlant-class missile cruisers Moskva (first of class) and Varyag will undergo refits and upgrades.

Russia is troubled by delays to both large naval vessel construction and the acceptance of launched naval vessels that remain undergoing trials and are yet to be commissioned. The delays seem more pronounced than in other navies. As elsewhere, construction capacity has become finite. New yards are being built in the Far East. Further construction capacity was acquired with the annexation of Crimea, but mostly for smaller vessels.

Orders are on the books for the construction of additional Yasen-M nuclear-powered cruise missile submarines and Lada-class diesel-electric submarines. According to sources cited by Flot.com on 14 February, by 2027, the Russian Navy should receive at least six of the latest Project 22350 Admiral Gorshkov-class frigates and probably at least one of the modified Project 22350M series frigates currently under construction.

Naval amphibious forces will be supplemented by two improved Ivan Gren-class landing ships. They should also be joined by two Universal Landing Ships to be laid down by the Zaliv shipyard in Crimea in May 2020.

Russian frigate fires hypersonic missile for first time

Tim Ripley, London - Jane's Navy International
02 March 2020

A Russian Navy warship has fired an NPO Mashinostroyeniya 3M22 Zircon (Tsirkon) hypersonic missile for the first time during trials in the Barents Sea.

Russian defence minister Sergei Shoigu confirmed the start of the test programme by the Northern Fleet during a meeting of his ministry's board on 28 February.

"The trials of new armament, including hypersonic weapons, continue. All this will make it possible to qualitatively boost the combat potential of the Russian Navy's Northern and other fleets," Shoigu was reported as telling the board meeting by Russian state news agency TASS on 28 February.

The test launch was part of the Northern Fleet's plan of activity for 2019-25, said Shoigu.

Russia Approves SSGN Deployment Plan Between Northern & Pacific Fleets

Sources in the Defense Ministry said the final SSGN deployment plan had been approved. Five submarines will serve in Russia's Northern fleet, including the first of the Yasen-M class SSGN.

Xavier Vavasseur  03 Apr 2020

By TASS Russian news agency

Yasen-M-class nuclear-powered cruise missile submarine (SSGN of project 885M) will serve in the Arctic. Five nuclear submarines will operate in the Northern fleet. They will be armed with Kalibr cruise and Tsirkon hypersonic missiles. A well-protected base will be built with all the necessary infrastructure for combat duty. Experts said the SSGN will increase the national defense capability. They can control the whole Atlantic Ocean and the eastern US coast, the Izvestia daily writes.

The SSGN can engage in a broad range of missions, expert Igor Kurdin said:

“The subs will reinforce the Navy. They will fight aircraft-carrying groups, monitor adversary submarines with strategic weapons, and strike at important ground targets. The SSGN in the Northern fleet will constrain adversary aircraft carriers. It is not possible to let the carrier with 90-100 aircraft close to the coast. Yasen-class SSGN have the necessary torpedoes and missiles to cope with the task. The patrol areas of aircraft-carrying forces are well known, as well as the methods to fight them,”

Project 885M SSGN are noiseless and enjoy a major modernization potential to operate for a long time.

The Navy is balancing multirole submarines between the Northern and Pacific fleets, expert Dmitry Boltenkov said:

“The Pacific fleet has five Antey-class nuclear submarines of project 949A. Two of them are being upgraded to carry Kalibr, Onix and Tsirkon missiles. The Northern fleet operates only three submarines. It means the fleets have different capabilities in fighting aircraft carriers and their escorts. The new submarines will target Europe, the Atlantic and the eastern US coast,”

Project 971 nuclear submarines in both fleets are more suitable to hunt adversary nuclear submarines, the expert believes.

Project 971 Akula Class submarines. Russian Ministry of Defense picture.

The Northern fleet operates the Severodvinsk Yasen-class lead submarine of project 885. It became operational in 2014. In the coming two years, the Navy has to get several modified submarines of project 885M. They have a modern element base, better equipment and materials against the Severodvinsk.

The nuclear reactor has a new design and its heat-exchanging pipes of the first contour are located in the hull. It decreases the possibility of accidents and crew exposure to irradiation. A multirole information-command system has been designed to control radioactive emission and alarm the crew about excessive irradiation. The life cycle of the rector without recharge is 25-30 years which is comparable to the life cycle of the submarine.

Project 885 SSGN have a revolutionary architecture. Traditionally, Russian nuclear submarines had two hulls. Project 885 has a one and a half hull architecture with most single-hull sections located along the length.

Severodvinsk project 885 Yasen-class submarine launching a Kalibr cruise missile

Another change is the location of 553mm torpedo launchers behind the central post. They can fire antisubmarine torpedoes and missiles. Project 885M SSGN have universal vertical launchers with Onix, Tsirkon and Kalibr missiles. The submarines can stay underwater and strike at surface warships and submarines, stationary ground targets and covertly lay minefields. The SSGN can deliver a missile strike in a surfaced position even close to the berth in the base, the Izvestia said.

Russian Navy Project 23900 LHD

Russian MoD Signs Construction Contract For Two Project 23900 LHD For The Russian Navy

According to TASS news agency, the Russian Ministry of Defense signed a contract with the Zaliv shipyard in Kerch for the construction of the first two Russian universal landing ships (UDC) or LHD for a total amount of about 100 billion rubles on May 22, 2020. This was reported to TASS by a defense industry source.
Martin Manaranche  26 May 2020

“The contract has been signed, its total cost is about 100 billion rubles. The laying of the ships should take place in the coming weeks,” the source told TASS.

TASS does not have official confirmation of contract information. The press service of the Zaliv plant told TASS that the company was technically ready to build helicopter carriers in the interests of the Russian Navy, but noted that they did not have information about the deal and the timing of laying the ships.

The contract covers the construction of two LHDs of project 23900 developed by JSC Zelenodolsk Design Bureau (ZPKB), which is a part of JSC Ak Bars Shipbuilding Corporation (SKAB), for the Russian Navy in Kerch. The latter also controls LLC Shipyard Zaliv.

The first details on Project 23900 developed by ZPKB first surfaced during a visit of President Vladimir Putin to an exposition devoted to the future for the Russian Navy development in Sevastopol on January 9, 2020.
