New Russian command system rapidly creates combined forces
analysis focus army defence military industry army

Five years ago, the Russian armed forces held a unique military operation in Crimea. Foreign observers focused on the appearance of the engaged Russian military. They noted the discipline, uniform and new hardware. But the main changes remained unnoticed at the time, the Izvestia daily writes.

Only after the operation in Syria, western observers began to comprehend that changes concern not the outfit, but a new command system and combat organization. Modern communication means and a changed command structure provided a new possibility to rapidly create combined groups of forces for flexible engagement in any mission.

It is more difficult to notice such major changes than the delivery of new tanks and aircraft. Even large-scale drills do not provide a full perception of them. The command system can be tested only in real combat. Crimea demonstrated that numerous reforms were not in vain. When necessary, the Russian army was capable of immediate deployment and action.

In the 2008 war in Georgia, each arm of forces engaged in its own operation. In 2014 in Crimea, a single and cohesive, although heterogeneous group was created. The Aerospace Forces, the Ground Forces, commandos and paratroopers properly interacted due to a new concept of the automatic command system.

NATO was impressed by the rapid and organized deployment in Crimea and the reinforcement of the Russian group by sea and air, as there was no land corridor to Russia. Transportation difficulties did not create problems for the reorganized military logistics.

The same happened in Syria. It took less than a month to prepare a base thousands of kilometers away from Russia and redeploy aircraft and everything necessary. All regional players were taken aback by the quick arrival of the Russian airpower to the theater of warfare. Since the deployment and up to now Russia supplies its force in Syria with everything it requires.

Crimea only tested the first elements of the new concept. Even tactical drones were something new and did not play a leading role. They developed into a key element of the Russian tactic after the Syrian operation. Their number and role in the troops increased several-fold.

Troops command traversed the same path. Three years of active combat in Syria streamlined it. Today it often happens when commandos on the ground detect targets and aim aviation at them while drones control the results of the strikes. New communication and command systems allowed to temporarily hand over the command of the airpower in Syria to the Admiral Kuznetsov aircraft carrier. All information about the adversary and friendly forces arrived in the Russian headquarters in Humaymim airbase and the National Defense Command Center in Moscow for the top military and political leadership. Ten years ago, such a prospect would be fantastic for the Russian army.

The command system, reconnaissance-strike forces and interaction between arms and types of troops which were tested in Crimea and Syria are actively introduced into combat training in the whole of Russia. It has intensified since 2018. The deep changes in command system allow reinforcing the effectiveness of the Russian army at drills and in combat operations without increasing its strength. Five years ago, the modernized Russian army impressed foreign experts. Since then time has not been lost and the armed forces surpassed the 2014 level, the Izvestia daily writes.

Army 2019: Russia presents new T-15 variant

Mark Cazalet, Kubinka - Jane's Defence Weekly
27 June 2019

Rostec subsidiary Uralvagonzavod (UVZ) presented a new variant of the T-15 heavy infantry fighting vehicle (IFV) at the Army 2019 defence exhibition held in Kubinka, close to Moscow, on 25-30 June. This version uses a modified variant of the Kinzhal 57 mm turret developed by TsNII Burevestnik that was shown in 2018.

The 2019 Kinzhal turret appears to be a cropped version of the one shown in 2018, with a much smaller side profile, which may be indicative of modifications made to the ammunition stowage and feed systems. The turret also appears to be mounted somewhat higher off the top of the hull than the 2018 Kinzhal, which may be indicative of modifications to allow greater weapon elevation.

Of interest is also the fact that both the gunner sight and the commander's independent sight are different, and appear to use the same sighting system as that used on the 2S38 Derivatsiya-PVO, which was first unveiled in 2018, and had a smaller side profile than the 2018 Kinzhal. As such, it is highly likely that some of the development work that has been used for the Derivatsiya has made it into the T-15 turret programme, given that TsNII Burevestnik is the company that developed both the Kinzhal turret and the Derivatsiya.

The 2019 Kinzhal retains many of the same features as the 2018 variant, such as the 57 mm rifled automatic cannon, which has been referred to as carrying the 2A91 GRAU designation in local sources, and the cannon shown was also not fitted with a muzzle-mounted ammunition programmer as was fitted on the Derivatsiya-PVO. It likewise retains the bank of two 9M120 Ataka missiles on the right-hand side of the turret, and the layout of the smoke grenade launchers remains the same. The T-15 host vehicle also did not appear to possess any modifications other than the new turret.

Army 2019: Russia unveils new Sosna variant on BMP-3 chassis

Mark Cazalet, Kubinka - Jane's Defence Weekly
27 June 2019

The Nudelmann Design Bureau unveiled the Sosna SHORAD system mounted on the BMP-3 chassis at Army 2019. Source: IHS Markit/Mark Cazalet

The Nudelmann Design Bureau unveiled the Sosna short-range air defence (SHORAD) system mounted on the BMP-3 chassis at the Army 2019 defence exhibition being held in Kubinka close to Moscow on 25-30 June.

The system was first shown publicly at Army 2018 mounted on the MT-LB chassis. The BMP-3 chassis has both a faster swim speed and greater ballistic protection than the MT-LB chassis.

The Sosna system is armed with 12 9M340 missiles, which are arranged in banks of six on either side of the turret. The missiles are two-stage, with a large booster first stage, and a dart-like unpowered guided second stage containing the warhead.

The Sosna system uses an infrared sensor for target detection and tracking, while the missiles operate on the laser-beam-riding guidance principle. This reliance on passive detection means that the Sosna does not trigger radar warning receivers and can be difficult to detect prior to missile launch. The system is capable of firing on the move.

Por falar em BMP-3

Kurganmashzavod faces uncertain future as state orders stall

The Russian manufacturer of the BMP-3 infantry fighting vehicle, Kurganmashzavod (KMZ), faces an uncertain future owing to a slowdown in state orders and because of increasing obsolescence within its manufacturing plants. This was revealed in a December 2019 interview between the company's Executive Director Peter Tyukov and Russia's Centre for Analysis of Strategies and Technologies (CAST).

Tyukov explains that KMZ shares were purchased in February 2019 by High Precision Systems, which is part of the state-owned Rostec Corporation. Because of this, he states, the plant has been stabilised, it has repaid some of its debts, brought an end to bankruptcy proceedings, and ended the 2018 financial year in a positive state for the first time since 2014.

Russia to unveil new version of Pantsir during massive military parade in Moscow

Citar
Russia plans to unveil its new advanced version of the “infamous” Pantsir anti-aircraft gun-missile (AAGM) system during the upcoming massive military parade in Moscow’s Red Square.

President Vladimir Putin ordered the military to hold the previously postponed Victory Day parade on June 24 as Russia appeared to stabilize its coronavirus outbreak.

For the first time will be demonstrating the upgraded Pantsir short-range air defense (SHORAD) system, called the Pantsir-S1M.

The Pantsir-S1M air defense system is based on the Kamaz-53958 Typhoon chassis and equipped with a new radar and advanced infrared electro-optical target tracking system. It is designed to provide protection against fixed- and rotary-wing combat aircraft, unmanned aerial vehicles, and high-precision weapons, including anti-ship and cruise missiles.

Also stated that the upgraded version of the air defense missile and artillery system Pantsir-S1M has acquired the ability to effectively hit all types of drones. The upgrade work was carried out on the basis of experience gained during the Syrian and Lybian conflicts.

The new missile’s range has been increased to 30 kilometers.

According to Janes, the new variant can launch a new high-speed two-stage missile with extended range and improved target interception characteristics, as well as the baseline 57E6 two-stage missile. Both missiles use a two-stage setup with a detachable boost stage and a passive second stage that lacks a sustainer. Instead it relies on kinetic energy imparted by the booster to reach its target.

The Russian Armed Forces are looking more advanced and cost-effectivity air defense system to replace “troubled” Pantsir (SA-22 according to the NATO designation) anti-aircraft defense system.

According to sources in the Ministry of Defence of the Russian Federation, who spoke on the condition of anonymity, the Russian Army and Navy are dissatisfied with Pantsir complex and looking on absolute new air defense systems. For the army, the Pantsir air defense system proved too heavy, complex and not effective to protect against most of the potential threats. To protect the ships in the coastal zone and in harbors, the naval version of Pantsir has also become too expensive and not very effective.
