New Wheeled Tanks for the Italian Army

The Italian MOD has ordered the first ten Centauro II wheeled tanks from Iveco-Oto Melara consortium (CIO). This award, worth 159 million Euro, that includes the procurement of vehicles, equipment, and logistics, is the first tranche of a planned procurement of 136 vehicles.

Modernizing the Centauro vehicle fleet currently in service with the Italian Army, the “New Blindo Centauro”, as it is called by the Italian Army marks a major step forward compared to the previous Centauro I, in terms of power, observation capability, mobility, ergonomics, firing range, communication, and maximum crew protection.

The new wheeled tank is a member of Iveco’s 8×8 family of vehicles used by the mechanized brigades of the Italian Army. Capable of operating in various scenarios, from national security missions to peace-keeping and support operations including all interventions involving the Italian Armed Forces.

At a gross vehicle weight of 30 tonnes, Centauro II is equipped with a new Iveco Vector 8V EURO III powerpack delivering over 720hp, resulting in a combat power to weight ratio of 24 hp/t.

Coupled to an automatic gearbox with 7 forward and 1 reverse gears, the vehicle uses an 8×8 H-drive architecture with hydro-pneumatic, independent suspension, three steering axles, and central tire pressure digitally controlled system (CTIS) the vehicle offers superior mobility over rough terrain. Centauro II can travel over 800 km on road, at a top speed of up to 105 km/h; three steerable axles enable turning circle radius of 9 meters while the all-wheel drive enable crossing a two-meter wide trench, moving a 60% gradient, and 30% slope at ease.

The CIO Consortium Has Signed A Contract with the Italian Army for the Purchase of 30 “Freccia” 8x8 Medium Armoured Vehicles

(Source: CIO Consortium; issued Jan. 16, 2020)

The Italian Army’s order for a new batch of Freccia 8x8 tank destroyers will allow the production line to remain open pending the finalization of an order for 381 vehicles worth €1.5 billion whose has already been approved by Parliament. (Leonardo photo)

ROME --- The contract for the purchase of 30 “Freccia” 8x8 Medium Armoured Vehicles (5 in Combat version and 25 in Anti-tank version) with ten years integrated logistics support was signed on 27 December 2019 at Palazzo Guidoni, seat of the General Secretariat of Defence and National Armaments Directorate.

The “Freccia” VBM is an 8x8 Armoured Infantry Fighting Vehicle (AIFV) of proven reliability in its various versions (Combat, Anti-tank, Mortar Carrier and Command Post) and represents the result of highly-technological synergies between the Technical Area (General Secretariat of Defence - Directorate of Land Armaments), the Operative Area (Army General Staff) of the Ministry of Defence and the Italian Industry.

Thanks to a hull designed to provide maximum protection, a powerful Iveco engine coupled with the traditional H-drive, three steering axles, HITFIST turret with 25 mm cannon and advanced Command, Control and Communications systems by Leonardo, the “Freccia” VBM assures crews excellent tactical and strategic mobility, and force protection combined with adequate firepower in a wide range of operational scenarios.

The contract makes use of funds allocated in the Tri-ministerial Convention between the Ministries of Defence, Economic Development and Finance, allocating around 1.5 billion Euros to the "Freccia" VBM project in the coming years (up to 2032), drawn from resources approved by the 2017 and 2018 Budget Bills.

The contract marks the resumption of the supply of vehicles to the Italian Army Second Medium Brigade, a unit based on 381 systems in various configurations.

The Iveco – Oto Melara Consortium, CIO in short, was established in 1985 on equal participation between Iveco Defence Vehicles and former Oto Melara, which is now Leonardo. Within the Consortium, Iveco Defence Vehicles is responsible for engines, gears and all the automotive components, the hull and the final integration of wheeled armoured vehicles while Leonardo is responsible for weapon systems, sight and fire control systems and the hull and the final integration of tracked armoured vehicles. Both companies have excellent skills in the field of protection against direct fire, mines and IEDs.

Italy Clears Initial Order for 40 Centauro II Tank Destroyers

Italy’s Ministry of Defence has approved an order for 40 Centauro II wheeled tank destroyers which, along with the Freccia 8x8 infantry combat vehicle, will equip the Italian Army’s all-digital medium brigades. (Italian Army photo)

PARIS --- The Italian Ministry of Defence announced May 28 that it had authorized the award of a production contract to the IVECO-OTO-Melara consortium for a second batch of 40 Centauro II wheeled tank destroyers, with an option on a further 56.

Including the option, a comprehensive ten-year support package, related equipment and an extended warranty, the contract is valued at 1,159 million euros excluding value-added tax. It will be jointly financed by the Ministry of Defence, the Ministry of Economic Development and the Ministry of Economy and Finance.

The vehicles will be delivered in “3.0” standard, which will be able to operate in the Italian Army’s new digitalized Medium Brigades, alongside the Freccia wheeled infantry combat vehicle. The details of the vehicle’s capabilities are classified, but according to the explanatory memo issued May 28 by the National Armaments Director, the overall objective is to deploy “an adequate line of armored vehicles, capable of incorporating the characteristics of mobility, protection, firepower, speed, versatility and interoperability with the VBM Freccia, which is the main vehicle of the combat regiments deployed in operational theaters with medium to high threat levels, including Improvised Explosive Devices (IED).”

According to Italian media, the changes in version 3.0 mainly consist of improvements to the fire control system allowing the use of programmable ammunition, improved observation and sighting systems, and an uprated electrical system.

The B1 version of Centauro currently in service cannot match the capabilities of the Freccia.

A further batch of 100 vehicles, which will complete the Italian Army’s requirements, is awaiting ministerial approval, the memo adds.

The original Centauro B1 tank destroyer has been in service with the Italian Army since 1991; it is armed with an 105mm main gun and is in service with 8 armored cavalry regiments.

The Centauro 2 contract follows an order for 30 Freccia 8x8 armored infantry combat vehicles awarded to the same Iveco-Oto-Melara consortium on Dec. 27, and intended for the Italian Army’s second “medium” brigade.

Italy is spending about €1.5 billion on the Freccia program up to 2032, and plans to buy an additional 381 vehicles in an improved EVO (Evolved) version and delivered in several configurations, including combat vehicle, anti-tank, command post etc.

Italy orders 86 Centauro II 8x8 120mm anti-tank wheeled armored vehicles
POSTED ON THURSDAY, 31 DECEMBER 2020 14:59

According to a press release published on December 30, 2020, General Secretariat of the Italian Defence and of the National Armaments Directorate, the Land Armaments Director Lieutenant General Paolo Giovannini and the Commercial Director of the Iveco - Oto Melara Consortium (CIO) Dr. Eng. Giovanni Luisi, signed a contract for the purchase of 86 Centauro II 120mm anti-tank 8x8 wheeled armored vehicles, plus 10 additional units in option, and integrated logistic support and equipment.

The contract, marking the follow-up of the initial supply of 10 units (purchased with the contract signed in July 2018) on a total need of the Italian Army of 150 units, ensures long-term stability thus strengthening the strategic know-how for the land sector of the national industry of Defence and guaranteeing the production continuity.

The Centauro II is an improved version of the first version of the Centauro 8x8 anti-tank fire support vehicle designed and manufactured by the Italian Iveco and Oto Melara Consortium (CIO). It is a new concept of wheeled armored vehicle capable of operating in any scenario: from national security missions to peacekeeping and support operations including all interventions involving the Italian Armed Forces.

The Centauro II is fitted with a new generation of armor providing high-level ballistic protection with a completely rearranged hull chassis and turret design, add-on armor and technical characteristics tested to the AEP 55 standard, capable to resist against threats such as mines, IEDs and the latest-generation kinetic munitions.

The Centauro II is fitted with a three-man turret armed with the third generation of 120/45 mm gun (optional 105/52mm interchangeable to 120 mm), with integrated and stabilized low-recoil muzzle brake, providing the same firepower as most modern main battle tanks, with the capability to fire all latest generation 120 mm NATO APFSDS and multi-role MP munitions. The turret of the vehicle can be fitted with a remotely operated weapon station HITROLE that can be armed with one 7.62mm or 12.7mm machine gun as well as one 40mm automatic grenade launcher.

Standard equipment of the Centauro II MGS includes a radio system, digital intercom, integrated Battle Management System (BMS), and anti-RC-IED (Radio Controlled Improvised Explosive Device) capable of defeating remote-controlled improvised explosive devices. The Centauro II turret is fitted with the latest generation optronics for the commander and gunner and with a suite of communications and command and control systems ensuring maximum situational awareness.
