Sweden sells fighter planes to Thailand

Published: 17th October 2007 11:28 CET
Online: http://www.thelocal.se/8815/

Thailand's air force confirmed on Wednesday that the country is preparing to buy six Swedish Gripen fighter planes in a deal worth 3.7 billion kronor ($560 million). Air force chief Chalit Phukphasuk also told reporters that a decision would be made after December's general election on whether to buy a second batch of six Saab Gripens.

A source close to the air force told Reuters that Thailand had initially planned to replace its ageing F-5E fighters with US F-16 Fighting Falcons. But the deal eventually fell through since the Americans were "not allowed by their laws to sell weapons to countries whose governments have been ousted in coups.”

Owe Wagermark, director of communications for Gripen International, was delighted with Wednesday's announcement.

"This is absolutely fantastic. It is an important step with regard to our positioning and is incredibly positive for Gripen. It means that we will retain our position as global leaders," he told the TT news agency.

Ola Mattsson, secretary general of the Swedish Peace and Arbitration Society (Svenska Freds), was considerable less enthusiastic.

"It should be completely out of the question for Sweden to sell Gripen planes to Thailand. It's a military dictatorship," he told TT.

Mattsson listed secular tensions in southern Thailand and an arms race in South East Asia as further reasons not to sell.

"The Swedish state shouldn't contribute to a rearmament spiral in the region. Such a move runs contrary to our foreign and security policy," he said.

Since assuming power in a military coup last year, the Thai government has approved a 66 percent increase in military spending.

Russia's Su-30s were long tipped to get the nod ahead of Gripen and the US F-16s. Prior to being removed from his post, former Prime Minister Thaksin Shinawatra is reported to have been close to signing a deal for the Russian fighters.

But last year's military coup would appear to have tipped the balance in Gripen's favour.

34.4 billion baht = 777 milhões Euros / 12 aparelhos = 65 milhões Euros por unidade

(BangkokPost.com) - Air force chief Chalit Phukphasuk insisted Wednesday Gripen multi-role fighters from Sweden will be suitable for tasks in the South of Thailand and around the Andaman Sea.

ACM Chalit said the air force will buy six JAS-39 Gripen fighter jets from Sweden's Saab for 19 billion baht. The fund, he said, will come from a five-year budget starting this fiscal year.

He said that the air force will buy six other jets after a new government is formed, which will be after the Dec 23 general election.

On Tuesday, the cabinet agreed the air force could buy 12 Gripen aircrafts to replace its ageing American-made F-5E fighters at a cost of 34.4 billion baht.

"We have taken into consideration the aircraft we have, and we have processed this matter over a long period of time," ACM Chalit claimed at a press conference. "We proposed it through the Defence Ministry."

He insisted that the procurement is transparent and is worth the money spent.

Sim, e parece-me um valor perfeitamente normal. Qual é a surpresa?

Desculpem-me, mas vamos lá a fazer as contas comme il faut...

Total USD: 560 MM

(olha, rimou

Saab to Discuss Gripen Production in India

Saab is prepared to compromise on production location if the company secures an order from India to deliver 126 JAS Gripen fighters to the Indian air force, the company has said. Saab produces the Gripen at its facilities in Linköping.
Gripen’s main competitors are the F-16 and F/A-18 planes, the Dassault French Rafale, the Russian Mikoyan MiG-35 and the Eurofighter Typhoon.
Saab’s statement follows reports from India’s Ministry of Defence that suggest India will demand at least two-thirds of the aircraft be produced in India. Other MoD reports indicate that suppliers must be willing to produce up to 108 aircraft in India. The full value of the order is $10 billion.
The demand underscores the harsh realities of international business, said Saab spokesman Anders Florenius.
“It would, of course, be great if things were like before, when we would secure an order and produce that order in Linköping or Karlskoga. But that’s not the way the market looks any more,” Florenius said.

A two phase procurement process

The procurement process is divided into two phases;

Phase one covers the procurement of six Gripen fighters, including spare parts and training, and one Saab Erieye AEW system aircraft in the sum of 19,000 billions baht (US$ 600 million), within a five year budgetary commitment from 2008 to 2012.

In Phase two, the RTAF intend to procure an additional six Gripen fighters together with associated equipment, spare parts and training, and a second Saab Erieye AEW system aircraft in the sum of 15,400 billions baht (US$ 500 million) within a five year budgetary commitment from 2013 to 2017.

-Made in USA

March 24, 1999 (by Lieven Dewitte) - Yesterday, a Dutch F-16AM (J-063) shot down a Serbian MiG-29 over former Yugoslavia. This is the first combat success for Dutch F16's and it is also the first combat success for the new MLU version of the F16.
The MiG-29 was in a flight of three and was heading toward a flight of four Dutch F16MLU's (Mid Life Update) that were escorting attack planes. The MiG's were first detected by an AWACS and shortly hereafter by one of the F16's. That F16 then fired an AIM-120B AMRAAM missile which hit home. The kill was confirmed by the AWACS and theF16 is now wearing an MiG-29 kill marking on the fuselage.
