In a new video posted online, the Islamic State of Iraq and Syria (ISIS) claims it has captured weapons and ammunition dropped by the U.S. military that was intended for Kurdish forces defending an embattled Syrian city near the Turkish border. The airdrops Sunday were the first of their kind and followed weeks of U.S. and coalition airstrikes in and near Kobani. In the video, ISIS claims some of the weapons and ammunition was air-dropped by mistake on its positions in Kobani.A senior administration official told CBS News on Sunday that the majority – but not necessarily all – of the bundles dropped by U.S. forces appeared to make it to their intended targets.
SAS named heroes of Kobane in fight against ISTHE SAS has been hailed the heroes of Kobane after helping to prevent the Syrian town being overrun by bloodthirsty jihadis. A team of British special forces were dispatched to the Turkish- Syrian border to help brave Kurdish fighters battle against Islamic State (IS) gunmen. The British troops called in several air strikes, killing dozens of IS fighters and halting their advance towards Kobane, just inside the Syrian border. In one attack, SAS guided warplanes into an area where IS fi ghters were massing for an attack The US jets dropped several 500lb bombs into the area, killing and injuring dozens of fighters. In another strike the SAS pinpointed the location of a large convoy of tanks, armoured personnel carriers and ammo trucks heading towards the area. An SAS team hiding in the surrounding hills directed two US combat planes into the area. The pilots then swooped on the convoy, destroying the vehicles with missiles and bombs. One source last night said: “The SAS deployed to the area around Kobane a couple of weeks ago and have done themselves proud.“The US pilots think they are absolutely great. They have manoeuvred themselves into some great positions so they can call in air strikes against IS militants.“They have done this at no small risk to themselves. If their positions had been identified by IS they would have been lucky to escape with their lives. “The conditions for the British soldiers have been very testing.
Syrian opposition activists and a military commander said the Nusra Front had taken several villages in Idlib from the Syria Revolutionaries’ Front led by Jamal Maarouf, a prominent figure in the moderate opposition to President Bashar al-Assad, according to Reuters news agency.
Dozens of Iraqi Kurdish fighters have crossed the Turkish border to join fighters in Syria pushing back the attack by Islamic State militants on the border town of Kobani.More than 80 peshmerga fighters who arrived at the Sanliurfa airport in the early hours of the morning have reached Kobani. The remaining 70 – who set off from Irbil, the capital the Kurdish autonomous region in Iraq, on Tuesday – are still on the road in Turkey, driving in a convoy carrying heavy artillery and weapons along with armoured vehicles and ambulances. They crossed from Iraq into Turkey at Habur on Wednesday morning where they were met by enthusiastic crowds and Turkish security forces. The convoy is expected to arrive in Syria later on Wednesday.Last week Turkey agreed to let the Iraqi-Kurdish fighters cross through its territory following international pressure to take greater action against the Islamic State (Isis) militants across its borders. The Turkish government said it would only allow peshmerga fighters to enter Kobani and not those affiliated with Kurdistan Workers’ party (PKK), which is outlawed in Turkey and is listed as a terrorist group by both the US and the EU. Turkey views fighter from YPG (Syrian People’s Defence Corps) who ate currently fending off Isis militants as being loyal to the PKK.
