Situational Report: 25 Jan 2015, 15:25 UTC

http://slavyangrad.org/2015/01/25/sitrep-25-jan-2015/

Fighting has been continued everywhere along the frontal line. The situation at the areas of Debaltsevo and Mariupol is especially strained.

LUGANSK area. NAF mopped up Troitskoe and Mius. Army of Novorossiya advanced to the suburbs of Popasnaya and started close fight with UAF. Krasny Yar, Stakhanov and Pervomaisk have been under fire by Ukrainian forces.

Heavy fighting has continued near Debaltsevo and Chernukhino, as well as near Lisichansk. Approaching Debaltsevo, NAF have broken through the 2nd defence line (from four).

DONETSK area. Vostochny district of Mariupol was heavily fired with “Grad” MLRS—according to the accounts of locals, fire came from the area near JSC Ilyich Steel Iron Works and Stary Krim. Ten civilians were killed, more than fifty got injured. Later in the evening there was information about twenty people died. Whereas, the liberation of Mariupol has started—Novorossiya forces are advancing. Fighting for Krymskoe, NAF approaching Orekhovo-Donetskoe. The Militia took parts of Krasnogorovka and Mariinka.

Ukrainian forces are holding their positions approximately in 1,5-2,5 km from the airport terminals. After NAF had pushed the enemy out off Peski, the intensity of fire at Donetsk and suburbs lowered a little bit. However, today UAF has resumed shelling of the Donetsk, and also Krasnogvardeisky and Vostochny districts of Makeevka—at least 6 civilians killed.

NAF defeated a Ukrainian roadblock near Krasny Partizan and took a section of road Donetsk-Gorlovka. NAF pretty close approached Uglegorsk, now Novorossiya troops are mopping up to Mayorsk (near Nikitovka). There is an information about liberation of the village of Dolomitnoe (near Artyomivsk).

Heavy fighting took place near airport, Peski, Gorlovka, and Nikishino. In Nikishino NAF tried to advance against the enemy, but Ukrainian forces strongly repelled the attempt of breakthrough, in the result of what about 7 militiamen were killed and more than 10 injured. According to the Militia’s report, UAF is getting reinforcement near Svetlodar, Peski, and Krymskoe.

Ukrainian forces destroyed a bread-baking plant in Gorlovka, and a hospital in Stakhanov.
Right now

UAF is getting reinforcement in Avdeevka. The Militia reported, that Ukrainian troops had set their postions in residential area just between the dwelling houses, thus NAF was going to attack with infantry not using artillery to avoid casualties among the locals. According to the latest reports, the Militia is successfully closing Debaltsevo cauldron now. Novorossiya forces are on offensive to Mariupol.

Russia arms exports topped $15 bn in 2014

Russia sold over $15 billion worth of arms to more than 60 countries in 2014, President Vladimir Putin said on Tuesday.

“Last year, Russian arms and military equipment were in demand in over 60 countries. The total volume of sales exceeded 15 billion U.S. dollars. New contracts worth 14 billion U.S. dollars were also added to the already significant portfolio of Russian arms manufactures,” Putin told a meeting of the Commission for Military Technology Cooperation with Foreign States.

The president said new challenges and threats forced many countries to revise their military doctrines and modernize their armed forces, adding that “we have to consider these tendencies.”

“Russia will expand its presence on such prospective markets and the Asia-Pacific region, Africa, Latin America and the Carribbean,” Putin told a meeting at the Kremlin.

Given the complicated geopolitical situation, Putin stressed that the export of high technology military products was of great significance to Russia.

“This is important for the renewal of defense industry, for enhancing research, testing and design work and for the resolution of a number of social matters,” he said.

Putin called on domestic manufacturers to make maximum use of Russia’s competitive edge to compete with other world defense providers.

Russia is one of the leading exporters in global market of arms and military technology. Russian-made weapons are supplied to 66 countries, and Moscow has military-technical cooperation agreements with 85 countries.

The increase in Russian arms sales was the result of uninterrupted investment by the government in the 2000s, intended to bring production and weapons capabilities on par with those of the west, says Stockholm International Peace  Research Institute.

“The share of global arms sales for companies outside North America and Western Europe has been increasing since 2005,” said Aude Fleurant, director of Sipri’s arms and military expenditure program, last month.

RIC, formed more than a decade ago, is focussed on strategic issues of multilateral cooperation and democratic international relations.

With two of these nations being permanent members of the United Nations Security Council, the RIC group plays a crucial role in global politics.

Monday’s meet is expected to discuss the Ukrainian crisis and the Iranian nuclear standoff as well as possible instability in Afghanistan post NATO pullout.

The three Foreign Minister’s will also discuss India’s bid to join the Russia-China-led security bloc, the Shanghai Cooperation Organization (SCO).

All three countries have taken similar stands on Syria, vociferously opposing any military interference against Damascus.

The three sides are also eyeing transport links for energy resources through Afghanistan and Central Asia routes that would further boost trade ties.

Russia is the world’s biggest energy exporter while China and India top the list of energy consumers.

Chinese President Xi Jinping is backing the re-establishment of the ancient Silk Route that could bind China and India to resource-rich Central Asia, a trans-Eurasian project spanning from the Pacific Ocean to the Baltic Sea.

Dr Alexander Yakovenko, Russian Ambassador to the United Kingdom of Great Britain and Northern Ireland, Deputy foreign minister (2005-2011).

Russian military flights: facts and myths

Yesterday FCO Permanent Under-Secretary Simon Fraser and I discussed Russian aircraft flights in the international airspace on 28 January.

The British side expressed concern over the fact that operations of Russian military aircraft allegedly caused disruption to the civil aviation in the area close to the UK-controlled airspace.

Western media coverage of this topic tends to focus on Russian military flights, omitting the fact that last year NATO military dramatically increased its airbourne missions along Russian borders. On 29 January British defence ministry spokesman answered a question on the UK Quick Reaction Alert aircraft launches in 2014. Contrary to some statements in media, official statistics show that Russia has not increased its military patrols in the Atlantic Ocean over the year.

We also hear that Russian planes fly with their transponders turned off, which is deemed dangerous and unacceptable. In fact, this is a common practice for military aviation around the globe, including, first and foremost, the NATO military.

Let me once again stress that the concerns of our UK partners are not fully understandable, given that two Russian military aircraft were on a routine air patrol duty over the high seas of the Atlantic Ocean. This flight (as all other routine flights of the Russian military aircraft) was carried out in strict compliance with the international legal norms including International Flight Rules and Regulations, without violation of other countries’ airspace, therefore it cannot be regarded as threatening, destabilizing or disruptive. As far as I know, the British aircrews welcome the training opportunities these flights provide.

Before criticizing Russia, our NATO friends should look at their own activities along Russian borders, otherwise we cannot but view discussion of this subject as propaganda intended to shift attention from increased NATO activity near Russian airspace.

Gazprom team in Egypt to finalise deal on importing Russian gas

February 4, 2015, 8:23 am

Egyptian officials are finalising a gas deal with Russian energy giant Gazprom, local media reports said on Wednesday.

Energy-starved Egypt expects to finalize agreements with four major foreign suppliers of liquefied natural gas (LNG), including Russia’s Gazprom, the Al-Yaum As-Sabia reported.

Chairman of state-run Egyptian Natural Gas Holding Company (EGAS), Khaled Abdel Badie said a delegation from the Russian energy giant arrived in Cairo on Tuesday to complete negotiations on gas deliveries from Russia.

“Intensive meetings with the Russian delegation are underway where the sides discuss the number of shipments on which a contract could be signed, as well as the date of their delivery, prices and a range of technical issues,” said Badie, hinting that the deal is expected this week.

Egypt has signed several deals in past months to import natural gas, which powers most of its homes and factories.

“Technical talks demand certain time to be concluded, and now the Egyptian and Russian sides seek to complete them as soon as possible,” said Badie.

In January, Egypt’s Oil Minister Sharif Ismail said Egypt had agreed with Gazprom to import 35 LNG shipments between 2015 and 2020. The annual amount could reach around 7 shipments, he said.

Egypt, which once exported gas, is going through its worst energy crisis in decades, with rising consumption and declining production turning it into an energy importer.

In October, Egypt’s authorities announced a tender to import LNG from abroad. Seven companies, including British Petroleum, Vitol, Trafigura and Golar LNG, made offers.

Kiev bombardeia hospitais, escolas, zonas residenciais.
