The End of the Rising Sun – The Japanese Surrender in Color

On the sea, Japan still had 4 battleships, 5 aircraft carriers, and over 3,000 other vessels, including 200 human torpedos and 2,400 suicide boats. In the air approximately 13,500 aircraft, including 4,000 fighters and 1,500 bombers.

Given these points, estimated losses were enormous – two to four million casualties on the Allies part, including 400,000-800,000 KIA and five to ten million killed on the Japanese side. Also, time was of the essence as the Soviet Red Army intentions were unknown and invasion of Hokkaido was highly possible.

You'll have to forgive these low-quality screengrabs that I took with my camera, but CBS just revealed the first photographs from the wreck of USS Hornet (CV-8).
