Taiwan Starts Construction On Improved Catamaran Corvette & Minelayers

Taiwan started construction on three new catamaran corvettes and four mine layers in an effort to boost its naval forces.

Xavier Vavasseur  26 May 2019

A keel laying ceremony was held at the Lung Teh Shipbuilding Co. on May 24, 2019 for three catamarans corvette of the improved Tuo Jiang II design (a version featuring enhanced air defense) and four mine-laying ships of the Min Jiang class (with an automated system for laying mines).
The ceremony took place in presence of the President of the Republic of China (Taiwan), Tsai Inwen.

On December 4, 2018, Taiwanese media confirmed that Lung Teh Shipbuilding won a tender for the construction of 11 improved corvettes. Taiwanese media have dubbed these catamaran corvettes as “aircraft carrier killers”, referencing to the PLA Navy growing carrier force. They have a displacement of 680 tonnes and a top speed of 45 knots. They are fitted with eight subsonic Hsiung Feng-II and eight supersonic Hisung Feng-III anti-ship missiles.
The first of three corvettes should be introduced into the Taiwanese fleet by 2025, and the first of four minelayers by 2021.

Sri Lankan navy receives former PLAN frigate

Gabriel Dominguez, London - Jane's Defence Weekly

The Sri Lanka Navy (SLN) has formally received a former Chinese People's Liberation Army Navy (PLAN) Jiangwei I (Type 053 H2G)-class frigate.

The service said in a statement that it officially took over the refurbished 111.7 m-long and 12.4 m-wide vessel on 5 June in a ceremony held at the Shanghai Zhonghua shipyard in China that was attended by the Chief of Staff of the SLN, Rear Admiral Nishantha Ulugetenna.

The vessel, which has a full-load displacement of 2,286 tonnes and a crew of 110 (including 18 officers), will be used for "patrol and surveillance missions in the deep seas around Sri Lanka, providing the maritime security and assistance to search-and-rescue operations", according to the SLN.

The ship, which was first commissioned by the PLAN in 1994 under the name Tongling (542), now bears pennant number P 625. It is scheduled to sail to Sri Lanka on 14 June and is expected to reach the island country by the end of the month.

The move comes only a few weeks after China agreed to provide aid worth USD14 million to Sri Lanka to procure Chinese-made counter-insurgency equipment. The funding - pledged on 14 May during Sri Lankan President Maithripala Sirisena's visit to Beijing - is intended to boost the capability of Sri Lanka's security forces, the president's media division said.

China has also agreed to provide Sri Lanka's police force with 150 vehicles. The donations were pledged less than a month after Sri Lanka endured a series of suicide bombings, which killed more than 250 people.

The funding pledge is the latest that China has offered Sri Lanka to support defence equipment purchases. In 2016 China offered USD18 million to procure Chinese military equipment and also agreed to provide the Jiangwei I-class frigate that was handed over on 5 June.

Nicaragua commissions new Damen patrol vessels

Alejandro Sanchez, Washington, DC - Jane's Navy International
09 July 2019

Nicaragua’s naval force commissioned two Damen Stan Patrol 4207 patrol boats into service on 21 June.

Soberanía I (409) and Soberanía II (411) will be used to carry out maritime security and humanitarian and disaster relief operations in Nicaragua’s territorial waters.

Plans to acquire two Damen Stan Patrol 4207 craft from Damen were confirmed in December 2017. The ships are understood to have previously been operated by Jamaica until 2016 and were overhauled in the Netherlands.

According to the Nicaraguan military, the naval force seized 735 kg of cocaine and 134 kg of marijuana, among other narcotics, in various naval operations during 2018.

French shipbuilder CMN has launched the first two of a planned 39 high-speed interceptor boats it is building for the Royal Saudi Navy.

The launching of the boats, with hull numbers 315 and 316, was announced by the Saudi Arabian defense ministry.

The boats will be built and delivered through a transfer of technology agreement between the Saudi company Zamil Offshore Services and France’s CMN.

Under the deal from April 2018, half of the 39 high-speed boats would be built locally in Saudi Arabia.

ndia hands over two interceptor vessels to Mozambique Navy

Ridzwan Rahmat, Singapore - Jane's Navy International
31 July 2019

Key Points
The Indian government has handed over two fast interceptor boats to the Mozambique Navy
The vessels have been transferred as part of wider efforts to strengthen defence relations between India and countries in the Indian Ocean Region

As part of efforts to boost defence relations between the two countries, India has completed the delivery of two fast interceptor vessels to the Mozambique Navy (Marinha de Guerra de Moçambique).

The vessels were handed over on 29 July in Mozambique's capital city of Maputo, as part of a visit by Indian defence minister, Rajnath Singh, to the country. "India is prepared to raise the level of our bilateral defence engagement and maritime co-operation with Mozambique", said the minister via his official social media account.

Ghana has recently signed a contract worth $200 million to construct a Forward Operating Base (FOB) at Edzinlibo in the Western Region in order to protect the country’s oil and gas infrastructure.

The contract will also include offshore patrol boats for Ghana’s Navy. The forward operating base, according to a statement released by the Ghanaian government, will improve the military’s reaction time during operations. It will allow for the protection of Ghana’s offshore oil and gas infrastructure.

The statement adds that another contract has been signed with Gulf Frontiers for procurement of six additional patrol boats to beef up Ghana’s naval fleet. Gulf Frontiers, based in Accra, provides offshore patrol and transport services to the oil and gas industry in Ghana and the region. Its partners include South Africa’s Paramount Group, making it likely the new vessels are coming from there.

Thailand conducts ceremonial launch for second Krabi-class OPV

•The Royal Thai Navy has launched its second Krabi-class offshore patrol vessel
•The vessel will strengthen the service's maritime border control and marine resources protection capabilities

The Royal Thai Navy (RTN) has held a ceremonial launch ceremony for its second Krabi-class missile-capable offshore patrol vessel (OPV).

The ship, which will be in service as HTMS Prachuap Khiri Khan (552) once commissioned, underwent its ceremonial launch at the RTN's Mahidol Adulyadej Naval Dockyard in Sattahip, Chonburi, on 2 August, the RTN announced on its official website on the same day.

The OPV is the second vessel of its class. Its sister ship, HTMS Krabi (551), was commissioned into service in August 2013. Both vessels are based on the UK Royal Navy's River-class OPVs, which entered service between 2003 and 2007.

Like Krabi , Prachuap Khiri Khan was built by state-owned Bangkok Dock under a technology-transfer agreement signed with BAE Systems. It was laid down in June 2017 and first took to the water in late August 2018.

The vessel has an overall length of 90.5 m, an overall beam of 13.5 m, and a draught of 3.5 m. It has a top speed of 25 kt and a range of 3,500 n miles at 15 kt.

The OPV will be fitted with a combat, navigation, and communication suite provided by Thales and will be capable of launching Boeing's Harpoon surface-to-surface guided-missiles via four (two twin) launchers mounted diagonally amidships.
