FRIEDRICHSHAFEN, Germany --- The European Fire Control System (EFCS) is capable of correctly initialising and firing the new Lockheed Martin GMLRS munitions (Guided Multiple Launch Rocket System), as EADS and its European partners Thales (France), Thales (Italy) and Krauss-Maffei Wegmann have now proven.

During demonstrations at the Greding defence technology establishment in the 3rd quarter of 2004, in the presence of representatives of the German Federal Office of Defense Technology and Procurement (BWB), which commissioned and carried out the tests, it was successfully proven that the EFCS is capable of controlling GMLRS missiles.

The success of these tests marks an important milestone in the development of the new European fire control system. The EFCS will now be integrated in the missile launcher for field tests due to start in early 2005. Production of the first missile launchers equipped with EFCS is expected to commence in 2006.

GMLRS enhances the performance of the MLRS weapons system, enabling it to attack targets up to 70 kilometres away with a maximum of accuracy. These new munitions will be available from 2006 onward.

Together with the EFCS fire control system, they will assure the deployment of the MLRS weapons system for several decades to come.

Through this project, EADS and its partners have demonstrated their ability to implement system improvements to this world-leading rocket artillery system within a very short space of time. This achievement was backed by the know-how and skills of the various partners, but also driven by the collective will to succeed in European collaboration.

The Defence and Communications Systems (DCS) Business Unit is the “Systems House” of EADS and is an integrated part of the EADS Defence and Security Systems Division (DS).

DS, with revenues of about 5.2 billion euros in 2003 and roughly 24,000 employees across nine nations, forms the defence pole within EADS. It offers integrated systems solutions to the new challenges confronting armed forces and homeland security units. It is active in the areas of military aircraft, missile systems, Intelligence, Surveillance and Reconnaissance (ISR) systems with manned and unmanned aerial vehicles (UAVs), battlefield management systems, defence electronics, sensors and avionics, and related services.

EADS is a global leader in aerospace, defence and related services. In 2003, the Group generated revenues of over 30 billion euros and employed a workforce of more than 109,000.
