The Italian Expeditionary Airforce in the Battle of Britain, 1940-41 (a short resume)
During the summer of 1940, eager to claim a share of the spoils once Great Britain capitulated, Mussolini decided to take part in the Battle of Britain. Germany granted permission and the ‘Corpo Aereo Italiano’, C.A.I. for shorts, arrived in Belgium in late October 1940, after the critical daytime stage of the battle had come to an end.

At the time of its introduction the F-14A’s AN/AWG-9 radar was the most sophisticated airborne intercept radar in the world. The powerful radar allowed an F-14 RIO to register up to 24 targets from a distance of over 200 kilometers, and launch fire-and-forget AIM-54 Phoenix missiles against six of them. The system was unique at the time – and was extremely expensive. The individual price of an AIM-54 was over a million dollar.

Flight Of The Concordski
RFE By Tony Wesolowsky
Its maiden flight lasted for a little over half an hour and failed to reach the Mach speed it was engineered for. But when the Tupolev Tu-144 successfully took to the air on December 31, 1968, it gave the Soviet Union bragging rights as the first to put a supersonic airliner into flight, beating its Western competitor by two months.
The sky appeared to be limit for the Concordski, the moniker given to the Soviet world-beater in a nod to its similarities to its luxurious rival, the Concorde.
In a costly Cold War battle for technological supremacy that played out alongside the space race, the Tu-144 bested its British-French rival again in June 1969, when it reached supersonic speeds.
The two aircraft were similar in appearance. Each featured a variant of the delta wing, and a downward sloping needle nose that drew comparisons to a swan’s neck. The most striking visual difference was the pair of canards, or winglets, behind the cockpit of the Soviet aircraft. Under their heat-resistant skins, designed to withstand airspeeds above Mach 2, the differences were more evident.
The Tupolev was slightly longer (65.7 meters vs. 61.7) and heavier and, once a suitable and more powerful engine configuration was settled upon, could reach a higher maximum speed. The Concorde boasted more advanced engine and braking systems, and state-of-the-art air-intake and wing-shaping systems that were controlled by computer.

Lockheed CL-590-1
Yuri Ivashchenko para The Greatest Planes That Never Were
Shortly after the introduction of the MiG-31 high speed fighter-interceptor, Mikoyan i Gurevich began work on an aggressive redesign for an improved model. The MiG-31M was more optimized for beyond visual range than the base model at the expense of some of its close combat capability. Normally fitted just aft of the right wheel well, the GSh-23-6 23mm gatling gun was omitted on the MiG-31M. Carried semi conformally underbelly were six R-37 active radar homing missiles. It was also compatible with the new R-77 medium range active radar homer in place of the R-40 as the secondary weapon. Much of the analog instrumentation in the cockpits had been replaced with multifunction displays. The dorsal spine was enlarged to increase the internal fuel capacity. To improve pilot visibility the three piece front windscreen was replaced by a single piece. The Zaslon radar was replaced by the larger Zaslon-M, increasing the number of targets tracked to twenty four, and six targets simultaneous attack. Two jammer pods were fitted to the wingtips. Much like with other such deep modernization projects like the Su-27M and MiG-29M, the post Soviet Russian Air Force was financially incapable of acquiring these improved fighters.
