The Taliban have overrun large swaths of a key district in Helmand as the militants step up attempts to take control of the southern province that was a main focus for foreign troops in Afghanistan.

The encroachment on Sangin follows a months-long offensive in which the Taliban have taken, and in some cases held, crucial Helmand districts.

Early on Monday morning the Taliban stormed police headquarters in Sangin, a western official with knowledge of the province said, citing local sources. An airstrike, probably by Nato forces, prevented the militants from taking the administrative centre.

On Sunday, Helmand’s deputy governor, Mohammad Jan Rasoolyar, made an unusual plea to the Afghan president, Ashraf Ghani.

“I know that bringing up this issue on social media will make you very angry,” Rasoolyar wrote on Facebook. “But … Helmand stands on the brink. Ninety men have been killed in Gereshk and Sangin districts in the last two days.”

More than a dozen U.S. Army special operations soldiers are trapped in Marjah, Afghanistan, taking cover in a compound surrounded by enemy fire and hostile Taliban fighters after a U.S. special operations solider was killed earlier in the day, senior U.S. defense officials told Fox News late Tuesday.

A U.S. military “quick reaction force” of reinforcements arrived late Tuesday and evacuated the U.S. special operations soldier killed in action, and the two wounded Americans in the compound, according to a U.S. defense official.

The rest of the U.S. special operations team remains in the compound to secure the damaged HH-60 Pave Hawk helicopter in an area surrounded by Taliban fighters.

(Kabul, Jan. 15, 2016) -- The sun was shining and the mountains around Kabul were clearly visible, when the first A-29 Super Tucanos touched down at Hamid Karzai International Airport.
The A-29 is a light-support aircraft capable of conducting close air support, aerial escort, armed overwatch and aerial interdiction. Four A-29 aircraft arrived to intense media fanfare and are a welcome addition to the Afghan National Air Force.
The first Afghan A-29 pilots completed their training late last year, and they are expected to be combat-ready in April.

Rússia oferece 10 mil metralhadoras Kalashnikov às forças afegãs


A Rússia ofereceu hoje 10 mil metralhadoras 'kalashnikov ' às forças afegãs, no âmbito da cooperação "contra o terrorismo", preocupada com os avanços do grupo radical Estado Islâmico (EI) no Afeganistão.

As metralhadoras, entregues no aeroporto militar de Cabul, serão "diretamente transferidas para as (...) forças de segurança", declarou Hanif Atmar, conselheiro para a segurança nacional do presidente Ashraf Ghani.

Serão utilizadas no combate ao "terrorismo internacional, uma ameaça para o Afeganistão, para toda a região, mas também para os nossos amigos russos", adiantou.

Numa altura em que o governo afegão tenta relançar o processo de paz com os talibãs, Atmar garantiu que os esforços nesse sentido serão prosseguidos, mas, explicou, a "nação deve ser capaz de se defender".

Moscovo tem observado com preocupação os progressos no leste afegão dos 'jihadistas' do EI, que tem numerosos combatentes originários do Uzbequistão e do Tajiquistão, duas antigas repúblicas soviéticas fronteiriças ao Afeganistão.
