Contract Signed For Two New Fuel-Cell Submarines for the German Navy

(Source: ThyssenKrupp Marine Systems; issued Sept. 26, 2006)

On September 22 the “ARGE 2. Los 212A” consortium and the German Federal Office of Defence Technology and Procurement (BWB) signed a contract concerning the delivery of another two submarines of class 212A.

ARGE is made up of the companies Howaldtswerke-Deutsche Werft and Nordseewerke, which belong to the ThyssenKrupp Marine Systems shipyard alliance.

Both vessels will be equipped with an air-independent propulsion system based on the hydrogen fuel cell. The second batch for the German Navy will be constructed according to the already tried and tested general design for the first four submarines and will likewise be built in non-magnetic steel.

For the two new vessels, this general design has been adapted to the future deployment requirements of the German Navy.

In addition to expanded and improved surface and underwater sensor technology, the new submarines of class U212A have major innovations in the field of communication. This means that the submarines can be optimally deployed in Network Centric Warfare. They are also equipped for deployment of special forces.

The delivery date for the two submarines is fixed for 2012 and 2013.

For the two ThyssenKrupp Marine Systems companies, this order means the retention of their core industrial competence in the conventional submarine segment. The order will provide long-term security for several hundred jobs in Kiel and Emden.

ThyssenKrupp Technologies is an international manufacturer of high-tech plant and machinery. On the basis of world-leading market positions and innovative system and engineering capabilities, it supplies systems, facilities, specialized machinery and components together with associated services.

Christening of the K130 Class Corvette ERFURT in Emden: A New Benchmark In Corvette Building

(Source: ThyssenKrupp Marine Systems; issued March 30, 2007)

The German Navy’s third K130 corvette, Erfurt, was launched and christened at Emden on March 29. (TKMS photo)

On March 29, 2007, a new corvette belonging to the new class K130 was launched and christened ERFURT in the presence of high-ranking guests from the Federal Ministry of Defence, the Federal Office of Defence Technology and Procurement, the German Navy and industry.

The wife of the Lord Mayor of the town of Erfurt, Sysann Bausewein performed the launch, which took place at ThyssenKrupp Marine Systems’ Nordseewerke Emden GmbH.

In the trail of her sister ships BRAUNSCHWEIG and MAGDEBURG, ERFURT is the third K130 corvette having been launched. Two further corvettes in this class are due to follow by 2008.

The German Navy entrusted the building programme to ARGE 130, a work group consisting of two of ThyssenKrupp Marine Systems’ shipyards - Blohm + Voss and Nordseewerke Emden - and the Bremen shipyard, Friedrich Lürssen Werft. Blohm + Voss, Hamburg leads the work group.

The new generation of corvettes adds still further emphasis to the prominence of German naval shipbuilding. The ships set new standards in matters of range, combat power and endurance and excel in technical equipment as well as in reduced operating costs.

Changes in the global security situation have occasioned new demands, also on the German Navy. The demands include an ever increasing number of foreign assignments in distant waters within the framework of multinational missions. Thanks to their unique qualities, K 130 type corvettes are set to play a highly significant role within NATO alliances.

More than 30 years after the construction of the first submarines of the 206 Class for the German navy, the fourth submarine of the 212A Class was launched in Emden in the name "U 34". For the time being, U 34 is the last unit of the German Navy`s block booking for the construction of a total of four units of the 212A Class that are being built at the Nordseewerke in Emden, "U 32" and "U 34", as well as at the Howaldtswerke-Deutsche Werft in Kiel, "U 31" and "U 33". The submarine received its name, which is composed of the letter "U" and a number, following the tradition of the German Navy.

Press release, 2007-06-26
Contract for the construction of four frigates signed

On Tuesday, June 26, the contract between the Federal Office for Defence Technology and Procurement and ARGE F125 for building four Class 125 frigates was signed. ARGE F125 consists of ThyssenKrupp Marine Systems leading ARGE F125 and Fr. Lürssen Werft.

On ThyssenKrupp Marine Systems' side, the locations Hamburg (Blohm + Voss) and Emden (Nordseewerke) will be involved in the design, construction and delivery of the frigates. Delivery of the first unit is scheduled for 2014.

Main tasks of the Class 125 frigates will be the leading and conducting of stabilization operations within the framework of multi-national operations and the defence against asymmetric threats.

With the Class 125 frigates, the German naval shipbuilding industry will once again prove its internationally outstanding competence in the integration of state-of-the-art technologies. The new type of frigates, for instance, will allow a deployment period of up to two years in the operation area. Compared to previous vessels, the regular crew on the Class 125 frigate is halved. Two rotating crews will be exchanged every four months. Thus, frequent intensive transfer trips between Wilhelmshaven and the area of operation will no longer be required.

The F 125 project will both strengthen the defence technology abilities in Germany and secure the basic utilization of the yards of ThyssenKrupp Marine Systems. Alongside the shipyards that are directly involved, about 800 subcontractors will also be involved in the project through ARGE F125. About 80% of the overall value will be produced in Germany.

Corvette Braunschweig Handed Over

(Source: ThyssenKrupp Marine Systems; issued Jan. 30, 2008)

HAMBURG, Germany --- The BRAUNSCHWEIG, the first of a series of five K130 corvettes for the German Navy, has been handed over on Tuesday, January 29, to the German Office for Defence Technology and Procurement (BWB) at the naval base Warnemuende.

In a small ceremony on board the corvette the acceptance certificate was signed in the presence of representatives of the German Office for Defence Technology and Procurement and the German Navy by Dr. Reinhard Mehl, Managing Director of Blohm + Voss, Friedrich-Wilhelm von Krosigk, Head of ARGE K130, and Katja Zentner, Object Manager K130 at Blohm + Voss, on behalf of the contractor and Construction Director Dietrich Grundmann, Head of the Acceptance Commission, on behalf of the client.

ARGE K130 is composed of the shipyards Blohm + Voss (lead yard), Nordseewerke, both part of ThyssenKrupp Marine Systems, and Fr. Lürssen Werft.

Main tasks of the new corvette class are surface surveillance and surface target engagement. A high degree of manoeuvrability and combat power as well as a significant higher sea endurance enable the corvettes to operate even in distant areas. Home port of the new class of corvettes will be Warnemuende.

The K130 project is of high importance to both the German naval shipbuilding industry and the supporting industry so as to strengthen their core business in key technologies. The platform and ship systems as well as the combat direction system of the K130 feature various innovative solutions. In addition to this, the radar and infrared signatures of the K130 possess stealth characteristics.

As regards the design and construction of the K130 corvettes, importance was attached to make use of the effects of series production to an extent as large as possible. Thus, the three ARGE shipyards design and construct the same sections of each of the five units. Final outfitting of each corvette is done by the shipyard delivering the unit. Blohm + Voss deliver the first and fourth corvette, whereas Fr. Lürssen Werft will deliver the second and fifth corvette and Nordseewerke the third one.
