The award of the Portuguese Ministry of Defence consolidates the international projection of the Lanza 3D radar systems, developed entirely by Indra
The Portuguese Ministry of Defence has awarded Indra, in a public tendering, with the extension of the country’s air surveillance network to the Madeira Islands, as well as the integration into the command and control line within NATO’s sphere.
The contract, for an initial amount of 18 million euros, foresees the implementation of a Lanza 3D radar system in Pico do Arriero, in Madeira, to cover the air surveillance of the archipelago’s zone and supply the tactical communications systems with aircrafts, ships and with the national command and control centre.
In the same contract, the Portuguese Ministry of Defence has included a purchase option of three additional radar systems for the Azores islands as well as its integration in the command and control network, option that can be executed during the 30 month duration of the contract.
The Spanish company has been chosen after an international process wherein groups such as Lockheed Martin, Thales Raytheon Systems and Alenia Marconi Systems have been evaluated as well. The process has been ruled by NATO’s contracting standards and technical specifications, and earns recognition for the technology developed by Indra for this kind of systems.
The Lanza 3D radar system has been developed by Indra for the Spanish Ministry of Defence as a key element of the new long-range air surveillance network which combines the most advanced functions of the market. Particularly significant among the main novelties of the system is the fact that it is transportable, so location can be modified according to needs; it is totally controlled by software and it incorporates three-dimensional detection systems (that calculate the three spatial coordinates of flying objects); it also includes systems able to combat possible measures or interferences aimed at blinding it.
Likewise, the system incorporates an architecture with a high parallel processing capacity, which guarantees the system reliability and the possibility of incorporating any new technological advances that may arise in the future.
