Contract Signed For Two New Fuel-Cell Submarines for the German Navy

(Source: ThyssenKrupp Marine Systems; issued Sept. 26, 2006)

On September 22 the “ARGE 2. Los 212A” consortium and the German Federal Office of Defence Technology and Procurement (BWB) signed a contract concerning the delivery of another two submarines of class 212A.

ARGE is made up of the companies Howaldtswerke-Deutsche Werft and Nordseewerke, which belong to the ThyssenKrupp Marine Systems shipyard alliance.

Both vessels will be equipped with an air-independent propulsion system based on the hydrogen fuel cell. The second batch for the German Navy will be constructed according to the already tried and tested general design for the first four submarines and will likewise be built in non-magnetic steel.

For the two new vessels, this general design has been adapted to the future deployment requirements of the German Navy.

In addition to expanded and improved surface and underwater sensor technology, the new submarines of class U212A have major innovations in the field of communication. This means that the submarines can be optimally deployed in Network Centric Warfare. They are also equipped for deployment of special forces.

The delivery date for the two submarines is fixed for 2012 and 2013.

For the two ThyssenKrupp Marine Systems companies, this order means the retention of their core industrial competence in the conventional submarine segment. The order will provide long-term security for several hundred jobs in Kiel and Emden.

ThyssenKrupp Technologies is an international manufacturer of high-tech plant and machinery. On the basis of world-leading market positions and innovative system and engineering capabilities, it supplies systems, facilities, specialized machinery and components together with associated services.

The German Navy’s third K130 corvette, Erfurt, was launched and christened at Emden on March 29. (TKMS photo)

On March 29, 2007, a new corvette belonging to the new class K130 was launched and christened ERFURT in the presence of high-ranking guests from the Federal Ministry of Defence, the Federal Office of Defence Technology and Procurement, the German Navy and industry.

The wife of the Lord Mayor of the town of Erfurt, Sysann Bausewein performed the launch, which took place at ThyssenKrupp Marine Systems’ Nordseewerke Emden GmbH.

In the trail of her sister ships BRAUNSCHWEIG and MAGDEBURG, ERFURT is the third K130 corvette having been launched. Two further corvettes in this class are due to follow by 2008.

The German Navy entrusted the building programme to ARGE 130, a work group consisting of two of ThyssenKrupp Marine Systems’ shipyards - Blohm + Voss and Nordseewerke Emden - and the Bremen shipyard, Friedrich Lürssen Werft. Blohm + Voss, Hamburg leads the work group.

The new generation of corvettes adds still further emphasis to the prominence of German naval shipbuilding. The ships set new standards in matters of range, combat power and endurance and excel in technical equipment as well as in reduced operating costs.

Changes in the global security situation have occasioned new demands, also on the German Navy. The demands include an ever increasing number of foreign assignments in distant waters within the framework of multinational missions. Thanks to their unique qualities, K 130 type corvettes are set to play a highly significant role within NATO alliances.

More than 30 years after the construction of the first submarines of the 206 Class for the German navy, the fourth submarine of the 212A Class was launched in Emden in the name "U 34". For the time being, U 34 is the last unit of the German Navy`s block booking for the construction of a total of four units of the 212A Class that are being built at the Nordseewerke in Emden, "U 32" and "U 34", as well as at the Howaldtswerke-Deutsche Werft in Kiel, "U 31" and "U 33". The submarine received its name, which is composed of the letter "U" and a number, following the tradition of the German Navy.

Press release, 2007-06-26
Contract for the construction of four frigates signed

On Tuesday, June 26, the contract between the Federal Office for Defence Technology and Procurement and ARGE F125 for building four Class 125 frigates was signed. ARGE F125 consists of ThyssenKrupp Marine Systems leading ARGE F125 and Fr. Lürssen Werft.

On ThyssenKrupp Marine Systems' side, the locations Hamburg (Blohm + Voss) and Emden (Nordseewerke) will be involved in the design, construction and delivery of the frigates. Delivery of the first unit is scheduled for 2014.

Main tasks of the Class 125 frigates will be the leading and conducting of stabilization operations within the framework of multi-national operations and the defence against asymmetric threats.

With the Class 125 frigates, the German naval shipbuilding industry will once again prove its internationally outstanding competence in the integration of state-of-the-art technologies. The new type of frigates, for instance, will allow a deployment period of up to two years in the operation area. Compared to previous vessels, the regular crew on the Class 125 frigate is halved. Two rotating crews will be exchanged every four months. Thus, frequent intensive transfer trips between Wilhelmshaven and the area of operation will no longer be required.

The F 125 project will both strengthen the defence technology abilities in Germany and secure the basic utilization of the yards of ThyssenKrupp Marine Systems. Alongside the shipyards that are directly involved, about 800 subcontractors will also be involved in the project through ARGE F125. About 80% of the overall value will be produced in Germany.

HAMBURG, Germany --- The BRAUNSCHWEIG, the first of a series of five K130 corvettes for the German Navy, has been handed over on Tuesday, January 29, to the German Office for Defence Technology and Procurement (BWB) at the naval base Warnemuende.

In a small ceremony on board the corvette the acceptance certificate was signed in the presence of representatives of the German Office for Defence Technology and Procurement and the German Navy by Dr. Reinhard Mehl, Managing Director of Blohm + Voss, Friedrich-Wilhelm von Krosigk, Head of ARGE K130, and Katja Zentner, Object Manager K130 at Blohm + Voss, on behalf of the contractor and Construction Director Dietrich Grundmann, Head of the Acceptance Commission, on behalf of the client.

ARGE K130 is composed of the shipyards Blohm + Voss (lead yard), Nordseewerke, both part of ThyssenKrupp Marine Systems, and Fr. Lürssen Werft.

Main tasks of the new corvette class are surface surveillance and surface target engagement. A high degree of manoeuvrability and combat power as well as a significant higher sea endurance enable the corvettes to operate even in distant areas. Home port of the new class of corvettes will be Warnemuende.

The K130 project is of high importance to both the German naval shipbuilding industry and the supporting industry so as to strengthen their core business in key technologies. The platform and ship systems as well as the combat direction system of the K130 feature various innovative solutions. In addition to this, the radar and infrared signatures of the K130 possess stealth characteristics.

As regards the design and construction of the K130 corvettes, importance was attached to make use of the effects of series production to an extent as large as possible. Thus, the three ARGE shipyards design and construct the same sections of each of the five units. Final outfitting of each corvette is done by the shipyard delivering the unit. Blohm + Voss deliver the first and fourth corvette, whereas Fr. Lürssen Werft will deliver the second and fifth corvette and Nordseewerke the third one.

German Navy sets course for expeditionary roles By Alex Pape
26 February 2008

Some 10 years ago, following a review of the post-Second World War constitution that had restricted it to a territorial defence role, Germany's Federal Defence Force (Bundeswehr) was in mid-step towards a new post-Cold War modus operandi.

The Bundeswehr had a number of preliminary international deployments under its belt and there was a growing acceptance that out-of-area operations would play an increasingly important part in its future.

The late 1990s saw the German Army and air force participate in combat operations for the first time since 1955.

Although the German Navy (Deutsche Marine) was the first service to venture out of area, deploying mine countermeasures vessels to the eastern Mediterranean and Persian Gulf in 1990-01, it remained less visible throughout the latter part of the decade.

This changed early in the new millennium following 9/11 and the ensuing NATO operations 'Active Endeavour' (OAE) in the Mediterranean and 'Enduring Freedom' (OEF) off the Horn of Africa, and by 2008 the navy's warships were spending ever longer periods of time away from their home ports.

Now, the navy again finds itself in a period of significant transformation as it prepares for another leap forward. The first platforms acquired specifically for international operations in the littoral are on the verge of entering service and the next class of surface combatants designed for stabilisation operations are on order.

Since the new Defence Policy Guidelines were published in May 2003, additional tasks that go beyond the protection of Germany's territory and citizens and the support of its NATO alliance partners have become enshrined in official doctrine.

The new priorities were elaborated further in the first defence White Paper to be issued in Germany for 12 years, the 'White Paper 2006 on German Security Policy and the Future of the Bundeswehr'.

According to the Chief of Naval Staff, Vice Admiral Wolfgang Nolting, the White Paper "re-iterates the navy's expeditionary character and its special responsibility for the seaward security of our country".

The recognition of an expeditionary nature also signifies the final steps in the shift from a defensive-orientated escort force to a navy capable of deploying to, and operating unhindered for extended periods off the shores of, global trouble spots. This will include protection of vital sea lines of communications (SLOCs) and coasts against conventional and asymmetrical threats, according to Vice Adm Nolting.

The navy is also being called upon to support German or allied missions ashore by co-ordinating and commanding joint forces, gathering intelligence and providing surveillance, as well as providing supplies, medical assistance and evacuation when required.

Concrete steps were taken in 2004 with the publication of a 'Concept for the Bundeswehr', which outlined the steps required to transform the three branches into a leaner, modern force prepared for future international missions. As part of this transformation, the foundations were laid for the purchase of ex-Royal Netherlands NavyP-3 Orion maritime patrol aircraft (MPA) and the design and build of Type 125 high-endurance stabilisation frigates.

At the very end of 2004 the federal parliament formalised the legislature's role in authorising (and ending) international missions.

In tandem with the political transformation, the future structure of the fleet was adjusted too. The new organisational structure, which was implemented by mid-2006, maintains Fleet Command in Glücksburg in its overall responsibility as headquarters and supplier of vessels for operations.

However, the major change centres on the arrangement of flotillas, with the existing type-based flotillas abandoned in favour of two larger operations-orientated formations.

:) Deveras, a Alemanha sempre me atraiu.

German Navy’s Fleet Tankers Unable to Supply Warships

Posted on Sep 23rd, 2011

German Navy s Fleet Tankers Unable to Supply Warships

The German navy’s fleet tankers, which are crewed by civilian sailors, are unable to supply its warships operating off the Somali coast because of a labour dispute, according to a defence report obtained Wednesday.

A trade union has refused a clearance for the 329 civilian crew on the four tankers to work extended overtime.

The Defence Ministry declined comment.

The Kieler Nachrichten newspaper reported the vessels were restricted to home waters and could not make trans-ocean voyages, because the crew, who live on board, would only be available for duty for 48 hours per week averaged through the year.

The union refused to renew an accord allowing sailors an annual workload that averages 65 hours per week. The sailors receive extended leave at home to make up for the long hours they work at sea.

The defence document seen by the German Press Agency dpa said this meant the navy did not have adequate manning for longer voyages.

German navy ships are part of Operation Atalanta which protects relief shipments to Somalia from pirate attack. Without refueling at sea from tankers, they must dock in regional ports to obtain fuel.

Laying Down of First 125-class Frigate at Blohm + Voss

(Source: ThyssenKrupp Marine Systems AG; issued Nov. 2, 2011)

HAMBURG --- Attended by numerous guests and representatives from politics, Navy and industry, as well as the Blohm + Voss workforce, the laying-down ceremony for the 125-class (F125) frigate took place at building dock 12 at the Hamburg shipyard.

The ceremony was organized by the F125 Work Group (ARGE F125), consisting of ThyssenKrupp Marine Systems AG – who commissioned Blohm + Voss Naval GmbH to complete the order – and Friedrich Lürssen Werft GmbH & Co.

Following a three-year design and management phase, and six months after production started on the first section, the festive laying-down of the first hull section marks the continuation of the first 125-class frigate according to schedule.

In implementing the F125 frigate program, the German shipbuilding industry will once again be demonstrating its capacity to innovate and its innate strengths. Designed and equipped for deployment as part of allied defense missions and crisis prevention, as well as supporting humanitarian rescue missions, counter-terrorism and the combating of asymmetric threats, the 125-class frigate is one of the world's most advanced frigates.

The 125-class frigate's outstanding mission versatility is matched by an innovative complement model and a systematic, technical implementation of the intensive use capability principle: despite considerably reduced crew numbers, this approach means mission duration can be extended significantly beyond the typical limit for frigates.

The building contract signed in June 2007 stipulates the production of a total of four 125-class frigates, which are to be delivered by the F125 consortium between spring 2016 and 2018. The German Navy's frigate program has a key role to play not only in ensuring the retention of the innovation-driving expertise possessed by German shipbuilding and the suppliers to this sector, but also in maintaining job security for what is one of Germany's key industries.

Main characteristics:
--Length: 149 m
--Breadth: 18 m
--Max. speed: >26 kts
--Displacement: approx. 7000 t
--Complement: max. 190 (with a core complement of up to 120)

German Navy Second F125 frigate "Nordrhein-Westfalen" christened at TKMS Shipyard in Hamburg

The second of a total of four 125 class frigates for the German Navy was christened "Nordrhein-Westfalen" last week at the Hamburg site of ThyssenKrupp Marine Systems. Following the christening of the first frigate "Baden-Württemberg" in December 2013 this is a further important milestone in the shipbuilding program for this frigate class. Hannelore Kraft, Premier of the German state of North Rhine-Westphalia after which the ship was named, performed the christening ceremony. The frigate "Nordrhein-Westfalen" is scheduled to be handed over to the German defense procurement agency BAAINBw in mid-2018. The contract for the four frigates is worth around two billion euros in total.

Premier Hannelore Kraft: "It makes me proud that this ship will carry the name of our federal state across the world's oceans, mooring at many ports as an ambassador for North Rhine-Westphalia. The state government will be pleased to take the opportunity together with the crew of this ship to represent and present our state."

Dr. Hans Christoph Atzpodien, CEO of ThyssenKrupp Industrial Solutions AG: "ThyssenKrupp has its roots in the Ruhr region, so it is even more pleasing that North Rhine-Westphalia is acting as sponsor for the second frigate. The F125 class is a completely new type of ship with innovations across numerous fields of technology. It showcases our leading engineering expertise and points the way forward for German naval shipbuilding."

The ARGE F125 consortium which was awarded the contract to build four F125 class ships for the German Navy in 2007 consists of ThyssenKrupp Marine Systems as the lead company and Fr. Lürssen Werft. The pre-fitted bow sections are being manufactured at the Fr. Lürssen Werft shipyards in Bremen and Wolgast. Construction of the stern sections, the joining of the two sections and further fitting out is being carried out at Blohm+Voss Shipyards in Hamburg.

The four 125 class frigates will replace the German Navy's eight 122 Bremen class frigates. The ships were developed specially for current and future mission scenarios. In addition to the traditional tasks of national and alliance defense, the 125 class frigates are designed for conflict prevention, crisis management, and international intervention and stabilization missions. The ships are capable of remaining at sea for 24 months and will be the first to implement the intensive use principle, i.e. significantly enhanced availability in the area of operation. This capability is supported by a reduced crew size and a two-crew strategy under which the crew can be swapped out on location.

Key data for the F125:
Length: 149 m
Width: 18 m
Maximum speed: >26 knots
Displacement: approx. 7,000 t
Crew: max. 190 (of which up to 120 regular crew members)

Germany has a budget of around 4 billion euros to buy four new multi-role combat ships and plans to issue a tender open to European firms. The new MKS 180 frigates, of about 8,000 tons of displacement,  are intended to be capable of attacking targets on land and underwater, and providing aerial protection to other vessels in a range of 20 km.

The German Defense Ministry has been hit by years of funding cuts and headaches in procurement.

The announcement implies that the Berlin government recognises that the MKS 180 project presents a crucial element in bolstering the size of the German Navy's surface combatant fleet up to 22 ships post-2020 as per a military restructuring plan outline put forth in mid-2011.

German Navy qualifies RBS15 Mk 3 anti-ship missile

Citar
The German Navy has formally qualified the Saab Dynamics/Diehl Defence RBS15 Mk 3 anti-ship missile following a successful operational flight test off the coast of Sweden.

Performed from the K130 corvette Magdeburg on 28 April 2015, the end-to-end test - undertaken on the Swedish Defence Materiel Administration's Härnösand sea range - demonstrated the full performance of the missile system, and proved corrective modifications embodied following two missile launch failures in 2013.

An evolution of Saab Dynamics' earlier RBS15 Mk 2, the Mk 3 introduces a new mission computer, a digital autopilot, an inertial/GPS navigation system, a frequency modulated continuous wave adaptive radar altimeter, and a new electrical servo system. It also offers extended range (over 200 km), improved target discrimination, and better defensive penetration through an extremely low sea-skimming approach, random manoeuvres, and increased thrust in the terminal approach phase.

The Mk 3 additionally brings enhanced tactical flexibility through its ability to execute complex multi-waypoint flight trajectories overland and at varying altitudes. The introduction of GPS confers a capability to strike static land targets to military GPS accuracies.

Germany selected the RBS15 Mk 3 surface-to-surface guided weapon to equip its five K130 corvettes in early 2004 following a competitive evaluation against Boeing's Harpoon Block II and Kongsberg's Naval Strike Missile. Saab Dynamics signed a SEK120 million (USD14.7 million) contract in March 2004 with the ARGE K130 shipbuilding consortium to fund the integration of RBS15 Mk 3 into the K130 design.

The order for the missiles themselves was placed with Diehl Defence in September 2004 by what was then the Bundesamt für Wehrtechnik und Beschaffung (the Federal Office for Defence Technology and Procurement). As prime contractor for the German purchase and partner to Saab Dynamics, Diehl Defence has taken responsibility for final assembly and test, as well as selected sub-assembly manufacture and qualification activities.

The official handover of the first RBS15 Mk 3 missile to the German Navy took place in September 2011. However, introduction to service had been delayed by the 2013 test failures.

In a statement released on 10 June, Diehl Defence said that RBS15 Mk 3 completed its "operational test successfully thereby achieving qualification". It added, "Operational capability was proved with the German Navy corvette Magdeburg at a test site in Swedish territorial waters at the end of April. The operational test comprises the entire performance record ranging from target assignment, mission planning to missile launch and striking the target."

The German Navy is the second NATO naval force to introduce RBS15 Mk 3 into service. In late 2014 Saab and the Polish Navy conducted a successful commissioning and sea acceptance test of RBS15 Mk 3 on board the navy's Orkan-class fast attack craft ORP Orkan .

According to Saab, tests with Orkan as lead vessel, "validated all the ship's interfaces with the necessary power, combat management, and navigation systems". It added, "Testing included a simulated missile-firing exercise, and concluded with sea trials when the ship carried its full complement of eight missiles."

The two remaining Orkan-class vessels, ORP Piorun and ORP Grom , are scheduled to undergo similar systems tests. According to Saab, equipment is now installed in Piorun and will be tested in the near future; testing on Grom will follow later in 2015.

The German Navy is planning an extensive overhaul to its fleet of eight P-3C Orion maritime patrol aircraft (MPA), IHS Jane's has learned.

The overhaul package is expected to run for 10 years and cost EUR567.6 million (USD626.4 million), in order to ensure the platform remains in service for the next 20 years; until 2035.

The upgrade is set to consist of three individual measures including: Mid-Life Upgrade Kits; Instrumental Flight Rules (IFR) capability upgrade; and mission avionic upgrades.

The Mid-Life Upgrade Kits will consist of a complete exchange of the aircrafts' wings and horizontal stabilisers, introducing replacements based on new designs that will offer better corrosion and material fatigue resistance. The measures are planned to be concluded by 2023 and come with a price tag of EUR292.4 million. For this specific upgrade, Airbus Defence & Space and Lockheed Martin Overseas Services Corporation will form a consortium.

The IFR capability upgrade will consist of hard- and software upgrades to the aircrafts' instruments, navigation systems, and the addition of a second VHF radio system. The package will cost EUR58 million and is planned to be concluded by 2019. Contractors for this measure will be Rockwell Collins, Northrop Grumman, and Rhode & Schwarz.

The mission avionic upgrade package will consist of a complete overhaul of the aircrafts' main computer systems responsible for processing and distributing mission related data among the crew members and external parties, it is worth EUR217.2 million, with Lockheed Martin as the contractor.

First German Navy F 125 frigate begins sea trials

(https://www.forumdefesa.com/forum/proxy.php?request=http%3A%2F%2Fi1357.photobucket.com%2Falbums%2Fq745%2Fjolumeme%2FFirst-German-Navy-F-125-frigate-begins-sea-trials1_zpsgygvwfmp.jpg&hash=e4911f515e75131cd8f106e5db055ee1) (http://s1357.photobucket.com/user/jolumeme/media/First-German-Navy-F-125-frigate-begins-sea-trials1_zpsgygvwfmp.jpg.html)

FGS Baden-Württemberg, the lead ship of the F 125 class of frigates, has started builder’s sea trials.

Over 60 soldiers from the future Crew Alpha, lead by their future Captain, have joined the frigate on her first sail from Hamburg to Cuxhaven, Germany.

Over the next couple of weeks, the ship will be testing navigational systems, machinery and weapons. Among other, deployment of speedboats and helicopter coordination were on the testing schedule for April 6.

Though classified as frigates, the four ships of the class are comparable to destroyers in size. They are being built by the ARGE F125 consortium which was awarded the contract to build a total of four F125 class ships for the German Navy in 2007.

The consortium is made up from ThyssenKrupp Marine Systems and the Friedrich Lürssen shipyard in Bremen, which is building the ships in cooperation with TKMS’ Blohm+Voss Shipyards in Hamburg.

The four F 125 class frigates will replace the eight frigates of the F122-class, which will be gradually decommissioned.

These ships are the first ones to run the so-called CODLAG propulsion system. The system essentially consists of electric motors which draw power from diesel generators. The new ships will carry four deployable boats and have two container spots on the middle deck.

Weaponry will consist of HARPOON and RAM missiles, one 127 mm machine gun, two 27 mm and five 12.7 mm guns. The 150-meter ship will have a complement capacity of 190 persons and be capable of achieving a maximum speed of 26 knots.

By the end of the decade, the four ships will be operated by a total of eight crews with a total of 120 personnel each. The Navy refers to this as the multiple-crew model where the eight crews will be operating as a closed team on a rotation principle.

With a length of 149 meters and a displacement of 7000 tonnes, the new frigates will be the biggest operational ships in the German Navy.

The German Navy is set to commission its sixth Type 212A submarine U 36 during an October, 10 ceremony at the Eckernförde navy base.

According to the German Navy, the ceremony will be hosted by the current Deputy Inspector of the Navy, Vice Admiral Rainer Brinkmann.

With the acceptance of the last vessel of the U212 A class, the German Navy is completing its submarine fleet which was previously made up of Type 206 submarines, all of which are decommissioned.

Commander of the crew “Golf”, Corvette Captain Christoph Ploß, will take command of the submarine which will be homeported in Eckernförde as part of the 1st Submarine squadron.

While the U 36 is the sixth vessel in its class, it is also the second improved Type 212A submarine ordered by the German Navy in 2006. U 35 and U 36 are 1.2 meters longer than their sister ships in order to feature a new reconnaissance mast.

Apart from Germany, the AIP submarines are also being constructed by the Italian Navy which recently commissioned its third Type 212A submarine and started sea trials for the fourth and final vessel from the first batch. Unlike Germany’s, Italian Navy’s second batch of submarines will have the same configuration as the first one with the aim of reducing maintenance costs.

The submarines are referred to as Todaro-class in Italy.

Type 212A submarines are built by the German Submarine Consortium in German shipyards Thyssen Nordseewerke in Emden and HDW in Kiel. Fincantieri is responsible for the construction of Italian submarines.

German Navy to receive five additional K130 corvettes 17 October 2016

Germany will buy an additional five K130 type corvettes in 2017 to offset delays to the MKS 180 Multi-Role Combat Ships (MRCSs) programme, the German coalition government announced on 14 October.

(https://www.forumdefesa.com/forum/proxy.php?request=http%3A%2F%2Fi1357.photobucket.com%2Falbums%2Fq745%2Fjolumeme%2Fp1531264_zpsyrdh7ea2.jpg&hash=4dd7511207f37372d581d5077bafc6fb) (http://s1357.photobucket.com/user/jolumeme/media/p1531264_zpsyrdh7ea2.jpg.html)

"To meet new security needs in the Baltic Sea, in the Mediterranean Sea, and globally, the coalition plans to buy five new corvettes for EUR1.5 billion [USD1.64 billion] for the German Navy," the two rapporteurs for the ruling coalition on the influential parliamentary budget committee, Johannes Kahrs and Eckhard Rehberg, said in a joint statement.

The news follows the German Ministry of Defence (MoD) notifying parliament in early October that the final contract negotiations concerning the planned four MKS 180 MRCSs needed to be extended, delaying the project by six months.

Germany upgrades its air defense frigates with longer range radars

Germany has decided to upgrade its Sachsen-class air defense frigates with the aim of improving their contribution to NATO’s missile defense system.

The ships’ long range radars are being replaced with new ones that will have a significantly broadened scope of engagement.

Apart from defending against treats in the ‘conventional’ airspace, the new radars are expected to be capable of defending against ballistic threats coming from outer space, outside of Earth’s atmosphere.

The German Navy is now looking forward to establishing a planning and acquisition process. The service hopes to have the radar system installed on its frigates from 2021.

With this new capability, frigates Sachsen, Hamburg and Hessen will be able to detect all missiles aimed at the NATO region and report the threat back to the NATO missile defense system headquarters in Ramstein, Germany.

The ships will not be able to shoot the missiles down on their own. Instead, the NATO headquarters will be in charge of deciding which unit or units will be tasked with the destruction of incoming missiles.

This role (of missile interception and destruction) has so far been the responsibility of U.S. Navy’s four forward-deployed Arleigh Burke-class destroyers equipped with the Aegis combat system. The destroyers are stationed in the Naval Base Rota in Spain.

Belgian frigates should be capable of performing the same task from 2025 onwards. In 2015, Belgium joined a NATO missile-defense project group that was previously constituted by Germany, Denmark and the Netherlands. The country vowed to introduce an active defense capability to the group with the aim of augmenting the group’s sensor-only capabilities found on Dutch, Danish, and soon, German ships.

Belgium and the Netherlands are already working together on new frigates that will be fitted with exo-atmospheric ballistic missile interceptors.

German Navy Sea Lynx helicopters return to full operational capability

German Navy’s Sea Lynx helicopters returned to their full operational capability after they were grounded in 2014 due to a recurring fault on the helicopters’ fuselages.

The helicopters were pulled from service due to a 20 cm rupture or hole found on 15 of the navy’s 22 helicopters.

The issue was first discovered on a helicopter embarked on the frigate FGS Lübeck during its deployment to operation Atalanta.

The German Navy announced on January 18 that the helicopters can once again be used without any speed or load limitations that were previously put in place as a precaution.

It was further said that all helicopters but one had the issue fixed and passed speed and loading tests. The last helicopter is still undergoing refit works, the service said.

Germany has been operating the Westland Helicopters-built Sea Lynx since 1981. The helicopters serve as main sensors aboard the German Navy’s Bremen-class anti-submarine frigates. Each frigate embarks embarks two Sea Lynx helicopters with 18 personnel.

Both the ‘Sea King’ and the ‘Sea Lynx’ were supposed to be replaced with a multi-role embarked helicopter but this plan failed as the goal of acquiring 30 of such units could not be realized. The Ministry of Defence subsequently decided to go with a reduced number of helicopters and ordered 18 NH90 NTH (Naval Transport Helicopter) in 2013.

As it now stands, the German version of the NH90 is solely a replacement for the ‘Sea King’ as it will not be operating as a carrier of missiles or torpedoes.

Germany to Buy Six MKS Multi-Role Warships – Ministry

ReutersBERLIN, Feb 13 (Reuters) – German Defence Minister Ursula von der Leyen has decided to buy six MKS-180 multi-role warships instead of putting off a decision on two of those ships until 2030, her spokesman said on Monday.

The ministry decided last October to delay a tender for four warships, which was valued at 4 billion euros ($4.24 billion), to ensure that quality standards were met. A decision on two extra warships had initially been planned in 2030.

“The need is there. Now the minister has decided to buy all six of the required MKS-180 ships,” the spokesman said, without providing a new cost estimate for the programme.

The new ships, to be delivered from 2023, will be used for attacking targets on land and underwater, as well as providing aerial protection to other vessels.

The three teams bidding to build the new warships are the Bremen-based shipyard Luerssen and Thyssen Krupp Marine Systems , Blohm + Voss and the Dutch group Damen shipyards, and German Naval Yards paired with Britain’s BAE Systems, according to security sources.

Von der Leyen’s decision comes against the backdrop of increased pressure from U.S. President Donald Trump for Germany and other NATO countries to spend more on their own defences.

Germany is boosting military spending by nearly 2 billion euros in 2017 to 37 billion euros, or 1.22 percent of gross domestic product (GDP), but said it would take time to reach the NATO target of spending 2 percent of GDP on defence.

The German government, together with France, has been pushing for greater European defence and security cooperation, especially after Britain’s vote to leave the European Union.

Berlin has also deepened its bilateral military ties with the Netherlands and Norway with recent agreements.

On Monday, Norway announced that Germany would buy naval strike missiles from its Kongsberg Gruppen for more than 10 billion crowns ($1.20 billion).

The German defence ministry said the two countries would work together on developing the Norwegian firm’s missile.

The MKS-180 ships are to be the first to be outfitted with the new missiles, and they will become standard equipment on German and Norwegian frigates in the longer term.

The German minister’s decision to buy all six ships will not affect the current procurement process, with the two additional ships to be purchased under a separate lot, the spokesman said.

Germany might lease Romanian sail training ship for its officer cadets

Germany is considering leasing a Romanian Navy sail training ship to train its officer cadets as ‘Gorch Fock’, the German Navy’s training ship, is tied to port for extensive repairs.

While the decision has not yet been made, German Navy Vice Admiral Rainer Brinkmann told reporters in Kiel that he expects the decision to be made within the next three weeks, according to dpa.

The decision will also depend on the outcome of safety checks on the Romanian vessel ‘Mircea’ which was built in 1938 by the Blohm & Voss shipyard based on the same design as Gorch Fock.

The Gorch Fock has high safety standards which came about following two separate deaths of officer cadets aboard the ship. In 2008, a female officer cadet fell overboard and died while another cadet died in 2010 after loosing grip at a height of 27 meters during a sail and mast-rigging exercise.

According to Lübecker Nachrichten, as it now stands Germany will deploy two groups of 50 cadets on the ‘Mircea’ this year but the ship will not be charted, remaining under the Romanian flag. Mircea will also keep her regular crew.

Germany is forced to seek solutions for the training of navy cadets after it was found out that the Gorch Fock would have to stay in the dry dock for much longer than initially expected. The German Ministry of Defense even considered scrapping the ship due to the high costs of repairs.

Gorch Fock docked for a regular maintenance period in January 2016 with repair costs estimated at around 10 million euros. Most recent estimates of the costs were placed at around 75 million euros and will allow the sail training ship remain in service beyond 2030.

German F 125 frigate tests RAM, Harpoon missiles

https://navaltoday.com/2017/04/21/video-german-f-125-frigate-tests-ram-harpoon-missiles/

The German Navy recently shared a video of its giant 7,000-ton frigate FGS Baden-Württemberg conducting further firing tests.

This is the second video of the lead ship of a new class of F 125 frigates firing its weapons in the North Sea’s Helgoland shooting range.

The previous one showed the Baden-Württemberg testing its guns and close-in weapon systems.

This time, we are treated to the frigate’s RAM and Harpoon missile firings. The RAM (short for Rolling Airframe Missile) is guided missile weapon system used for ship self-defense. The Harpoon is an over-the-horizon, anti-ship missile system.

Firings of the RAM start at 2:00 while fast forwarding to 3:50 of the video will bring you to a cool slow motion of the Harpoon missile launch. The frigate’s crew launched a total of four RAM and one Harpoon missile during this test.

With this test, the Baden-Württemberg certified her weapon systems and is now set for further functional tests before being officially transferred to the German Navy this summer.

F 125 frigates are a new class of ships set to replace the eight Bremen-Class frigates currently in service with the German Navy.

The four frigates are comparable to destroyers in size and are, with a length of 149 meters and a displacement of 7000 tonnes, the biggest operational ships in the German Navy.

According to the German Navy, the new frigates require only half the crew necessary to operate the Bremen-Class frigates. They will be able to stay at sea for up to 24 months and thereby reduce the transit times for the crews. The crews will swap in regular intervals directly in the areas of operations which means that the ships will have to make fewer port visits.

https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Sachsen-class_frigate

German Navy’s new class of F125 frigates are overweight and keep listing to starboard, Reuters reported on May 12, quoting a confidential report.

Overall four frigates will be built by ThyssenKrupp and Luerssen with the first three already in water.

The lead ship in the class is wrapping up combat system trials and is set for a 2017 commissioning, while the second one recently completed the first set of builder’s trials.

According to the confidential annex to a regular German defense ministry report Reuters cited, the frigates are overweight and list 1.3 degrees to starboard.

German defense ministry did not confirm the report adding that the frigates remained on track “speaking in general terms”, according to Reuters.

The German Navy on multiple occasions shared videos of the FGS Baden-Württemberg, the lead ship in the class, but has never mentioned issues with the listing.

The four F125 frigates will replace the eight frigates of the F122-class, which will be gradually decommissioned. The ships were specifically designed for contemporary and future tasks of the German navy. The traditional duties of state-defense were broadened to encompass conflict prevention, crisis response as well as international intervention and stabilization operations.

By the end of the decade, the four ships will be operated by a total of eight crews with a total of 120 personnel each. The German Navy refers to this as the multiple-crew model where the eight crews will be operating as a closed team on a rotation principle.

The frigates are comparable to destroyers in size and are, with a length of 149 meters and a displacement of 7000 tonnes, the biggest operational ships in the German Navy.

The German defense ministry’s plan for a quick acquisition of additional five K130 corvettes has been brought to a halt following a ruling by the German cartel office on May 18.

The defense ministry wanted to avoid an open procedure by buying the five corvettes from the Lürssen- Thyssen Krupp Marine Systems (TKMS) consortium which built the first five ships.

However, the cartel office upheld a complaint made by shipbuilding competitor German Naval Yards, arguing that an open tender had precedence over a quick procurement.

The cartel office ruling is not the first snag in the acquisition process. According to several reports from April 2017, the price for the new corvettes set by builders Lürssen and TKMS far exceeded the one the ministry of defense expected to get.

Announcing the decision to buy the five ships in October 2016, defense minister Ursula von der Leyen said the ships would cost the taxpayers some €1.5 billion. According to several reports, the shipbuilding duo is asking €2.9 billion for the five corvettes and two training facilities.

German Navy’s fourth and final 125 class frigate (F125) ‘Rheinland-Pfalz’ was christened at thyssenkrupp Marine Systems’ Hamburg site on May 24.

The frigate ‘Rheinland-Pfalz’ is scheduled to be handed over to the German defense procurement agency BAAINBw in spring 2020.

Malu Dreyer, premier of the state of Rhineland-Palatinate after which the frigate has been named, performed the christening ceremony in the presence of high-level representatives from government, the German Navy and the companies involved.

“The German Navy has a long tradition of ships named after the state of Rhineland-Palatinate,” State premier Malu Dreyer, who christened the ship, said. “I would like to combine the christening of the new frigate “Rheinland-Pfalz” with my hopes and wishes that the main challenges facing ‘our’ ship will be peace missions and humanitarian operations.”

The ARGE F125 consortium which was awarded the contract to build four F125 class ships for the German Navy in 2007 comprises thyssenkrupp Marine Systems as the lead company and Lürssen Werft in Bremen. The pre-fitted bow sections are being manufactured at the Fr. Lürssen Werft shipyards in Bremen and Wolgast.

Construction of the stern sections, the joining of the two sections and further fitting out is being carried out at Blohm+Voss Shipyards in Hamburg.

The four 125 class frigates are replacing the German Navy’s eight (Bremen type) 122 class frigates.

The ‘Rheinland-Pfalz’ was launched amid reports that the new ship class is overweight and lists 1.3 degrees to starboard.

The German Navy is currently studying options for the programme to replace the service's AgustaWestland Lynx Mk 88A helicopters, which are primarily used as shipboard helicopters operating from frigates.

Speaking at the UDT 2017 conference in Bremen, Germany, Commander René Levien, a German Navy Staff underwater warfare expert, said that consideration is being given to a mix of manned and unmanned systems, with final numbers still to be determined.

The German Navy’s Lynx helicopters entered service in the 1980s and were updated to the Mk 88A standard around 2000. According to Cdr Levien, the existing engines and avionics will reach obsolescence by 2025. To achieve an initial operating capability (IOC) with the replacement type by 2025, the new aircraft will have to arrive from 2023, he said.

The focus for the replacement capability will be on anti-submarine warfare and anti-surface warfare.

One option is the missionised version of the NHIndustries NFH90 helicopter, currently being introduced by the Germany Navy in a transport and search-and-rescue (SAR) role to replace its legacy fleet of Westland Sea King helicopters. Also under consideration is the latest version of the Lynx: the AW159 Wildcat.

“We are looking at aircraft in a size bracket up to NH90," Cdr Levien noted. "They have to fit the hangars on our frigates." While the NH90 variant would entail benefits in terms of logistics by reducing the number of types in service, the other candidates also bring unique opportunities, including furthering defence co-operation with the United Kingdom.

A UK Royal Navy Wildcat HMA Mk.2 and 11 personnel have been embarked on the German Type 122 frigate FGS Luebeck since April 2017, working with the ship as it conducts German Operational Sea Training (GOST) out of Plymouth

Germany’s first F125 frigate misses commissioning date

German Navy’s newest frigate and the lead ship in its class, the future FGS Baden-Württemberg, has missed its scheduled July 28 commissioning date as it is yet to be handed over by the shipbuilders.

According to German news site Wilhelmshavener Zeitung, FGS Baden-Württemberg is still undergoing adjustments and check ups.

One the issues the news site reported was the frigate’s operations room from where the highly-automated ship will be controlled. This is a complex system as the 7000-tonne frigate (close to the displacement range of a destroyer) will require only half the crew necessary to operate the predecessor Bremen-Class frigates.

According to the German Navy, the F125 will be deploying with little over 100 personnel.

Reporting on the sea trials of the second frigate in the class, the Nordrhein-Westfalen, Germany’s Federal Office of Bundeswehr Equipment, Information Technology and In-Service Support (BAAINBw) in March this year said the frigate successfully completed builder’s trials without mentioning the technical issues or the listing issues Naval Today earlier reported about.

BAAINBw is currently working out problems with the operations room on FGS Baden-Württemberg and the frigate is scheduled to start functional tests by the end of August 2017, the news site quoted a BAAINBw spokesperson as saying.

F125 frigates are a new class of ships set to replace the eight Bremen-Class frigates currently in service with the German Navy.

The navy has developed an alternative crewing model for the frigates with four ships operated by eight crews. The deployment duration for any of the crews should not exceed four months.

New sensor-weapon concepts are prepared for the enhanced flexibility and scalable control-options of the frigates. Almost all weapons on board will be remotely controlled. Passive protection will also be enhanced by automatized surveillance systems.

These ships will be the first ones to run the so-called CODLAG propulsion system. The system essentially consists of electric motors which will draw power from diesel generators. The new ships will carry four deployable boats and have two container spots on the middle deck.

Weaponry will consist of HARPOON and RAM missiles, one 127 mm machine gun, two 27 mm and five 12.7 mm guns. The 150-meter ship will have a complement capacity of 190 persons and a maximum speed of 26 knots.

German Navy’s lead AIP submarine wraps up three years of repairs

German Navy’s first Type 212A submarine ‘U 31’ is in the water again after spending almost three years in the docks undergoing repairs.
As reported by the German Kieler Nachrichten, the submarine was lowered into water and brought alongside by a tug boat.
The submarine has been in the dry dock since 2014 for both modernization and repair works following the submarine’s 2013 accident off the coast of England.
The submarine was commissioned into service in 2005 and only performed one mission in the Mediterranean before sustaining damages and heading for the dry dock.
In addition to repairing the damages, submarine specialist TKMS modernized the U 31s air-independent propulsion system and upgraded its fuel cells during the overhaul.
The U 31 is the first of six vessels in its class built to replace the now decommissioned Type 206 submarines.

The German defense procurement agency BAAINBw has reportedly returned FGS Baden-Württemberg, the lead ship of German Navy’s new class of F125 frigates, to the Blohm+Voss shipyard.

According to a report in the German Kieler Nachrichten, BAAINBw has requested Blohm+Voss – which is part of the ARGE F125 consortium responsible for delivering the four frigates – to repair all defects identified on the ship during trials.

This is the first time the German defense ministry is returning a ship to the shipbuilder after delivery.

Defects cited in the news report include software and hardware issues, likely the same ones which caused her to miss her commissioning deadline this summer. As Naval Today reported earlier, there are problems with the frigate’s operations room from where the highly-automated ship will be controlled.

This is a complex system as the 7000-tonne frigate (close to the displacement range of a destroyer) will require only half the crew necessary to operate the predecessor Bremen-class frigates.

FGS Baden-Württemberg has been experiencing problems ever since it was delivered to the navy for trials. In addition to hardware and software integration, the frigates have a listing problem. They list 1.3 degrees to starboard and are overweight, an issue that could possibly complicate future upgrade options.

F125 frigates are a new class of ships set to replace the eight Bremen-Class frigates currently in service with the German Navy.

They will be armed with HARPOON and RAM missiles, one 127 mm machine gun, two 27 mm and five 12.7 mm guns. The 150-meter ships will have a complement capacity of 190 persons and a maximum speed of 26 knots.

According to the German Navy, the new frigates will require only half the crew necessary to operate the Bremen-class frigates. They will be able to stay at sea for up to 24 months and thereby reduce the transit times for the crews. The crews will swap in regular intervals directly in the areas of operations which means that the ships will have to make fewer port visits.

Future FGS ‘Rheinland-Pfalz’, the fourth and final frigate in the class, was launched at thyssenkrupp Marine Systems’ Hamburg site on May 24, 2017.

All Submarines Broken: German Fleet on Forced Leave
(Source: Stern; published Jan 10, 2018) (Unofficial translation by D-A.com)  By Gernot Kramper

Germany’s six Type U-212A submarines are intended to block the Baltic Sea in case of a military emergency, but at the moment they are all broken down, and being slowly repaired because of missing spare parts. Not a single submarine is ready for use.

October 15 was a black day for the German submarine fleet. U-35 hit a rock on the Norwegian coast with a fin, and then had to be repaired. So far, the story is not so unusual. But U-35 was Germany’s last remaining operational submarine, and since then, the entire submarine fleet has been on vacation indefinitely.

International reputation

The navy has six Type 212A submarines. These boats are not huge models like the superpowers’ nuclear submarines, which are equipped with long-range missiles. They are much smaller vessels, but they can travel silently and are very difficult to locate. German submarines, especially, enjoy a very good reputation. In the hands of an experienced crew, which knows how to exploit the currents of the different water layers, these boats are able to break through the defense of even large naval flotillas and attack the enemy's largest ships. The Type 212A is equipped with hydrogen fuel cells, so it can stay under water for more than two weeks.

Problems from the beginning

In case of war, these small boats are supposed to block the Baltic Sea. But only if the emergency does not happen now. Already, the commissioning of Type 212A reads like a story of bankruptcies and mishaps, as Der Spiegel reported back in 2015.

Add to this the long duration of individual repairs. The leader in this respect is U-31, which has been out of service since 2014. In December 2017, repairs were finally due to be completed, but it will take months before the regular service starts.

A NDR report clearly identifies the cause of the problem. Previously, the Navy maintained its own inventory of major spare parts, which were then immediately available in case of damage. The downside of the solution: These spare parts had to be stored and they were paid for if they were not even needed. This stockpiling was ended, for submarines as well as for other weapons systems, after the end of the Cold War.

Eternal spare parts drama

This is a decision that ultimately led only to additional costs and not to savings. With a VW Golf you can buy every spare part at the next VW dealer. The situation is different for the navy, as spare parts for submarines cannot be bought in water sports supply shops: they must be ordered, and usually custom-made as a special order. This takes a long time and is also far more expensive than if you had additionally built the spare part in the original production.

Nobody maintains a production environment in the hope of spare parts orders for several years. "This is a disaster for the Navy," the defense commissioner of the Bundestag Hans-Peter Bartels told the NDR. "Submarines are one of their capabilities, and this is the first time in history, I believe, that they have had nothing to do for months."

There are no sailors, either

The funny thing is that this disaster has no major impact because the German Navy would not be able to use their submarines anyway: there are only three trained crews available for the six boats.

In the context of NATO, the lack of available submarines again shows the readiness of the German armed forces in a bad light. Only a few weeks ago it became known that fewer than 100 Leopard 2 tanks are ready for use. Again, the lack of spare parts is the cause of the failure.

In the future, the management of spare parts will no doubt be better handled. It remains to be seen when the problems of operational readiness will be solved.

ThyssenKrupp blocked from warship tender

Already suffering from allegations of bribery and cost overruns on several naval orders, ThyssenKrupp Marine Systems has now been barred from bidding to build Germany's next generation of battleships.

n ancestor of ThyssenKrupp Marine Systems built many of the U-boats and battlecruisers that wreaked havoc around the globe during the first and second World Wars, and in recent years the firm has continued to supply the German military with warships.

So it will have come as a shock to the country’s largest shipbuilder that it has been barred from the race to supply the next generation of German battleships. Faced with a program plagued by manufacturing problems, including a new warship that listed, the German defense ministry has taken the unprecedented step of excluding a consortium led by the company, part of the ThyssenKrupp industrial conglomerate, from the bidding process.

The decision was disclosed in a notice sent to the firm’s shipyards by the ministry’s purchasing agency. The letter said the government did not trust ThyssenKrupp and its partner, Lürrsen shipyards, to build the new Multi-role Combat Ship 180 (MKS 180 for short), which is designed to operate anywhere in the world, including in polar seas. The agency also said the consortium’s proposed price of €4 billion ($4.9 billion) for four warships was too high.

The decision was a stunning blow to ThyssenKrupp Marine Systems, although perhaps not a huge surprise to outsiders. The firm has been forced in recent months to pay multiple fines for cost overruns and late deliveries on other contracts, and has been swept up in a major bribery investigation in Israel, its largest customer, which has ensnared close associates of Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu.

The decision follows an embarrassing comedy of errors involving another new warship being built in ThyssenKrupp's Kiel shipyards, the F125 frigate.

The government’s decision means the construction of the MKS 180s is likely to go to one of two foreign-owned consortia: Damen Shipyards in Holland or German Naval Yards, which is owned by a French-Lebanese businessman named Iskander Safa. However, officials said that because the final appropriation of money for the ships must go through Germany’s parliament, politicians there could still throw their weight behind the German yard and put the contract out for rebidding. The Ministry of Defense did not comment.

The procurement agency’s decision follows an embarrassing comedy of errors involving another new warship being built in ThyssenKrupp’s Kiel shipyards, the F125 frigate. The first version of the ship, called the FGS Baden-Württemberg, was returned by the German navy for repairs to defects after it failed its seagoing trials. The ship had been under construction for six years.

According to the newspaper Kieler Nachrichten, the Baden-Württenberg’s central computer system, which was meant to allow the ship to be manned by only half the crew of similar-sized vessels, had failed to function properly. There were also problems with its radar and the ship initially listed to starboard.

ThyssenKrupp’s removal from consideration for the MKS 180 contract could cost the company dearly. The deal had been expected to be worth around €3.5 billion for four ships, plus a likely follow-up order of two more vessels, bringing the total close to €5 billion.

In addition, once the German order was finished, the successful bidder would be free to sell the ships to other interested parties. “Whoever receives the contract will also be able to export the MKS 180,” one shipyard manager told Handelsblatt.

It is difficult to determine precisely how the exclusion will affect ThyssenKrupp financially because the firm does not break out separate profit figures for its shipyard division. Bremen-based Lürssen is a family owned firm and does not disclose results publicly.

The other bidders also face obstacles, however. For example, the German Naval Yards consortium, which includes Britain’s BAE Systems, has never built a ship as big and powerful as the MKS 180, which is said to be the most powerful warship ordered by the navy since the end of World War II.

It is likely the final decision on the awarding of the contract will be political. It is still not clear who will be defense minister in the cabinet of the new coalition government between Chancellor Angela Merkel’s conservatives and the Social Democratic Party. But their agreement to form a government stipulated that production of surface ships should become a key domestic technology.

The Netherlands-based shipbuilding group Damen Shipyards is ready to build German’s new MKS180 frigates at the Blohm+Voss shipyard in Hamburg, the company has told German parliament members.

This is according to a letter seen by German news agency Welt in which Damen, together with its bidding partner Blohm+Voss, underscores the importance of securing shipbuilding jobs in Germany.

The Welt report comes shortly after representatives from ThyssenKrupp Marine Systems (TKMS) and Lürssen, another shipbuilding duo which took part in the MKS180 tender, announced they were excluded from the tendering process. This was reported by Reuters early March.
With TKMS and Lürssen reportedly out of the way, the only competition for the Damen and Blohm+Voss team is a duo made up of German Naval Yards Kiel and Britain’s BAE Systems.

The Europe-wide tendering process for the six ships is expected to be concluded this year. In addition to being late, the ships are already €500 million over budget. Germany initially wanted to order four ships with options for two more but defense minister Ursula von der Leyen announced in February 2017 that the ministry would order all six ships right away.

The 5,000-ton ships are expected to be capable of tackling targets above and below water in addition to supporting land missions.
Armament should feature a 127 mm naval gun while naval surface to air missiles should be capable of hitting targets at a distance of 25 kilometers thereby enabling protection from air threats.
The ships will be equipped with towed sonars for anti-submarine warfare and include sick bays or detention rooms for counter-piracy missions. Additional flexibility would be provided by an embarked helicopter and RHIBs for rapid deployment of boarding parties.

While the planned complement is up to 180 personnel, it has been noted that the number has nothing to do with the designation number in MKS 180.

The German Navy has launched the process of acquiring a fleet of new minehunters for its Kiel-based 3rd Minesweeping Squadron.

A total of eleven vessels are to be acquired, according to Kieler Nachrichten who first reported the news.

The project is still in the early phase, according to the German Navy, and no decision on specific design or capability requirements has been made.

Frigate Captain Martin Schwarz, the 3rd Minesweeping Squadron commander, confirmed to Kieler Nachrichten that the project received green light from Inspector General of the Bundeswehr adding that first units could be ordered from 2022 and delivered from 2027.

The German Navy confirmed that an important requirement would be for the shock-hardened vessels to be capable of operating in mine endangered areas and performing standoff mine countermeasures with unmanned, remotely controlled vehicles.

The new minehunters will bolster the 12 MCM vessels currently based in Kiel. The 3rd Minesweeping Squadron is composed of ten Frankenthal-class minehunters and two Ensdorf-class minesweepers.

German Navy’s only two tankers out of operation

The German Navy has been forced to withdraw its only two tankers from NATO operations this year.

As disclosed, the tanker oldies, Spessart and Rhön, will not be operational until the end of this year.

Due to engine issues, both 1974-built ships will undergo repairs in the following months. The completion of repair works is not expected before the fourth quarter of 2018, the navy said, adding that the causes of damage to the ships’ engines are yet to be determined.

Earlier this year, classification society DNV GL decided that Rhön and Spessart no longer met the relevant class rules.

Both tankers have been experiencing propulsion issues since 2017 and needed to abort their participation in NATO missions.

The navy noted that maintaining the tankers through 2024, as it is currently envisioned, is likely to be more expensive and cumbersome than initially expected.

While the deployment activity of the German Navy increased recently, the navy has lacked funds to renew the fleet. As explained by Vice Admiral Andreas Krause, Inspector of the German Navy, the recent incident shows how necessary for the navy is the fleet modernization as well as financing.

He further said that the loss of the tankers cannot be compensated and that “the German Navy has become too small”.

The tankers were commissioned into the German Navy fleet in 1977.

Germany unveils names of five new K130 corvettes

(https://imagizer.imageshack.com/v2/xq90/923/CWHif7.jpg) (https://imageshack.com/i/pnCWHif7j)

Germany’s defense ministry has announced names of the five new corvettes to be built for the country’s navy.

The second batch of Braunschweig-class (K130) corvettes will be named Köln, Emden, Karlsruhe, Augsburg, and Lübeck. They will also be affiliated with their namesake cities.

As informed, the five vessels will be constructed in phases. ‘Köln’ is scheduled to start construction in January 2019, with a keel laying ceremony planned for April 2019.

Corvette Köln will be followed by Emden, Karlsruhe, Augsburg, and Lübeck. The keel for the final vessel is expected to be laid in December 2020.

In 2017, a contract worth €2.4 billion for the construction of the new corvettes has been awarded to the ARGE K130 consortium, composed of Lürssen Werft, ThyssenKrupp Marine Systems and the recently incorporated German Naval Yards Kiel.

German maritime technology firm Atlas Elektronik and Thales Deutschland have been also contracted to deliver combat systems for the five new K130 corvettes. In addition to combat systems, the contract will see the two companies set up and deliver a test and training center in Wilhelmshaven.

Braunschweig-class corvettes were ordered because of the navy’s increased scope and tempo of operations. Another reason is the fact that the MKS180 Multi-role Combat Ship order was delayed and the corvette announcement was interpreted as an offset to the delays.

The German Navy already operates five K130 ships. The second batch of corvettes will be similar in design to their predecessors, with updated technology.

4 Years and Counting: Germany’s New Warship Postponed Yet Again

FGS Baden-Württemberg, lead ship of the German Navy’s latest F-125 class of frigates, was the first warship ever refused by the German Navy and returned to its builder to fix a large number of hardware and software deficiencies. (Luerssen Defence photo)

It looks top heavy........

German Navy’s newest frigate should have been commissioned in 2014 to replace ageing Cold War-era warships, but it won’t be there until at least the next year due to faulty systems and snowballing cost, local media reported.

Commissioning of the ‘Rheinland-Pfalz’, the lead ship of the brand-new Baden-Wuerttemberg-class frigates, has now been postponed until the first half of 2019, according to Die Zeit newspaper citing a military spokesman. The vessel should have joined the Navy in 2014, but the troubling post-delivery issues plagued the fate of the ambitious project.

The four Baden-Wuerttemberg-class vessels the Navy ordered back in 2007 will come as replacement to the ageing Bremen-class frigates. It is understood they will feature a powerful cannon, an array of anti-aircraft and anti-ship missiles as well as some stealth technologies, such as reduced radar, infrared and acoustic signatures.

Other important features include longer maintenance periods – it should be possible to deploy the newest frigates for up to two years away from home ports.

However, continuous delays mean that the cutting-edge warships – said to allow Germany to project power overseas – will already become outdated by the time they enter service, Die Zeit notes.

The ill-fated F125 frigate made headlines last year, when the German Navy officially refused to commission the vessel and returned it to Blohm & Voss shipyard in Hamburg. This was the first time the Navy has returned a ship to a shipbuilder after delivery.

Little was known about the reasons behind the return, but German media cited a number of crucial “software and hardware defects” that made the warship useless if deployed on a combat mission. Software deficiencies were particularly important as the Baden-Wuerttemberg-class vessels will be operated by a crew of some 120 sailors – just half of the manpower on older Bremen class frigates.

Also, it emerged that the ship is dramatically overweight which reduces its performance and limits the Navy’s ability to add future upgrades. The 7,000-ton ‘Rheinland-Pfalz’ is believed to be twice as heavy as similar-class ships used by the Germans in the Second World War.

Aside from faulty hardware, the price tag of the entire project – including the training of the crew – is also becoming an issue. It is said to have reached staggering €3.1billion ($3.6bn) – up from initial €2.2 billion.

Problems gripping the newest frigates become especially of importance in light of recent warnings that Germany’s naval power is shrinking. Earlier this year, Hans-Peter Bartels, chief of the German parliament’s defense committee, acknowledged the Navy is actually “running out of deployment-capable ships.”

The official said the issue has snowballed over time, because old ships were decommissioned but no replacement vessels were provided. He lamented that none of the of the Baden-Wuerttemberg-class frigates were able to join the Navy.

TKMS submits binding offer for Norwegian, German Type 212 submarine construction

A joint German-Norwegian project to procure common-design Type 212 air-independent propulsion submarines has made another step forward as ThyssenKrupp Marine Systems (TKMS) – the preferred contractor on the project – submitted its binding offer in October this year.

As disclosed by the Norwegian government, the two countries’ procurement agencies, Norwegian Defence Materiel Agency (NDMA) and Germany’s Bundesamt für Ausrüstnung, Informationstechnik und Nutzung der Bundeswehr (BAAINBw), received the binding offer from the main supplier on October 30, 2018, and have begun a joint evaluation of the offer.

The two countries will subsequently enter into joint negotiations with the shipyard with the aim of reaching an agreement and signing a contract in 2019. Should all go according to plans, the first boat will be delivered seven years after the construction contract is signed.

Norway and Germany are procuring six identical Type 212 CD (common design) submarines after TKMS was selected as the preferred bidder in February 2017. French submarine specialist Naval Group also participated in the Norwegian tender but the proposition of acquiring the submarines jointly with Germany likely tipped the decision in favor of Germany’s TKMS.

The German Navy already operates six vessels in the class. The same type of submarine is in service with the Italian Navy.
Norway is acquiring four air-independent submarines to replace the existing six Ula-class submarines that were commissioned between 1989-1992. The submarines were designed to last for 30 years and will reach the end of their life in the mid-2020s.
The country has also brought in UK-based BMT Defence Services (BMT) as a consultant in the project.

In addition to the submarine cooperation, Germany and Norway have established a navy-to-navy cooperation, research and development cooperation and a missile cooperation.
The new Type 212 CD submarines will share the low signatures of the Type 212 class but will have extended range, speed and endurance to allow worldwide operations, according to TKMS.

The German Ministry of Defence is expected to continue with its effort to replace the navy's ageing Westland Mk 88A Sea Lynx anti-submarine warfare/anti-surface warfare (ASW/ASuW) helicopters, an industry official told Jane's on 27 November.

Speaking at the Berlin Security Conference, Dan Bedoya from Sikorsky said that a competitive acquisition document for between 24 and 30 new ASW helicopters is expected to be released by the Bundeswehr "in the near future".

"An AWE [Auswahlentscheidung: selection decision document] is due in the first quarter of 2019," he noted.
The German Navy has 21 Sea Lynx helicopters that it is looking to begin replacing from about 2023. Sikorsky's parent company, Lockheed Martin, is pitching the MH-60R Seahawk, while Airbus is proposing the Sea Lion variant of the NHIndustries NH90 NATO Frigate Helicopter (NFH) and Leonardo the AgustaWestland AW159 Lynx Wildcat.

Bedoya's comments come weeks after Lockheed Martin announced it was teaming with Rheinmetall in its bid, with the two companies signing a letter of intent (LOI) in early October. While the details of the Lockheed Martin/Rheinmetall bid have not been disclosed, the MH-60R is equipped with the Thales/Raytheon AQS-22 Airborne Low-Frequency Sonar (ALFS) and previous Foreign Military Sales of the type have included torpedoes, 12.7 mm GAU-21 (M3M) and 7.62 mm M240 (FN MAG) machine guns, AGM-114 Hellfire laser-guided missiles, and 70 mm rockets that have been upgraded with BAE's Advanced Precision Kill Weapon System laser guidance kit.

Another German submarine runs aground in Norwegian waters

The German Navy’s newest Type 212 submarine, the U36, reportedly came into contact with the sea bottom as it was departing the Royal Norwegian Navy base Haakonsvern.

German news site Der Spiegel first reported the accident, citing navy officials.
Video footage of the damage is currently being assessed in order to determine whether the boat could return to sea, according to the report.

At the time of the accident, the U36 was on a five-month training deployment in Norway, which started in January this year.
The training deployment is part of the bilateral cooperation between German and Norway, two partners in the procurement of six Type 212 CD (Common Design) submarines.

U36 is the second German Type 212 submarine to be damaged in Norwegian waters in less than two years. In October 2017, the fifth submarine in the class – U35 – damaged its X-shaped rudder during deepwater tests off the coast of Norway.

Following the U35 accident, the German Navy was briefly left with no operational submarines in its fleet. The U36 was the first to return to sea in 2018, followed by U31 and U33.

German sub U36 returning to operations after ground contact in Norway

German Navy submarine U36 is ready to return to operations after one of its rudders came into contact with the ground at the Norwegian Navy’s Haakonsvern base.
The damage to one of the submarine’s four rudders was repaired by Norwegian Navy divers over a course of two days.

Repairs were supported by specialists from ThyssenKrupp Marine Systems, the boat’s builder.

The navy disputed last week’s reports of the submarine sustaining significant damage highlighting the fact that the Type 212 submarine would not have to return to its homeport for repairs.
The navy also noted that only 2 percent of the boat’s 20 square meters of rudder surface had been damaged. U36 was sailing at a low speed of just 1 kn = 1,8 km/h at the moment of the contact with the ground. Trying to illustrate the extent of the damage, the navy compared the damage to a scratch on a vehicle.

The incident occurred last week, during the submarine’s five-month training deployment to Norway, Germany’s partner-nation in acquiring Type 212CD submarines.

The boat’s commander said the incident would not affect the remainder of the deployment which is now scheduled to conclude with U36’s return to Eckernförde, Germany, in early June.

The Norwegian and German defense procurement agencies have evaluated a thyssenkrupp Marine Systems proposal for the construction of six Type 212 CD (common design) submarines and are now expecting a contract with the shipbuilder to be signed in the first half of 2020.

The governments of Norway and Germany are currently in the phase of contract negotiation with TKMS, who was selected as the preferred bidder in February 2017.

Norway is acquiring four units while Germany, which already operates six Type 212 submarines, will acquire another two.
The two countries expect the deliveries to start in 2026.

In addition to joint procurement of submarines, Germany and Norway have established a navy-to-navy cooperation, research and development cooperation and a missile cooperation.

The new Type 212 CD submarines will share the low signatures of the Type 212 boats in service with the navies of Germany and Italy but will have extended range, speed and endurance to allow worldwide operations, according to TKMS.

The German Navy is set to receive two new double-hulled fleet tankers that are scheduled to start replacing their predecessors from 2024.

The acquisition was approved by the German chief of defense on July 17.

To be referred to as Type 707, the new ships will replace the Type 704 single-hulled tankers that have been in service with the navy for over 40 years.

At 170 meters, the new ships will be 40 meters longer than the FGS Rhoen and Spessart. They will also have an increased capacity, being able to carry 15,000 cubic meters of fuel. An option for the embarkation of up to 20 containers is also included.
Type 707s will have an increased maximum speed to be able to keep up with more modern navy ships. Displacing over 20,000 tons, the ships will be able to attain speeds of over 20 knots.

What is more, they will have a civilian complement of only 20, compared to the over 40 required by the Type 704 ships, according to the navy.

Citing synergies, Germany chooses NH90 as Sea Lynx successor

After choosing the NHIndustries-developed NH90 to replace its old Sea King search and rescue helicopters, the German Navy now announced that it has picked the NH90 as replacement for the Sea Lynx Mk 88A helicopters.

The navy said the decision to have a single aircraft type adjusted for performing both combat and search and rescue and transport roles would ensure “a smooth transition and synergies in later operations.”

The first search and rescue NH90 variant, the Sea Lion, is scheduled to be delivered this year.

The first frigate helicopter version, to be referred to as the multi-role frigate helicopter (MRFH), is to be delivered in 2025, according to the navy.

At the time of the first MRFH delivery, the German Navy’s Sea Lynx fleet will be over 40 years old. The whole fleet was grounded in 2014 after cracks had been found on the fuselages of 15 of the 22 units. They returned to full operational capability in January 2017.

The NH90 NATO Frigate Helicopter (NH90 NFH) is already flown by the navies of France, Italy, Norway, Belgium and the Netherlands.

A embaixada confirmou as declarações à DW.

Dutch shipyard Damen Schelde Naval Shipbuilding, together with its partners Blohm+Voss and Thales, has won a tender for the German Navy’s MKS 180 multi-purpose combat ship project.

The announcement was made by Germany’s Federal Ministry of Defense on January 14, 2020.
The decision is yet to receive parliamentary approval in Germany, according to the ministry.

In April 2019, shipbuilders German Naval Yards Kiel- (GNYK) and Damen-led teams were invited to submit their final bids for the project. Following the evaluation, Damen was selected as the preferred bidder.

Under the program worth more than USD 5 billion, the navy plans to build at least four and up to six MKS 180 ships that would have a displacement of around 9,000 tons and a length of 155 meters. The core crew of the ships would be a complement of 110 while an additional 70 crew would be in charge of the mission modules.

The ships will be built at Blohm + Voss shipyard in Hamburg and at other shipyard locations of the North German Lürssen Group, the parent company of Blohm + Voss, Damen said in a separate statement.

In this way, around 80% of the total net investment will be spent in Germany. The same applies to the electronic application systems that are supplied by Thales Nederland to its own design. Around 70% of the services will be provided by the German subsidiary of Thales and by other German subcontractors.

MKS 180 is envisioned as a modular ship, meaning that it will be capable of assuming anti-submarine, anti-air and surface warfare missions. The navy wants the ship to have all potential mission modules onboard to be capable of exchanging them on a “Flexdeck” without having to go into port. Another desired module would contain a diving chamber and mine warfare equipment.

German Naval Yards Kiel takes legal actions against MKS 180 procurement

German Naval Yards Kiel (GNYK) will take legal action against the procurement decision of the German Federal Ministry of Defence to grant the MKS 180 project to a consortium led by Damen.

Xavier Vavasseur 21 Jan 2020

“After a thorough examination, we have decided to file a complaint against the award decision,” said a spokesman of the shipyard. He added: “We have serious doubts about the legality of the decision and will therefore exhaust all legal possibilities at our disposal.”

GNYK is thus exercising its right under public procurement law to have the decision reviewed.

The Federal Office of Bundeswehr Equipment, Information Technology and In-Service Support (BAAINBw) announced on January 14th that Dutch shipyard Damen Schelde Naval Shipbuilding B.V. won the MKS 180 Multi-Purpose Combat Ship tender. Damen is partnering with Blohm+Voss and Thales to supply the German Navy with at least four frigates of type “Multi-purpose battle ship MKS 180”.

Germany’s $6.7 billion frigate deal with Dutch shipbuilder Damen may be the last of its kind
By: Sebastian Sprenger   4 days ago

COLOGNE, Germany — Following the pick of Dutch shipbuilder Damen this week to build at least four new frigates for the German Navy, officials in Germany are finalizing a new policy meant to steer similar contracts to local shipyards in the future.

As drafted, the multi-ministry policy would establish the construction of surface ships as a key technology area in Germany’s security-industry fabric. The designation means Berlin may seek an exception from certain European Union acquisition regulations. Chief among those is a requirement to compete national programs across the bloc, which was the case with the large-frigate-style MKS 180 ships.

German Naval Yards, which teamed with ThyssenKrupp Marine Systems, also had been vying for the deal, portraying their offer as the most German of the proposals, with the promise of jobs and technology kept in the country. Damen, in turn, said this week it would build the ships at the plants of its bid partner Lürssen Group, most notably Blohm+Voss in Hamburg.

New rules on Germany's key strategic industries have been in the works since the governing parties CDU and SPD agreed on a coalition agreement in 2018. That pact said surface shipbuilding would get the designation as a key technology area, but it didn't say when or how.

For the Defence Ministry, the upcoming revision of the 2015 “Strategy Paper of the Federal Government on Strengthening the Defence Industry in Germany,” as the document is titled, is the vehicle that would make it so.

Lürssen Laid Keel Of Second K130 Batch 2 Corvette ‘Emden’

On January 30, the Lürssen Peene shipyard laid the keel of the German Navy’s seventh K130 Braunschweig-class corvette, the future Emden (F266) vessel.

Nathan Gain  02 Feb 2020

« Their first steel components had only been cut four months earlier, » the Bundeswehr said on in an official statement.

The Emden is the seventh ship in the Braunschweig-class. The German Navy put the first five ships into service between 2008 and 2013. In 2017, the Bundeswehr placed an order for five additional K130 corvettes. Work on the second batch’s first unit, the Köln (F265) corvette,  began in February 2019.

Two of the five Batch 2 corvettes are being built at the Lürssen shipyard in Bremen, while the three others are being manufactured and pre-equipped at the German Naval Yards site in Kiel. The ships’ stern are manufactured at the Lürssen Peene shipyard. Lürssen subsidiary Blohm + Voss will be in charge of connecting the ship fore and aft parts in Hamburg, a major step known as the “wedding thrust”.

The roughly 89-meter-long corvettes will also be fully equipped and put into operation in Hamburg. They also go through their functional tests and approvals from Hamburg – in coordination with the Bundeswehr and the German Navy.

First pictures of the K130 Batch 2 also suggests that the future ships will receive the latest variant of the 76mm main gun by Leonardo (with a stealthy shield, while existing K130 main guns have a round cupola). Existing K130 Corvettes weapon systems include four Saab RBS-15 anti-ship missiles, two 21-cell RAM surface to air missile systems, an Oto Melara 76/62 gun and two Rheinmetall MLG 27 guns.

Another Milestone - Corvette "Karlsruhe" Is Laid Down

(https://imagizer.imageshack.com/v2/xq90/924/StvzTx.jpg) (https://imageshack.com/i/poStvzTxj)
Germany’s Wolgast Peene shipyard on October 6 laid down the eighth K130 corvette, the future FGS Karlsruhe. Once the second batch has been completed, all ten K130 corvettes will be operated by the 1st Corvette Squadron. (GE Navy photo)

On Tuesday, October 6th, 2020, the keel-laying of the eighth corvette will take place during a ceremony at the Wolgast Peene shipyard. The corvette will be named "Karlsruhe". Due to the corona pandemic regulations, this solemn act will take place with a reduced group of participants.

In September 2017, the construction of five more corvettes was approved for delivery by 2025, so that the German Navy will have ten corvettes in the future. All will then be operated by the 1st Corvette Squadron based in Rostock-Warnemünde.

The ships of the K130 class were put into service from 2008. The corvettes of the Braunschweig class are state-of-the-art vessels, particularly in terms of ship technology as well as weapon and command systems.

The five planned new corvettes will be named "Köln", "Emden", "Karlsruhe", "Augsburg" and "Lübeck". The cities of the same name also sponsor the corvettes. The naval leadership selected these names on the basis of various criteria.

Following the line of the traditional decree of the Bundeswehr, the Navy decided on ship names from its own history. When assigning sponsorships and names, the Navy also continued the basic approach of the first corvettes of the K130 Braunschweig class, which are already in service.

Boats 6-10 are supplied by the consortium (ARGE) K130, consisting of Fr. Lürssen Werft, ThyssenKrupp Marine Systems and German Naval Yards Kiel. Two forward sections will be manufactured and pre-equipped at the Lürssen shipyard in Bremen, and the other three at the Kiel shipyard of German Naval Yards. The five aft sections are manufactured at the Wolgast Peene shipyard while the Lürssen subsidiary Blohm + Voss is responsible for joining the fore and aft sections.

German Navy’s MKS 180 Multi-Purpose Combat Ship Program Renamed F126

(https://imagizer.imageshack.com/v2/xq90/924/B7Ydo5.jpg) (https://imageshack.com/i/poB7Ydo5j)
The German ministry of defense (MoD) announced this morning that the MKS180 frigate program has been renamed "Fregatte Klasse 126" or F126, which is in line with the German Navy (Deutsche Marine) typical designation for frigates.

Xavier Vavasseur 02 Dec 2020

The project Multi-Purpose Combat Ship (Mehrzweckkampfschiff) 180 “MKS180” will be renamed to Frigate Class 126 “F126” – The ship is based on the principles of Intensive Usability and Multi Crew Concept of the Frigate Class 125 “F125”. The first 4 ships are scheduled for delivery in 2028.

For the record, the German parliament (Bundestag) formally approved the procurement of four multi-purpose MKS 180 vessels in June 2020. In the contract, the Bundeswehr keeps an option open for the procurement of two additional ships. The same month, Damen Shipyards Group and the German Bundesamt für Ausrüstung, Informationstechnik und Nutzung der Bundeswehr (BAAINBw) signed the contract for the construction of four MKS 180 frigates for the German Navy.

Damen and Thales signed last month the contract for the delivery and full integration of Thales’s Mission and Combat System for these frigates.

While the name of the first-in-class F126 is still unknown, the designation follows the series of German Navy frigates classes:

F125 Baden-Württemberg-class
F124 Sachsen-class
F123 Brandenburg-class
F122 Bremen-class
F120 Köln-class

The German BAAINBw also announced yesterday that an agreement was reached for the procurement of eight RAM close in weapon systems (CIWS) for the future frigates.

F124 frigate (left) and LCF (right). The replacement for both classes is set to be a unique Frigate class.

Germany And The Netherlands Joining Forces For F-124 / LCF Frigate Replacement

Germany and the Netherlands have signed an agreement yesterday to work jointly on a next generation frigate which will replace the German Navy Sachsen-class (F124) and the Royal Netherlands Navy De Zeven Provinciën-class (LCF) frigates.

Xavier Vavasseur 18 Dec 2020

Dutch State Secretary Barbara Visser and her German counterpart Benedikt Zimmer signed the agreement via visio conference.

“Both countries will collaborate in the field of research and development and acquisition, among other things. The countries are working on equal operational requirements”.
Dutch MoD

Barbara Visser added that “It is also the intention that the industries of our countries will benefit optimally from this.”

For the record, the ties between the Dutch and German naval defense industry are already strong, with Damen and Thales NL taking a key role for the F126/MKS180 frigate program. F126 is a future large (Length: approximately 155 meters at waterline, Displacement: maximum 9,000 tonnes) surface combatant of the German Navy (Deutsche Marine).

Meanwhile, Damen is also fully involved in the M-frigates (Karel Doorman-class) replacement program for both the Royal Netherlands Navy (Koninklijke Marine) and Belgian Navy (Marinecomponent/Composante marine).

The German Navy has a total of three Sachsen-class F124 frigates. They are designed as multi-purpose vessels for escort, protection and maritime control. Its focus is on air defense: With its SMART-L radar, a single vessel class can, for example, monitor the airspace over the entire North Sea. The radar of the Sachsen-class is able to detect more than 1,000 targets at the same time.

Sachsen-class frigates are fitted with 32x Mk41 VLS for SM-2 and ESSM missiles and two RAM launchers. The can also deploy Harpoon anti-ship missiles and torpedoes.

General characteristics

143.0 m in length
17.4 m wide
6.0 m draft
5,800 t displacement
Crew complement: 230 sailors + 13 aircrew

About De Zeven Provinciën-class / LCF Frigates

The Royal Netherlands Navy has 4 air defense and command frigates (LCF) of the De Zeven Provinciën-class. The ships can protect a complete fleet from enemy threats from the sea and from the air (aircraft and missiles). Specialized in anti-aircraft warfare (AAW) vessel, LCF vessels are fitted with 40x Mk41 Vertical Launch Systems which are used to house and launch Evolved Sea Sparrow (ESSM) and SM-2 Block IIIA missiles.

In addition, the ships are equipped to allow the deployable and operational command staff of the Royal Netherlands Navy, the Netherlands Maritime Force (NLMARFOR), to control large-scale (maritime) operations.

The first-in-class ship received her SMART-L Multi Mission radar upgrade from Thales in March 2019. All four ships of the class will be upgraded with the new radar (and other systems) as part of a modernization programme. This new radar is capable of BMD mission (surveillance and tracking of ballistic missiles) up to 2000 km while simultaneous maintaining the air defence capability. The Dutch Defence Material Organisation (DMO) announced in April 2020 that it has selected Italian company Leonardo to supply new 127mm naval gun systems.

Damen, HSVA to test German Navy’s F126 model frigate

April 27, 2021, by Naida Hakirevic

Damen Naval and the Hamburg Ship Model Basin (HSVA) have signed a contract for comprehensive cooperation relating to hydrodynamic optimisation and the execution of an extensive series of model tests for the German Navy’s new F126 or MKS 180 class frigates.

The optimisation work and the tests constitute part of the early development stage during the ship design phase.

As part of this process, the properties of the planned ship will be tested under real-life conditions. As such, a true-to-scale model of the F126, measuring several metres long, will be seen for the first time.

At the request of the German Navy, together with its partners Blohm+Voss and Thales, Damen will build a total of four frigate class 126 ships after it was named the successful bidder in 2020 as part of a European tender spanning several years.

The first ship is expected to be handed over to the German Navy in 2028 in Hamburg. The ships will be constructed in Germany with building taking place in Hamburg, Kiel and Wolgast.

By appointing HSVA, Damen said it will be able to draw exclusively on German expertise for testing and trialling the ship’s design. Over the next few months, the model ship will undergo a wide range of tests in various HSVA testing facilities in Hamburg.

In addition to tests to evaluate ship resistance, propulsion and manoeuvring in smooth water, the ship’s seakeeping will also be considered, and special attention will be paid to ensuring a high-quality propeller design.

As explained, this extensive series of tests is the only way to ensure that the high demands that will be placed on the frigates in real-life scenarios will be met.

The upcoming tests will be the most significant milestone so far and an indicator of the success of the ship’s development to date, according to the shipbuilder.

Upon the conclusion of the contract, Hein van Ameijden, Managing Director of Damen Naval, said: “I’m absolutely thrilled that the tank tests will provide us with initial practical results in terms of the ship’s development. We have made huge progress despite Covid-19.”

“I would therefore like to take this opportunity to thank our team and the engineers at HSVA who will now carry out extensive tests with us on the first model.”

Further development work will be carried out and hundreds of sub-systems will be integrated following the test and simulation stage.

The F126 project

In June 2020, the German Federal Office of Bundeswehr Equipment, Information Technology and In-Service Support (BAAINBw) and Damen signed the contract for the design and construction of four MKS 180 multi-purpose combat ships for the German Navy.

In December, the ship type was renamed Frigate Class 126 (F126).

Damen is fulfilling the order as the main contractor together with its partners Blohm+Voss and Thales, and many German suppliers.

The ship design is to be provided by Damen in the Netherlands, Thales is responsible for the weapon control and command system, and the four initial ships will be built at Blohm+Voss in Hamburg as well as in Wolgast and Kiel.

German Navy’s frigate Lübeck departs on final mission before retirement

January 18, 2022, by Fatima Bahtić
German Navy’s Bremen-class frigate Lübeck has departed on its final mission to the Aegean Sea before its decommissioning scheduled for this summer.

Arriving in the sea area between Greece and Turkey, the ship will be part of the Standing NATO Maritime Group 2 (SNMG2). The ship’s crew will work in close collaboration with the Turkish and Greek coastguards and the European Border and Coast Guard Agency (FRONTEX). The main task of the frigate will be to monitor the maritime space.

Finally, in early summer, the ship is expected to return to its homeport. It will be decommissioned after 32 years in service.

“With the arrival in June, we will probably have gone to sea for eight months under Corona conditions, i.e. without going ashore,” Commander of the frigate “Lübeck” Captain Kai Röckel commented. “At home, we were able to master comprehensive repairs and tests and are now again optimally prepared for our upcoming assignment.”

Bremen-class frigate Lübeck was laid in June 1987 at the yards of Nordseewerke, Emden, and launched on 15 October 1987. After undergoing sea trials, it was commissioned into the German Navy in 1990.

After commissioning the vessel participated in several international deployments. In 1994, 1995, and 1996 it was active in the Adriatic Sea as part of NATO’s Operation Sharp Guard. In 2003-2004, and again in 2005-2006, Lübeck deployed in support of Operation Enduring Freedom, an anti-terrorism mission.

The frigate spent 2013 undergoing a refit at Kiel, before returning to Operation Atalanta in autumn 2014. On 21 August 2017 Lübeck departed Wilhelmshaven under the command of Captain Matthias Schmitt to replace the frigate Brandenburg in SNMG2 in the Aegean Sea.

A christening ceremony was held today (21 April) at Blohm+Voss shipyard in Hamburg for the first of five K130 Batch II corvettes, Köln, built for the German Navy.

Köln is the first of the second batch of corvettes, which is also referred to as Braunschweig-class, after the lead ship from the first batch. The first five ships entered service between 2008 and 2013.

In 2017, a contract worth €2.4 billion for the construction of the new corvettes has been awarded to the ARGE K130 consortium, composed of Lürssen Werft (now NVL Group), ThyssenKrupp Marine Systems and German Naval Yards Kiel.

Led by NVL Group as the prime contractor, the shipbuilding team is to deliver the ships by 2025.

German maritime technology firm Atlas Elektronik and Thales Deutschland have been also contracted to deliver combat systems for the five new K130 corvettes. In addition to combat systems, the contract also covered setting up and delivering a test and training center in Wilhelmshaven.

The German Navy has said that it will replace its 3 Type 124 anti-air warfare frigates with 6 ships of the new Type 127 class, which will likely be based around America's Aegis Combat System in order to defeat ballistic missile threats. Responding to the requirements, German shipyards have pitched their first design proposals – and they're truly massive: The new frigate could be up to 220 m (722 ft) in length and displace some 12,000 tons. Her main armaments would consist of about 80 VLS cells, 16 anti-ship missiles and a 127/64 main gun. (Source, German, Paywall)

In further news, Germany also intends to buy six (not four) Type 126 frigates, now wholly configured for anti-submarine warfare. One lightly armed Type 125 frigate and up to four Type 130 corvettes will be retired early due to the new threat environment, the remaining modernised corvettes to be complemented by 18 new fast attack craft. Also also, the fleet's existing 6 Type 212 A air-independent attack submarines will be replaced with 6-9 boats of the larger Type 212 CD class as well as 6 large unmanned underwater vehicles.

Realmente 16 VLS parece pouco.
