Ex-Russian Army Chief Vladimir Chirkin gets five years for corruption charges

A military court in Moscow sentenced the former top commander of Russia's land forces, General Vladimir Chirkin, to five years in jail for bribe taking.  

Chikin was found guilty of receiving a 450,000 rouble bribe in 2008 to arrange an apartment for a retired military officer, Interfax and Tass reported. Chirkin has served as commander in chief for the Russian Army's Ground  Forces.

Chirkin is one of the most senior Russian military officers to have been convicted for corruption. Chirkin had been a commander in Russia's wars in Chechnya and directed the Victory Day parade on the Red Square in 2013. (...)

The Russian Ministry of Defence  (MoD) has postponed a major expansion of the Russian Airborne Troops  (VVD),, according to a recent report in the Russia newspaper  Izvestia (...)

The newspaper's MoD sources claimed that the military reversed course on the VVD's enlargement so that the airborne troops can focus on rearmament. The sources reported that the MoD was delaying any large increase in the size of the VVD until 2020 or later.

In late-2015 it was announced that the VDV would be increased in strength from its current 45,000 personnel to approximately 60,000. (...)

While the world has been focused on Russia’s air campaign in Syria, Moscow continues its military modernization closer to home. The Kremlin is planning on modernizing one hundred and fifty additional Soviet-era T-72B main battle tanks to the T-72B3M standard. The upgraded vehicles would offer performance comparable to the much more modern T-90, but for a fraction of the price.
