MTU Develops New Control Unit for Eurofighter Engine

(Source: MTU Aero Engines; issued Dec. 10, 2004)

MUNICH, Germany --- The Eurofighter's EJ200 engine is the most advanced in its class worldwide, providing the combat aircraft with breathtaking agility.

Starting with Tranche 2, the powerplant comes with a new control system. That system is being developed, under the roof of the Eurojet engine consortium, by MTU Aero Engines in partnership with German, Spanish and British hardware suppliers and with Rolls-Royce Bristol, who provides the software. With this activity, Germany's leading engine manufacturer has landed yet another development contract.

The EJ200's digital engine control unit (DECU) is being recreated as a digital engine control and monitoring unit (DECMU). "The new system is the finest money can buy. It again testifies to the high level of expertise we bring to this area," says Franz Buckl, who heads the testing and control effort at MTU.

The DECMU's unique feature is that it marries control and monitoring functions in a single unit. Before, it used to take two different systems to achieve the same purpose. The new unit is more flexible and cost-effective than the two predecessor systems taken together, although size and reliability remain the same. But chalk up one more for the DECMU: it will readily accommodate foreseeable engine modifications including thrust vectoring, if adopted. Also, existing engines can optionally be retrofitted with it at relatively modest effort.

MTU is known for its expertise in engine control and monitoring systems, having multiply demonstrated its savvy on, for instance, the military RB199 engine powering the Tornado and the MTR390 for the Tiger helicopter. On the TP400-D6 for the emerging A400M military transport, too, the Munich-headquartered company shares engine control responsibility with its French partner Snecma Moteurs.

MTU Aero Engines is Germany's leading engine manufacturer and ranks among the major global players in the business. It operates affiliates across the globe. In fiscal 2003, it had a workforce of some 8,000 people and 1.9 billion euros in sales. MTU is the world's largest independent provider of commercial engine services. In the miltary arena, it is the German industrial lead company for practically all engines flown by the country's military.

Type Acceptance for Series Production Single-seat Aircraft

(Source: Eurofighter GmbH; issued Dec. 14, 2004)

HALLBERGMOOS, Germany --- Eurofighter GmbH announced the signature with NETMA, on Monday 13 December 2004, of the Type Acceptance agreement for the Eurofighter Typhoon Batch 2 aircraft. This signature will allow the delivery of the first series production single-seat Eurofighter Typhoons to the four Partner Nations of Germany, Italy, Spain and the United Kingdom.

The Type Acceptance of Batch 2 aircraft sees a marked improvement in the functionality of Eurofighter Typhoon. For the first time, the DASS (Defensive Aids Sub-System) and the MIDS data link (Multiple Information Distribution System) have been cleared for flight operation.

Following the commencement of training and conversion with twin-seat Eurofighter Typhoons at the start of this year, the partner air forces will now be able to comprehensively test these, and more, new functionalities of the aircraft in the ongoing national operational evaluation phase.

Air-to-Air refuelling and external fuel tank carriage are now cleared for operation, as is the simultaneous launch of the medium-range AMRAAM air-to-air missile.

To reduce pilot’s workload, the Direct Voice Input feature (DVI) has been introduced enabling the pilot to “speak to the aircraft”, further emphasising the human-machine interface capability of Eurofighter Typhoon.

Aloysius Rauen, CEO Eurofighter GmbH, stated: “With these new features, and the fact that the customer will now receive the single-seat variant, the partner air forces will be able to continue their initial flying operations under even more realistic conditions. With the introduction of DASS and MIDS, Eurofighter takes a further step in the overall transformation process of the air forces towards more integrated air operations in a network centric environment.”

The Eurofighter partner nations plan to take delivery of 620 aircraft: 180 for Germany, 121 for Italy, 87 for Spain and 232 for the United Kingdom. An additional export order of 18 Eurofighter Typhoon has been agreed with the Government of Austria. Eurofighter has also been downselected in Singapore in a competition for a Future Fighter.

The Royal Norwegian Ministry of Defense has agreed an industrial participation programme with Eurofighter GmbH for the future enhancement of the weapon system. Eurofighter Typhoon has also been selected by Greece to meet its respective requirements for a future fighter.

Following Type Acceptance on 30 June, 2003, Series Production Aircraft have now been delivered to each of the four nation air forces and entry into service training is proceeding. This follows first flights of three twin-seat Instrumented Production Aircraft (IPA) in April 2002, and first flight of a single-seat Instrumented Production Aircraft (IPA4) on 26 February 2004.

RAF: Typhoon Tranche Two Contract

(Source: House of Lords Hansard transcript for Dec. 15, 2004)

Written Ministerial Statement by the Secretary of State for Defence, Mr. Geoffrey Hoon:

“I am delighted to announce that the contracts for the second tranche of Typhoon multi-role combat aircraft have now been signed by the general manager of the NATO Eurofighter and Tornado Management Agency, on behalf of the four partner nations, and by the Chief Executives of the project's co-ordinating industrial consortia, Eurofighter GmbH and Eurojet Turbo GmbH.

“This is excellent news for both the Royal Air Force and for United Kingdom industry and represents the achievement of another major milestone for the Typhoon project.

“This order builds upon the success of the introduction into service of Tranche One Typhoon aircraft, which are demonstrating outstanding performance in operation with the RAF. The Tranche Two contracts will provide the RAF with an additional 89 aircraft at a value in cash terms of around £4.3 billion.

“The contracts form part of what is thought to be the largest defence order ever placed in Europe, reflecting the successful and continuing co-operation between the four partner nations and European industry.

“Typhoon will be an outstandingly capable, state-of-the-art aircraft which will form a cornerstone of the RAF's future capability. The aircraft will have the flexibility to contribute across a wide range of operations delivering air superiority and precision ground attack capabilities.

“The order will provide major benefits across the United Kingdom and, at the peak of manufacture, industry expects it to create or sustain some 16,000 jobs with defence manufacturers, many in areas of high-technology, and a significant number in supporting industries across the economy more widely.

“Typhoon will be a world-beating aircraft and this major investment will provide the RAF with the capability to respond to the challenges and threats we face now and in the future.”

Vamos começar a pensar no F35 JSF, porque o EF2000 ja esta passado de moda,além do mais podiamos encomendar 7 ou 8 na versão VSTOL para operar em terrenos sem infraestruturas ou mesmo no LPD.

Alenia Aeronautica: First Flight of the Single-Seat Eurofighter Typhoon for the Italian Air Force

(Source: Alenia Aeronautica; issued Dec. 20, 2004)

The first single-seat Eurofighter Typhoon (IS002) to be delivered to the Italian Air Force has made its first flight from the air-field of Alenia Aeronautica’s plant near Caselle airport (Turin).

The Typhoon, piloted by the chief test pilot of Alenia Aeronautica’s defence aircraft, Commander Maurizio Cheli, has flown for 65 minutes (take-off at 12.54 p.m., landing at 1.59 p.m.) successfully completing the planned tests.

This flight is a further and important step in the aircraft’s production phase, after the acquisition, last December 14th, of the second production contract (Tranche2) for a further 236 units (46 of which for the Italian Air Force).

The single-seat Eurofighter IS002 is the seventh unit of those to be delivered to the Italian Air Force and is part of the first contract, “Tranche 1”, envisaging 148 units, of which 29 for Italy.

In Italy, six twin-seats Typhoons have been delivered (one to Cameri Base near Novara and five to Grosseto Base) to the Italian Air Force.

The IS002 first flight follows the type acceptance for series production single-seat aircraft, achieved last December 13th, granted by the four nations participating in the programme (Germany, Italy, Spain, United Kingdom) and already ratified by the National Certification Authority of the Italian Defence Ministry (ARMAEREO).

Pilots and technicians of both Alenia Aeronautica and Italian Air Force have expressed full satisfaction: the Eurofighter IS002, once completed test and acceptance activities will join the other six twin-seats Eurofighters already in service within the Italian Air Force.

The Eurofighter Typhoon is the result of a quadrilateral collaboration of Governments and industries (Germany, United Kingdom, Italy and Spain) for the manufacturing of an advanced swing-role combat aircraft.

Alenia Aeronautica participates in the Typhoon production programme, together with BAE Systems (UK), and EADS (Germany and Spain). The Italian company holds a share of 19,5% and is responsible for the left wing production, the design and production of the rear fuselage together with BAE Systems, of the design and integration of some on-board systems such as armament and navigation, and also of all the propulsion systems’ integration. The Italian company is also responsible for the final assembly and flight tests of all the aircraft for the Italian Air Force and for those for the foreign countries of its competence.

In addition to the partner countries, the Eurofighter has already been ordered (June 2003) by the Austrian Air Force, (18 units) and deliveries are envisaged starting 2008.

The Typhoon has also been down-selected by Singapore in a competition for a Future Fighter.

Saudos.

Eurofighter is Fully Mission Capable

(Source: Eurofighter GmbH; issued Jan. 24, 2005)

HALLBERGMOOS, Germany --- This week’s edition of the German news magazine “Der Spiegel” claims that the German Air Force Eurofighters have only limited combat readiness and that development costs appear to be higher than expected. On Saturday, the German Ministry of Defence rejected this story and confirmed that all development tasks were running according to plan.

Regarding the alleged limited mission capability, Eurofighter GmbH has repeatedly emphasized, and reiterates again, that the performance standards of Eurofighter are implemented and released in stages. This is a common process and is applied by the international aerospace industry worldwide.

Contrary to Spiegel’s reporting the Development Aircraft have already proven Eurofighter’s capabilities including gun firing, carriage of external fuel tanks and firing of air-to-air missiles. Series production aircraft have all of these capabilities, but release of relevant clearance to service pilots is a progressive, staged approach.

The electronic self-defence system DASS will also be introduced in stages and is to be fully implemented by December 2006. Type acceptance for the first aircraft now being delivered with the initial stage of DASS clearance was granted by the NATO-Eurofighter Agency in December 2004 and the first individual aircraft to this standard entered service with the Spanish Air Force before the end of last year.

The German Air Force has received eight aircraft thus far. As was planned, one aircraft is used exclusively for training of maintenance crews, while the remaining aircraft are currently being operated in an evaluation programme looking at operational issues such as tactics and logistics. These aircraft and their service release will gradually be upgraded to the full production standard. This is a very common strategy at this early stage of their in-service life.

Based on these facts, the European aerospace industry representing 100, 000 jobs involved in the Eurofighter programme and a major plank of national defense strategy in five European nations can only challenge the motivation and objective “Der Spiegel” pursues with this ‘information policy’.
