Forest Brothers - Fight for the Baltics
After the Second World War, partisans from across the Baltics disappeared into the forests to wage Europe's bloodiest guerrilla war against the occupying Soviet forces.

This short docu drama includes interviews with former partisan fighters and those who supported them and dramatic battle scene recreations and interviews with modern-day Special Forces of Lithuania, the direct descendants of the Forest Brothers.

In July 1942, one year after Hitler invaded the Soviet Union, the Germans launched a great offensive in Southern Russia. Their goal was the Soviet Oil fields of the Caucasus. On July 25, 1942, German troops captured Rostov-on-Don, laying claim to the Caucasus region of the southern Soviet Union and the oil fields beyond.

However, German troops failed to break through the Caucasus, yet successfully made it to Crimea after a six month defense operation on the Taman Peninsula.

The battle ended on Oct. 9, 1943. The German 17th army was effectively destroyed by the Soviets. More than 70,000 German soldiers were killed or captured. Soviets casualties totaled about 18,000 men. The Wehrmacht suffered a series of devastating defeats on the Eastern front.

The battle of the Caucasus coincided with the battles of Stalingrad and Kursk, and played an important role in bringing about a radical change in the course of the WWII.

Out of all the battles that took place during WWII, there are some that have had a deep impact on both sides. The Battle of Taranto is no exception!

During the night of 11th and 12th November 1940, a battle began in the waters of Taranto in Italy. The Royal Navy of England under the leadership of Admiral Andrew Cunningham launched a naval attack on the Italian naval forces fighting under the leadership of Admiral Inigo Campioni.

This was the first ship attack to be conducted in the naval history. Despite the shallow depth of water, the Regia Marina battle fleet in Taranto was hit using aerial torpedoes.

P51 Gun Camera Footage

Near the end of World War 2, in Europe. U.S. gun camera footage of an American fighter firing at a German Messerschmitt Me 262 jet fighter. Several hits are seen on the wings and then on the tail of the Me 262, which appears to accelerate, while emitting smoke. It is then seen with its right engine smoking heavily. It is again attacked and apparently shot down. Another scene shows attack against a German fighter

The South African Air Force discovered Auschwitz extermination camp
1
Little known historic fact but it was a South African Air Force reconnaissance aircraft which first discovered and then photographed the Auschwitz-Birkenau extermination camp. This is one of the aerial photos.

Mosquito XVI aircraft of No. 60 Squadron South African Air Force operating from Foggia Airfield Complex, Southern Italy in 1944, carried out detailed large-scale photographic surveys of German held areas, eventually ranging over the Alps and deep into Germany and German occupied territory.

During one of these missions in Spring 1944, a SAAF 60 Squadron plane piloted by Lt. C.H.H Barry and his navigator Lt. I McIntyre photographed Auschwitz when they went to photograph the rubber refinery plant next to the camp. They were reconnoitring the plant which was earmarked for bombing by the USAAF (USA Air Force).

When the photos of the complex next to the plant were analyzed, they found rows of people lining up in the camp. The photos also showed chimneys and all the other characteristics of a camp for prisoners. This, with other intelligence, brought them to the conclusions that extermination camps existed.

Italy’s part in WWII is usually remembered as one of failure and embarrassment. Italian forces were repeatedly rescued from defeat by their German allies. However, the Italians had some successes, notably their raid on Alexandria Harbor in December 1941.

The SLC

Free movement in the Mediterranean was vital to any Italian war effort. British naval supremacy meant it was hard to achieve and also ensured safe supplies for British forces in the region. As war approached in the mid-1930s, Italian specialists looked for ways to counter British naval might.

Looking back to the tactics of WWI they trained small teams of men to enter harbors and attack ships there covertly. They used the siluro a lenta corsa (SLC). They were slow-running torpedoes with detachable warheads which had two pilots and an effective range of 15 miles. While working best at surface level, they could function while entirely submerged. Difficult to use and prone to breaking down, they were known by their operators as “pigs.”
