Eurofighter Programme - Supporting Belgian Jobs and Industry
(Source: Eurofighter Typhoon; issued Dec 07, 2017)

The European consortium promoting Eurofighter has revealed further details of its industrial offer to Belgium as part of the ongoing bid to replace the Belgian air force’s F-16 aircraft.

--Potential creation of more than 1,800 new jobs in Belgium
--Builds on 40,000 jobs currently sustained across the Belgian supply chain and wider economy by the Eurofighter partners
--Positions Belgian industry as a key player in the future European defence and aerospace sector through participation in the Eurofighter programme.

Anthony Gregory, Campaign Director for Belgium at BAE Systems, said: “Eurofighter is designed, manufactured and assembled in Europe, with Belgian industry already an established part of the supply chain. Our proposal ensures that every Euro invested by Belgium on Eurofighter would help sustain more than 100,000 direct jobs across the continent, including in Belgium.

“Our Eurofighter proposal offers much more than sustainment and growth of Belgium’s aerospace and defence sectors. It offers an opportunity for Belgium to have a voice and play an active role in the future development of Eurofighter and, through this, opportunities in any next generation combat aircraft programme in Europe, with the largest defence and aerospace companies in Europe.”

Peter Maute, Sales Director for Eurofighter said: “Every Euro spent on Eurofighter supports high technology aerospace and defence industrial capabilities and jobs across Europe and the EU. The industrial proposals being put forward as part of the Eurofighter offer seek to invest jointly in the future technologies and capabilities required to maintain and grow competitive market positions, generating long term sustainable opportunities for Belgium across the aerospace and defence manufacturing sectors. They also seek to provide Belgium with an influence over the future of the product and programme.”

These additional details follow the signing of an agreement to support the establishment of two National Innovation Centres in Belgium, which took place on October 26. The agreement commits Eurofighter partner companies from Spain, Germany, Italy and the UK to support the centres in the event of a successful Eurofighter bid.

The Eurofighter proposal expects to deliver on these commitments by:

-- offering a place in Europe’s largest ever defence programme, where Belgium will be part of defining the future direction of capability. Investment is expected through the life of the programme including but not limited to support, electronic warfare, mission planning and flight training;

-- an investment in research and development, ensuring that Belgium has the opportunity to continually refine its defence and aerospace manufacturing sector capabilities with the latest materials and technologies for the future. This will enable it to work as a strengthened force within the European technological industrial base to meet the challenges of participating in the next generation of military platforms; and

-- providing Belgian industry the means to sustain and build on existing highly skilled jobs. The proposal specifically targets high value materials and manufacturing research and development that, through collaborative funding, will enhance the global prospects of aerospace companies and those in adjacent sectors. Based on previous experience, these initiatives are expected to return between 15-20% on every Euro spent in the high-value sectors of the economy.

Belgium Allocates €258M to Euro Tanker Fleet

(Source: Belga news service; published Dec. 23, 2017)

(Published in French and Dutch; unofficial translation by Defense-Aerospace.com)

The Council of Ministers decided Friday (Dec. 22) to allocate 258 million euros to the Belgian participation in a fleet of European tankers, an amount that corresponds to the value of an aircraft Airbus A330 MRTT (Multi Role Tanker Transport), the Ministry of Defense has announced.

The aircraft will be configured for in-flight refueling missions of all current and future fighter jets.

This Belgian decision will therefore increase from 7 to 8 aircraft the European fleet being prepared for the Multinational Multi Role Tanker Transport (MMF) program for the benefit of the European Union and NATO, and to compensate for one of the main shortcomings of European armies.

Germany, Norway, the Netherlands and Luxembourg have already placed a firm order for seven Airbus A330-200 MRTTs, built by Airbus Defense and Space (ADS), a subsidiary of the European group Airbus.

The eight tankers are acquired and operated according to the European principle of "pooling and sharing", said the Minister of Defense, Steven Vandeput (N-VA), in a statement.

The MMF program will be funded by five countries, which will have exclusive exploitation rights for these NATO-owned aircraft, according to a pooling agreement.

The aircraft will be configured for in-flight refueling missions of all current and future fighter jets (US F-35 Lightning II, French Rafale and European Eurofighter), passenger and freight transport, and medical evacuation.

The delivery of the first seven aircraft is expected between 2020 and 2022, according to Airbus.

But Belgium should be able to resort quickly - before the delivery of the 8th aircraft, which should be operational by 2025, according to Mr Vandeput – to the A330 MRTT "pool" for missions to refuel its F-16 or for medical evacuation, according to Mr. Vandeput's entourage.

The MMF program was initiated by the European Defense Agency (EDA) in 2012. The European Organization for Co-operation in Armaments (OCCAR) manages the acquisition phase of the MMF as the executing agency of the contract for NSPA, a NATO agency. At the end of this phase, NSPA will be responsible for the complete management of the fleet life-cycle.

At least some of these aircraft will be registered in the Netherlands and based in Eindhoven (southern Netherlands) to replace the current KDC-10 tankers of the Dutch air force, with an advanced base in Cologne (Germany). Costs and personnel will be allocated according to the number of flying hours required by each country, under the supervision of the European Tactical Transport Command (EATC, based in Eindhoven),

The "strategic vision" for the Belgian army by 2030 endorsed in June 2016 by the Michel government plans to invest in such a device to the tune of 300 million euros in the period 2024-2027.

Proven in combat, the A330 MRTT is equipped with an Airbus Aerial Refueling Boom System (ARBS), and two underwater tube / basket refueling pods. Both systems are used to refuel in flight all types of aircraft (combat or transport) in service in the West.

According to the Defense, this type of aircraft totals 56 firm orders by eight countries. France has ordered nine copies - out of a total need expressed of twelve aircraft - with a first delivery scheduled for 2018. This model has also been selected by India and Qatar.

A Bélgica vai vender a sua frota de aviões de transporte VIP e vai antes contratar uma empresa civil: Defensie verkoopt commerciële vloot en zoekt naar dienstencontract.

Mecânico destrói um F-16 por acidente
https://tvi24.iol.pt/internacional/forca-aerea/mecanico-destroi-um-f-16-por-acidente

Raphael

Belgium Considers Dart-550 Basic Trainer

A Diamond test pilot and Colonel Goossens of the Belgian Air Force pose with the Dart-550 demonstrator after a flight from Wiener Neustadt. (Photo: Diamond Aircraft)

In late October Belgium sent a delegation of three personnel to the Wiener Neustadt headquarters of Austria’s Diamond Aircraft. There they received a thorough introduction to the Dart-550 tandem two-seater, which is one of a number of aircraft being considered for a new air force basic trainer requirement.

The trio—from the Belgian Air Force (BAF) and the Directorate of Material Resources—not only examined the aircraft and received a technical briefing but also learned about the ground-based training system and support package that is offered by Diamond. A demonstration flight was also undertaken.

Colonel Aviator Patrick “Goose” Goossens, the former head of training for the BAF and now head of the future pilot training workgroup, flew the aircraft. According to Diamond, he was pleased with the Dart-550’s stability and ease of handling.

“Belgium is at this stage keen to keep the competition for the new basic training aircraft as open as possible,” he said. “This visit, the flight, and the constructive exchange of information confirmed that the Dart-550 earns its place in that competition.”

“We are pleased that the Belgian Air Force is considering the Dart-550 as an option for their new Basic Training Aircraft, which is going to educate future pilots of the air force,” said Mario Spiegel, sales manager for the Dart. “We are glad to see that the Dart is already being considered for many programs all over the world, which proves once again that the Dart is right at the sweet spot of the future basic training requirements for military pilots.”

The Dart-550 is an outgrowth of the Dart-450, which made its first flight in May 2016. Whereas the 450 is powered by an Ivchenko Progress/Motor Sich AI-450S turboprop rated at 495 shp, the Dart-550 introduces a 550-shp General Electric H75-100 turboprop. The 2,400-kg mtow Dart-550 has an endurance of up to eight hours and is fitted with Garmin G3000 avionics and Martin-Baker Mk 16 ejection seats. It first took to the air on May 24, 2018, and was exhibited at that year's Farnborough air show.

Belgium has been operating the SIAI-Marchetti SF-260 piston-engined basic trainer since 1969, when 36 SF-260Ms were bought. They were augmented by a batch of nine SF-260Ds in the early 1990s. The survivors fly with 5 and 9 Squadrons of the Competence Center-Air at Beauvechain. Students selected for fast-jet training progress to the Alpha Jet E, with training undertaken in France.

Belgium’s first Atlas caps A400M deliveries for year
22 December 2020

Belgium’s first A400M Atlas tactical transport has arrived at the nation’s Melsbroek air base, following its acceptance and transfer from Airbus Defence & Space’s San Pablo final assembly site in Seville, Spain, on 22 December.

Source: Airbus Defence & Space Brussels’ lead A400M left Seville, Spain, on 22 December

“With the delivery of this aircraft all launch customers are now equipped with the A400M,” notes Airbus Defence & Space head of military aircraft Alberto Gutierrez.
“Despite challenges due to Covid-19, our teams have achieved all 10 aircraft deliveries scheduled this year, bringing the global [A400M] fleet in operation to 98 aircraft,” Gutierrez says.
The type’s other users are France, Germany, Luxembourg, Malaysia, Spain, Turkey and the UK.
Airbus says it will deliver Brussels’ second of an eventual seven A400Ms in early 2021. Its Air Component will operate the type as a joint unit with Luxembourg, which has already received a lone example of the airlifter.

Belgium, Luxembourg receive third A400M

Belgium has received into service its second Airbus Defence and Space (DS) A400M Atlas transport aircraft, bringing the number it now operates as a joint unit with Luxembourg to three.

To date, the BNU has received three A400Ms into Melsbroek. The BAC’s 15th Air Transport Wing now operates two Belgian and one Luxembourg A400Ms for the BNU, with four more Belgian aircraft to be delivered. (Belgian Air Component)

Aircraft CT-03 arrived at Melsbroek, the military area of Brussels airport, on 4 March. The Belgian Air Component (BAC) will operate a total of seven A400Ms, including one purchased by Luxembourg.

The BAC’s 15th Air Transport Wing will field the fleet under the auspices of the joint Belgian-Luxembourg Bi-National Unit (BNU). These aircraft will be made available to the European Air Transport Command and through that the European Rapid Reaction Force.

As previously reported by Janes, the remaining six A400Ms will be delivered to the BAC by 2023, with full operating capability for the BNU slated for the end of 2024.

Besides receiving seven aircraft of its own, Belgium is also an industrial contributor to the A400M programme, responsible for manufacturing detailed machined wing elements and flight-control surfaces.

Set to replace the BAC’s ageing Lockheed Martin C-130H Hercules, the A400M can carry strategic payloads over strategic distances, while being able to deliver them in a tactical fashion to where they are needed. Figures released by Airbus DS show that with a 20-tonne payload, the A400M can fly an unrefuelled 3,400 n miles at 37,000 ft and at near-airliner speeds of Mach 0.72.
