After more than three years, the A-10 Thunderbolt II arrived in Afghanistan, landing at Kandahar Airfield on Jan. 19, U.S. Air Forces Central Command announced Tuesday.

The coveted close-air support platform — commonly called the “Warthog” — is back downrange to support U.S. advisers who are beginning to embed with Afghan forces closer to the front lines.

As U.S. advisers move closer to the front lines in support of our Afghan partners, this additional airpower will give them the decisive advantage necessary to advance with confidence,” said Lt. Gen. Jeffrey Harrigian, commander of U.S. Air Forces Central Command, in a press release.

A task force of roughly 300 Marines deployed to Afghanistan’s volatile Helmand province will be among the forward-deployed advisers benefiting from the A-10’s arrival.

The new task force is intended to advise Afghan forces at the kandak, or battalion, level. Advise-and-assists missions were previously limited to the brigade level and above, officials said.

Also deploying this spring to Afghanistan is the Army’s 1st Security Force Assistance Brigade, a new and specially trained unit of military advisers.

Did you know the USAF is looking to retire its B-1B and B-2A fleets ahead of schedule? The Air Force wants to retire the two bombers by 2036 - initially they were expected to remain in service till 2058. The decision makers have also chosen to retain the B-52 till 2050, and plan to upgrade the BUFFs at a cost of $22 billion. — com The Mighty B-52 Stratofortress, B-2 Spirit Stealth Bomber, United States Air Force e B-1 Lancer.

The US Air Force has released the name of the Thunderbird pilot killed in yesterday’s F-16 crash in Nevada. Thunderbird #4, Major Stephen Del Bagno, was killed in the crash that occurred while the team was practicing their airshow routine near Creech AFB. He was in his first of two seasons with the team, which is based at nearby Nellis AFB in Las Vegas. He had over 3,500 flight hours in both civilian and Air Force aircraft.

Here is Maj. Del Bagno’s full bio from the Thunderbirds’ website:
Maj. Stephen Del Bagno is the Slot Pilot for the U.S. Air Force Air Demonstration Squadron, flying the No. 4 jet. He is a 2005 graduate of Utah Valley State University, and commissioned from Officer Training School, Maxwell AFB, Ala. in 2007. Before joining the Air Force, Del Bagno was a civilian flight instructor, corporate pilot, skywriter, and a banner tow pilot. He enjoys snowboarding, water sports and spending time with family and friends. Prior to joining the Thunderbirds, Del Bagno served as an F-35A Evaluator Pilot and Chief of Standardization and Evaluation, 58th Fighter Squadron, Eglin AFB, Fla. He has logged more than 3,500 total flight hours in over 30 different aircraft, with 1,400 hours as an Air Force pilot. Del Bagno is in his first season with the team and hails from Valencia, Calif.

“We are mourning the loss of Major Del Bagno,” said Brig. Gen. Jeannie Leavitt, 57th Wing Commander. “He was an integral part of our team and our hearts are heavy with his loss. We ask everyone to provide his family and friends the space to heal during this difficult time.”

Our thoughts are with Maj. Del Bagno’s family and teammates.

Did you know that the North American XB-70 Valkyrie was the largest, fastest bomber ever built? Here’s how the Valkyrie compares with the current inventory of American bombers.

The U.S. Air Force’s Close Air Support Fly-Off Is a Farce
F-35 versus A-10 fly-off designed to mislead

The F-35 Joint Strike Fighter is finally going up against the battle-proven A-10 close-air-support attack plane for the long-promised fly-off. The unpublicized tests began on July 5, 2018 and will conclude on July 12, according to a copy of the testing schedule reviewed by the Center for Defense Information at the Project On Government Oversight.

But the tests, as designed, are unlikely to reveal anything of real value about the F-35’s ability to support ground troops in realistic combat situations—which the F-35, as the presumptive replacement for the A-10, must be able to demonstrate.

A close air support test should involve large numbers of ground troops in a highly fluid combat simulation in varied terrain, across many days. It should test the pilot’s ability to spot targets from the air in a chaotic and ever-changing situation. The test should also include a means of testing the program’s ability to fly several sorties a day, because combat doesn’t pause to wait for airplanes to become available.

FARNBOROUGH, England -- There may be a new-old fighter jet on the horizon for the U.S. Air Force.

DefenseOne reports that Boeing Co. is pitching a new version of the F-15 Eagle as the service defines its inventory mix of fourth- and fifth-generation aircraft.

Known as F-15X, the fighter would be equipped with better avionics and radars and would carry more than two dozen air-to-air missiles, DefenseOne said, citing unnamed officials with knowledge of the plans.

The strategy would mimic what Boeing did with its Block III F/A-18 Super Hornet: taking an old concept, but boosting the jet fleets to be more potent in current and future missions with a larger variety of weapons, extended range, advanced targeting and sensor systems, and better fuel efficiency, among other enhancements.

"We see the marketplace expanding internationally," Gene Cunningham, vice president at Boeing for Global Sales for Defense, Space & Security, told reporters at the Royal International Air Tattoo on Friday. "And it's creating opportunities then to go back and talk to the U.S. Air Force about what might be future upgrades or even potentially future acquisitions of the F-15 aircraft."

Mystery solved!

In October, Intercepts wrote about the F-117 Nighthawk and how recent photos had shown the stealth jet flying from Tonopah Test Range in Nevada — despite the plane having been retired in 2008.

Given the secretive history of the Nighthawk, speculation immediately arose as to what the jets could be doing. General consensus was that the jet was doing testing, although on what and for what purpose was up in the air.

But now, through hard work and deep, investigative reporting (read: we asked the Air Force), Intercepts can now reveal what the F-117 is doing post-retirement:

Being retired.

Here’s the deal, according to the Air Force. When the Nighthawk was retired, it was mandated that the jet be kept in “Type 1000” storage. Frequent Intercepts readers may recall discussion earlier this year about putting the A-10 into Type 1000 storage, and while that plan died on the vine, it did give us this handy definition of what it means:

Aircraft in Type 1000 storage are to be maintained until recalled to active service, should the need arise. Type 1000 aircraft are termed inviolate; meaning they have a high potential to return to flying status and no parts may be removed from them. These aircraft are ‘re-preserved’ every four years.

Also of note, it can take ’30-120 days depending upon how long the aircraft has been in Type 1000 storage for it to become flyable again,’ according to [an Air Force] spokesperson.
