Airbus SAS has admitted that a software problem caused its A400M transport plane to crash in an accident that killed four people last month.
Germany’s Handelsblatt newspaper reports the software in question was installed incorrectly, and that caused the A400M’s engines to stall shortly before the crash. However, the software itself was free from glitches.
Marwan Lahoud, Airbus’ chief strategy officer, said in an interview that the company believes there is no problem with the airplane itself. “The black boxes attest … that there are no structural defects, but we have a serious quality problem in the final assembly,” Lahoud said.
In a statement released ahead of publication, Handelsblatt wrote that the units which control the engines of the turboprop A400M military cargo and troop transport were poorly installed during final assembly, which could have led to the engines malfunctioning and the plane crashing.
But Airbus’s defense and space division told AFP that it was too early to draw any conclusions.
“We will need the full results of the investigation in order to have the full picture, so as long as there is no further communications from (the investigating authority) CITAAM it is too early to draw any conclusions from the accident,” it said in a statement.
The division added that “like all accidents, it will certainly be a combination of issues and not one single cause”.
It also said other A400M aircraft in service have already been subject to checks and are “100 percent protected from this failure”.
The May 9 accident occured shortly after aircraft MSN23 takeoff from San Pablo Airport in Seville, Spain, on its maiden flight. The plane crash landed, resulting in the deaths of four Airbus Defense and Space personnel. Two of the six people on board the plane, a mechanic and an engineer, survived the crash and were sent to a hospital in critical condition. Airbus has already told A400M operators – Germany, Britain, Turkey and France – to check the planes’ Engine Control Unit.
Last week, Tom Enders, CEO of Airbus, complained that Spanish authorities were witholding the black box data, which meant it couldn’t fully analyze what caused the crash.
Now, with the results in, Airbus officials will at least be relieved the plane’s design is not at fault. Nevertheless, they will need to carry out stringent checks to ensure that future software installs don’t go wrong.
E continuam a sacudir a "água do capote"...

Airbus resumes A400M customer deliveries

Citar
Airbus Defence and Space (DS) has resumed deliveries of the A400M Atlas airlifter following the lifting of a grounding order that had been in place since the fatal crash of aircraft MSN023 in May.

The first production-standard aircraft to leave the Seville final assembly line (FAL), since the grounding was enacted by the Spanish authorities on 9 May, was delivered to the French Air Force on the same day that the suspension of flight was lifted on 19 June. This aircraft, MSN019, is the seventh to be delivered to France and the 13th to be delivered in all.

Airbus DS has not released a timeline for further deliveries, but a source previously told IHS Jane's that in addition to MSN019 for France, the FAL has also completed the build of four aircraft for the United Kingdom. These will now undergo pre-delivery checks and trials before being flown to Royal Air Force (RAF) Brize Norton in Oxfordshire.

While the company has said that it still intends to hand over between 13 and 17 of the aircraft this year, it is not clear if the delivery order will need to be re-jigged to reflect the loss of MSN023, which was destined for Turkey.

With the Spanish Directorate General of Armament and Material grounding now lifted, the entire fleet of three company-owned testbeds, four production-standard platforms, and 13 operational aircraft is cleared to fly. Of those customers that have already received aircraft, France maintained the flying status of its aircraft throughout, while Germany, Malaysia, Turkey, and the UK temporarily suspended flights of their aircraft. The UK has now resumed flying, while an official announcement pertaining to the other operators is still awaited.

The Spanish authorities that are leading the investigation into the fatal crash of MSN023 have yet to officially comment, but Airbus DS has issued two notices to operators based on its own analysis. These notices are related to the A400M's four EuroProp International TP400-D6 engines, three of which malfunctioned on the ill-fated flight that claimed the lives of four of the six crew members.

(2015/06/22) Airbus: A400M deliveries restart

RAF: progress on Airbus A400M
Citação de: "AIRheads FLY"
The Royal Air Force (RAF) took delivery of its third Airbus A400M tactical transport aircraft on 5 July, the UK Ministry of Defence reports. The aircraft was flown from Sevilla in Spain to its new home in Brize Norton, UK. The aircraft is one of the first to be delivered by Airbus since the fatal A400M crash in May.

In a press release, the ministry states that RAF crews have clocked 405 flying hours on the A400M – named Atlas in RAF-service – so far. The British are now developing the use of the aircraft whilst continuing to grow the experience of the aircrew instructors. The first aircraft carried out its first operational mission to Cyprus in March.

(15 de Setembro de 2015) RAF A400M Atlas fleet ready for service
Citação de: "AIRheads FLY"
The Royal Air Force (RAF) Airbus A400M fleet is ready for worldwide tasks, the UK Ministry of Defence announced on Tuesday 15 September. This In-Service Date (ISD) marks a milestone for the A400M, the prestigious Airbus transport aircraft that seemed in trouble only four months ago.

Four RAF A400M Atlas aircraft now operate from Brize Norton airbase near Oxford, with a further three now undergo final work before being ready for service.  Together, these aircraft are now ready for operations anywhere.

“Those flying the aircraft are gugely impressed with its capability”, UK Defence Minister Philip Dunne stated. That’s a major boost for the program, that suffered a distaster in May with the fatal crash of an A400M during a test flight in Seville, Spain.

The British enthusiasm contrasts with German reservation. Germany received its first A400M last year and since reported a lot of faults and delays with the introduction into service. The Germans still operate only one aircraft.

In the UK, a total of 22 A400M Atlas aircraft are to replace Lockheed Martin C-130J Hercules transporters at a cost of 160 billion GBP.

RMAF’s Atlas In Service Support
(3 de Novembro de 2015)
Citação de: Malaysian Defence
UNDER a a contract called Full In Service Support (FISS), Airbus Defence and Space (Airbus DS) is not only providing maintenance for RMAF’s A400M Atlas fleet but also logistics, training and information services management. Flight service and operations are also provided under the same programme.

In Malaysia, Airbus is working with Sepang Aircraft Engineering Sdn Bhd for the FISS programme. Airbus owns 40 per cent of Sepang Aircraft Engineering.

Flight and technical training for RMAF personnel is still being conducted at Airbus DS facility in Seville, Spain, however.

The four-year FISS was signed this year after the first A400M for the RMAF was delivered in March. The first Atlas, M54-01 was unveiled at LIMA 2015 show in Langkawi.

According to Airbus Transport Aircraft Services head of operations Stephan A. Miegel, RMAF is the fourth operator of the A400M which selected FISS for its fleet. The other operators are Royal Air Force, Turkish Air Force and French Air Force.

(...)

Miegel said the RMAF and Airbus worked together in Toulouse for 2 years ahead of the delivery of the first aircraft, which was reflected in the high mission success rate since its introduction into service.

He was speaking at the Airbus Trade Media Briefing 2015 at the Airbus DS facility in Seville last week.

According to Meigel, the A400M fleet including RMAF has recorded a 91 per cent availability rates since entering service.

The second Atlas for RMAF – MSN36 – is expected to be delivered in December, pending the successful completion of its flight test. When Malaysian Defence visited the A400M final assembly facility, MSN36 was undergoing systems checks after the completion of the mating process of the fuselage and the wings.

A Indonésia aprovou a compra de cinco A400M.

Citação de: Ridzwan Rahmat, IHS Jane's Defence Weekly
Indonesia has approved a sum of USD2 billion for the acquisition of five Airbus A400M Atlas multirole aircraft to boost the country's military airlift capabilities, multiple sources from within Indonesia's government and defence industry confirmed to IHS Jane's on 18 January.

The airframes will be acquired in the transport and utility configuration, and will be operated across the Indonesian Air Force's (Tentara Nasional Indonesia - Angkatan Udara: TNI-AU's) Aviation Squadrons 31 and 32.

The acquisition, which received an official greenlight from the Indonesian House of Representatives' commission on defence, intelligence, and foreign affairs (Komisi I) in mid-January 2017, was approved with the condition that the final three airframes undergo final fit-out at state-owned PT Dirgantara's facilities in Bandung.

IHS Jane's also understands that provisions will be made in the contract to allow Indonesian engineers to study and observe the assembly of various major aircraft components, including wings and fuselage shells, for the first two airframes in Seville, Spain.
