The End of the Rising Sun – The Japanese Surrender in Color

On the sea, Japan still had 4 battleships, 5 aircraft carriers, and over 3,000 other vessels, including 200 human torpedos and 2,400 suicide boats. In the air approximately 13,500 aircraft, including 4,000 fighters and 1,500 bombers.

Given these points, estimated losses were enormous – two to four million casualties on the Allies part, including 400,000-800,000 KIA and five to ten million killed on the Japanese side. Also, time was of the essence as the Soviet Red Army intentions were unknown and invasion of Hokkaido was highly possible.

You'll have to forgive these low-quality screengrabs that I took with my camera, but CBS just revealed the first photographs from the wreck of USS Hornet (CV-8).

"This painting illustrates the epic journey of a group of escapees who sailed an abandoned landing barge from Crete to Egypt. The 137-strong party, mostly Royal Marines, set out on 1 June. Nine New Zealanders were thought to be among this party, although the only one known by name was Private W.A. Hancox. He had been picked up 3 km off shore, paddling along on a plank of wood.

After the barge’s fuel ran out blankets were rigged as sails. To make sure these caught the breeze the men often had to jump into the water and push the nose of the barge in the right direction. Conditions on board were tough. Food supplies were rationed to half a tobacco tin of water and a teaspoon of bully beef per day. During the voyage one soldier died of exhaustion and another committed suicide. On 9 June, eight days after leaving Crete, the barge drifted ashore 24 km west of Sidi Barrani in Egypt."

D-Day New Guinea: How the Aussies helped capture a Japanese stronghold

In September 1943, Japanese troops stationed in Lae, New Guinea faced one of the most complex military operations of the Pacific War. The Allied forces launched a coordinated land, sea and air attack, including an amphibious landing, leading to the fall of the most important Japanese base in New Guinea. Military historian Phillip Bradley joins Philip Clark to talk about his new book, which delves into this little-known battle.

The Nazis’ dream of marching through Moscow did in fact come true, but not in the way that they had imagined. Almost 60,000 Wehrmacht prisoners-of-war took part in the so-called “Parade of the vanquished” on the streets of the Soviet capital.
