Two RAF fighters which scrambled across Britain to intercept a foreign aircraft apparently warned the plane would be 'shot down', after it sparked a terror alert by taking an unscheduled detour over London.
The Typhoons from RAF Coningsby, Lincolnshire, flew to Kent, south east England, at supersonic speeds to dramatically halt the plane on its way to Birmingham airport after it 'caused concern' to air traffic controllers.
The swoop, which resulted in the Lativan-registered plane being grounded at Stansted airport, sparked a massive sonic boom which was heard across a 50-mile radius.
Soon after the incident, chilling audio emerged appearing to show one of the RAF pilots warning the three-man crew on board the foreign plane to listen to military instructions or risk being 'shot down'.

Nato has sounded a warning after 26 Russian bombers, tankers and fighter jets on military exercises were intercepted around Europe in just 24 hours.
Jets were scrambled by the RAF and allies in Germany, Portugal and Turkey after the 'unusual' spike in activity, which saw two giant Tu-95 Bear H bombers fly close to Britain yesterday.
The alliance said Russia had conducted 'significant military manoeuvres in European airspace' - though it then added none of the planes had strayed into any specific country's territory.

Royal Air Force, March 18, 2015 - The RAF’s latest Puma helicopter literally stepped into the spotlight as it deployed for the first time on operations in support of the NATO mission providing training and assistance to Afghan forces.

On a dark winter’s night, illuminated by runway lights, the first Puma HC Mark2 aircraft was loaded on to a single C17 transport aircraft at RAF Brize Norton in Oxfordshire for the 3,608 mile journey to Kabul.

Its departure came just days before the MOD announced that the new Puma, and the RAF’s latest version of the Chinook, the Mark 6, were both ready for operational use.

The news came at an event at RAF Benson in Oxfordshire, the home of Puma units 33 Squadron and 230 Squadron which will rotate through tours of duty in Afghanistan.

The UK Royal Air Force (RAF) may retain in service a number of its Lockheed Martin C-130J Hercules transport aircraft for special forces use, a senior service official disclosed on 16 September. The C-130J is due to be withdrawn from service in 2022 in favor of a joint A400M and Boeing C-17 Globemaster III airlift force.

Paris Air Show 2015: Lockheed Martin says maritime C-130 offering for UK has international potential

Citar
Lockheed Martin plans to leverage for the international market the maritime patrol C-130 upgrade that it proposes for the UK, a company official told IHS Jane's at the Paris Air Show.

With dozens of operators around the world already fielding the venerable airlifter, George Shultz, Vice President and General Manager C-130 Programs, said that the palletised maritime patrol aircraft (MPA) that it is touting for the UK could be a good fit for others.

"We have been in discussions with the UK over its MMA [maritime multimission aircraft] requirement, and we believe that our solution [of converting existing C-130s in the inventory] could meet other customer needs around the world," he said.

While no formal requirement currently exists, the UK is widely believed to be looking at options for reintroducing the MPA capability that was effectively lost when the BAE Systems Nimrod MRA.4 programme was cancelled in the 2010 Strategic Defence and Security Review (SDSR).

The Royal Air Force (RAF) has 24 C-130Js in its inventory, which are currently due for retirement in 2022. It has been suggested that some might be kept in service for special forces use, and Lockheed Martin's proposal is that a palletised mission kit might be a good option for the UK.

"The components that would go into our roll-on/roll-off mission kit already exist and are in service today, and we have integrated everything that would be required, except torpedoes, which could be done," said Shultz.

Shultz said that Lockheed Martin would have a better understanding of UK requirements after the SDSR that is due later this year, but with all the talk being that the procurement or lease of the Boeing P-8A Poseidon is a done deal, he noted the advantages that the C-130 might have over it. "The P-8 is a fine aircraft, but the C-130 [upgrade] offers an innovative way to use already existing platforms for a completely new mission, and it means that you can use the infrastructure that you already have also," he said.

Citar
The UK's frontline fast-jet force is set to fall to its lowest numerical strength just ahead of the turn of the decade, with the almost simultaneous retirement of both the Panavia Tornado GR.4 and early model Eurofighter Typhoon fleets, the government disclosed on 21 July.

Answering questions in the House of Commons, Philip Dunne, Minister for Defence Equipment, Support, and Technology said that the retirement of the Tornados is to coincide with that of the Tranche 1 Typhoons in 2019.

Currently, the Royal Air Force (RAF) fields 53 Tranche 1 Typhoons and 87 Tornados which, when coupled with the Tranche 2 and 3A Typhoons now flying, brings its frontline combat inventory up to 192 aircraft. Although the loss of 140 aircraft by 2019 represents a 77% reduction in the current force strength on paper, it should be noted that this will be offset somewhat by the continued delivery of the Tranche 3 Typhoons, as well as the arrival of the first Lockheed Martin F-35B Lightning II Joint Strike Fighters.

Even so, while all 40 Tranche 3A Typhoons should be with the RAF by 2019, the United Kingdom is expected to have received only about 15 to 20 F-35Bs by this time (to be operated by both the RAF and Royal Navy). When the loss of the Tornados and Tranche 1 Typhoons is taken into account, the United Kingdom will be left with about 127 frontline combat jets at best when this happens (the lowest number that the RAF will have fielded since its creation in 1918).

Notwithstanding the fact that at that early point in its service the F-35 will likely not be fully combat capable (the Block 3F [full combat capability] software is slated to be rolled out in late 2017, but the United Kingdom is not due to declare full operating capability [land and maritime] for the type until 2023). To date, only the first 14 operational F-35Bs have been authorised (of which four have been ordered), and while overall numbers have not yet been disclosed there is a possibility that the original planned order for 138 aircraft may be truncated to just 48 for the new Queen Elizabeth-class carriers.

If this were to occur, the UK frontline fast-jet fleet would number just 107 Tranche 2 and 3A Typhoons and 48 F-35Bs, for a grand total of 155 combat aircraft. While this could be increased with the 48 additional Typhoons earmarked for a Tranche 3B buy, this now seems all but certain not to happen.

While there is some validation to the argument that, because the Tranche 2 and 3A Typhoons and the F-35Bs are more capable aircraft than those that came before them, fewer will be needed, it is also true that no aircraft, no matter how capable, can be in more than one place at any time. This has been shown by the government's recent decision to slow down the pace of the Tornado retirement, even reconstituting an already disbanded unit, to ensure that simultaneous operational commitments in three theatres (Afghanistan, Iraq, and North Africa at that time) could be met.

The United Kingdom currently faces a number of threats to its security that require the application of combat aircraft, either in a kinetic warfighting role, as over Iraq and no doubt soon over Syria, or in a deterrent role, such as with the Baltic Air Policing missions currently being flown to ward off Russian aggression against NATO allies. With at least one of these threats only recently having been described by the UK prime minister, David Cameron, as "generational", and the other not likely to be resolved anytime soon, the further loss of UK airpower at such a precarious time as this seems somewhat perverse.

One solution to this quandary might be not to retire the Tranche 1 Typhoons at all, after all a 16-year service life - given the investment that has been made - does not appear to provide value for money or to make much sense. Although there will certainly be a cost implication of retaining the Tranche 1 Typhoons in service, this would be relatively small given that all of the initial investment has already been made, and that the training, operating, and sustainment infrastructures are already in place and are set to serve the wider Typhoon force through to the 2030 out-of-service date now earmarked for the Tranche 2 and 3A aircraft.

While it is true that the early-model Typhoons are not compatible with many of the hardware and software upgrades that would be needed to afford them a full multirole capability, they remain highly potent air-to-air fighter platforms and should be able to more than match any adversaries that they might meet in this arena for a number of years yet.

There is no physical reason why these 53 Tranche 1 Typhoons could not be retained in service out to 2030. While they will never match the outright capabilities of their more modern stablemates, a rolling programme of upgrades to their systems, such as the already very capable Captor mechanically-scanned radar, should at the very least afford the United Kingdom with a highly potent force multiplier to relieve some of the pressure from the newer Typhoons and Lightning IIs.

In a tweet today  by RAF Engineering, they have revealed an Augmented Reality will be available for those interested in becoming an RAF ICT technician.Being an engineer is just as important as being a pilot, so if you prefer getting your hands dirty to being up in the  air you might want to give the Augmented Reality experience a try . No details have been released  on what the RAF AR experience entails, other than the technician role, but it may involve seeing how different mechanisms work inside various vehicles or being able to differentiate certain parts.

OFF: Reino Unido escolhe jato executivo da Embraer para treinar pilotos militares

Phenom 100 será utilizado pelas forças armadas britânicas para preparar tripulantes em aeronave categoria multimotor

(https://www.forumdefesa.com/forum/proxy.php?request=http%3A%2F%2Fcache.aeromagazine.uol.com.br%2Fmedia%2Fphenom_100_uk.png&hash=5659d9c7c5f52c3e5049af394023777b)

A new RAF radar facility that will track Russian military aircraft approaching the north of the UK will be operational soon, the MoD has said.

The £10m Remote Radar Head facility is being built at Saxa Vord on the island of Unst in Shetland.

It will provide key information on aircraft movements across the North Sea and feed the Quick Reaction Alert (QRA) operation.

The latest QRA launch last week saw RAF Typhoons intercept two Russian bombers.

The RAF monitored the Russian Blackjack jets as they passed through international airspace, before the Typhoons from RAF Lossiemouth escorted them out of the UK's area of interest.

Defence secretary warns of Russian plot
UK 'must prepare for Russia fight'
The Russian aircraft, which had not responded to air traffic controllers, did not enter UK sovereign airspace.

There have been 59 QRA launches in the past five years.

The MoD said the new radar base would improve RAF and Nato understanding of the airspace north of Britain and further out across the Norwegian Sea at a time of increased Russian military activity.

It will see Unst return to the role it performed during the 1960s and 70s, when the site was used as an early warning radar on Nato's northern flank.

The facility will be operated remotely by RAF personnel, with contractors only attending the site for maintenance.

RAF to scrap twin-seat Typhoons

Tim Ripley, London - Jane's Defence Weekly

The UK Royal Air Force (RAF) is to scrap 16 UK Eurofighter Typhoons as part of a project to save GBP800 million (USD1.13 billion) on the running cost of the service's combat aircraft fleet.

The plans to dismantle the aircraft and harvest spare parts for use on the remainder of the Typhoon fleet were revealed to Jane’s on 29th January by RAF Air Command at High Wycombe, in Buckinghamshire, in response to a Freedom of Information (FOI) Act request.

The project, known as Reduce to Produce (RTP), aims to generate GBP50 million worth of parts from each airframe “back into the supply chain”, according to the FOI data.

Project Tempest: Britain’s bold 6th generation fighter announced

Citar
The British Ministry of Defence today unveiled a new £2 billion project, dubbed Tempest, intended to lead to a 6th generation fighter to be ready in the 2030s. Following Brexit, Britain fears isolation from the next European fighter and Tempest is likely an attempt to keep Britain in the game. Hush-Kit spoke to RUSI defence analyst Justin Bronk to find out more.

“The Tempest mock-up and virtual concept art unveiled at Farnborough , whilst clearly very early stage ideas rather than anything approaching a prototype or tech demonstrator, do tell us a few things about British thinking in terms of a new combat air platform for the late 2030s.

Some 600 personnel work at RAF Scampton, including service personnel, contractors and civil servants.

On October 13, 1916, Air Station Brattleby Cliff opened as a Home Defence Flight unit prior to being renamed RAF Scampton in 1918. This makes the station one of the RAF’s oldest.

The base became host to 617 Squadron (more widely known as the Dambusters), which was established in 1943. From here, they flew the most famous mission – operation Chastise.

The base has also, post war, been the home of the Vulcan bomber.

RAF Scampton now plays an important role in the protection of UK airspace as the home of No 1 Air Control Centre.

It’s also home to the Mobile Meteorological Unit.

In 2017, the base hosted the first Scampton Airshow, trailing the success of the previous Waddington Airshow.

The Tornado has launched hundreds of airstrikes on so-called Islamic State in the Middle East (Picture: MOD).

Built more than 40 years ago to fight a nuclear war, the RAF's primary ground attack platform is due to be retired from service by March 2019.

The Tornado can also conduct intelligence gathering missions and is armed with a variety of Paveway bombs, Brimstone air-to-air missiles and Storm Shadow cruise missiles.

The aircraft also possesses an Advanced Short Range Air-to-Air Missile (ASRAAM) for defensive purposes.

When deployed in an armed reconnaissance or close air support role, it would usually be armed with a mix of Paveway IV and Dual-Mode Seeker Brimstone, combined with a Litening III targeting pod, and in addition to the internal 27mm gun.

In this video you get to join us as we explore this old RAF airfield . This was just one of the locations we explored on our exploring/camping trip .
The airfield is not abandoned but has a few disused jets and helicopters around the site along with some empty abandoned buildings but we did not have time to explore the buildings .

(https://www.forumdefesa.com/forum/proxy.php?request=http%3A%2F%2Ffly-news.es%2Fwp-content%2Fuploads%2FCaptura-de-pantalla-2019-05-15-a-las-10.20.49.png&hash=daad401ee5d1b67c8cd4b35cdd545acd)

RAF notes Puma milestone, with third of hours delivered on operations

One of three UK RAF Puma HC2 helicopters assigned to Operational 'Toral'. This single mission, flying in and around Kabul in Afghanistan, has accounted for a third of the type's 30,000 hours since 2015. Source: Crown Copyright

The UK Royal Air Force (RAF) has flown 30,000 hours on its Westland-Aerospatiale SA 330E Puma HC2 medium-lift helicopters over the last five years, with 10,000 of these having been accrued on operations in Afghanistan.

Having received the first of 24 upgraded Pumas from Airbus Helicopters in 2015, the RAF announced on 28 January that it had achieved the almost unheard of feat of amassing a third of its hours on the type during real-world combat operations.

"A third of all flying done on operations is quite unprecedented. I don't think, to my knowledge, there is another platform in our inventory that has completed a third of its total flying hours on operations," Group Captain Adam Wardrope, Station Commander RAF Benson and Puma Force Commander, was quoted as saying.

The United Kingdom deployed three Puma HC2 helicopters (crewed by personnel from 33 Squadron and 230 Squadron from RAF Benson) to Afghanistan in March 2015, taking over from the Boeing Chinooks that had been flying in support of the Afghan National Army Officer Academy (ANAOA) and Afghan Security Ministries in Kabul since late 2014. One Puma HC2 helicopter crashed in October 2015 with the loss of five of the nine personnel on board but was replaced in-theatre.

"The Puma has been in Afghanistan for nearly five years and we have two aircraft out of three flying on a daily basis so 10,000 hours in five years is impressive," Gp Capt Wardrope said. "The real statistic that shows the capability of the Puma for me, and what really drives home the serviceability and the spares and everything else that keeps the aircraft going, is that we've met over 95% of our flying task. We have never failed to deliver on operations in that entire five years. We've never been let down by the logistics or the engineering because we've always had a robust method in place to get any problem solved, which is a significant achievement on top of the 10,000 hours as well."

New state-of-the-art radar delivered to UK

Citar
A new state-of-the art long-range air defence radar that can be deployed in support of worldwide operations or used to cover gaps in coverage on home shores has been delivered to the UK.

Last year, the DE&S Air Defence and Electronic Warfare Systems (ADEWS) team based at RAF Henlow awarded a £13.1 million contract to Indra, a Spain based global company to produce their Lanza Long Tactical Range 25 radar for the RAF’s Battlespace Management Force.

Due to its small number of components, this system can be rapidly deployed worldwide using in-service military vehicles and transport aircraft such as the Hercules C-130J. The radar also benefits from being highly capable of mitigating the effect of windfarms and can rotate at two different speeds providing an Air Traffic Radar Service mode long desired by the RAF.

The radar will be used mainly for long range surveillance of co-operative (secondary surveillance) and non-co-operative aircraft. The flexibility of the system means that the RAF will be able to carry out a variety of Battlespace Management Missions, including long and short term deployments worldwide, as well as gap-filling in the UK in response to national operational requirements.

Last year the DE&S ADEWS team excelled in getting Indra on contract in just six months due to hard work and an open relationship with their RAF customer and despite COVID 19 significantly impacting both Spain and UK making planning particularly challenging on both sides the team has made significant progress. Now the radar has arrived in the UK it will undergo extensive trials and is due to be accepted into service with the RAF by mid-2021.

Airbus pitches H175 as potential Puma replacement for UK
by Gareth Jennings

Airbus is pitching its H175 as a potential replacement for the United Kingdom’s fleet of Royal Air Force (RAF) Westland-Aerospatiale SA 330E Puma HC2 medium-lift helicopters in the 2025 timeframe.

(https://imagizer.imageshack.com/v2/xq90/924/LpwFKQ.jpg) (https://imageshack.com/i/poLpwFKQj)
Airbus is pitching its H175 as a potential Puma HC2 replacement for the UK in the 2025 timeframe, noting industrial benefits for the country in developing a military variant of the helicopter. (Airbus Helicopters)

Speaking at the virtual Royal Aeronautical Society Next-Generation Rotorcraft Conference, Jerome Combe, Portfolio Policy & Strategy at Airbus Helicopters France, said that while the company’s NH90 and H225M platforms would suit the capabilities required of any UK Puma replacement effort, the H175 would also provide industrial opportunities for the country.

“We know that in the UK there are questions about a Puma replacement,” Combe said on 21 January. “There are two ways to look at it – either the UK will push for a capability requirement, and I think that both the [NH90 and H225M] would be the perfect ones [in that case], or if the UK had in mind the national cost [benefits] I think that [the H175] could really offer a huge opportunity for UK content in the design of the [military variant of the] platform, [which it could] also export. So, I think it is good to have it in mind that the H175 could play a role.”

The RAF currently fields 23 Puma helicopters that were upgraded to the HC2 standard in the mid-2010s. With the airframes themselves dating back to the early 1970s, these helicopters are slated for retirement in 2025 with no replacement planned.

A number of defence commentators have said this week's F-35B crash highlights the need for an attrition reserve. And I agree with them. Worth pointing out though that the RAF has lost 7 C-130s since 1999. That's 1/3 of the Tactical Air Transport fleet after 2024.

Caramba! Que diferença de preço!
E justifica-se??

https://twitter.com/TotherChris/status/1716760525038600673

The penny-wise pound-foolish Apache/JAGM saga continues.

The UK is now buying 3,000 JAGM missiles for $957.4M.

That equates to $319,000 per missile for a system already integrated onto our AH-64E's, that the UK has already trained on, which the UK has already paid for and received examples of for handling, from an Ally who is supposedly covering all extra costs of development, leaving little to no NRE expectations for the UK to bear.

Even if we go with the highest Brimstone 3 cost of £175,000 per missile which is meant to include Brimstone 3 R&D amortisation, even if we go with double the integration cost the UK was meant to "save" at £150M, the UK would have saved £110M by sticking with our own developed and proven system.

This does not even go into details such as re-investment in industry via procurement, tax recovery to Treasury or potential for exports (Poland's own AH-64E purchase is a vast missed opportunity). The UK already knows how to use and handle Brimstone eliminating most of the NRE with the system, and we have heard from defence ministers on the record in Parliament of the superior and battleproven hit rate of the Brimstone in active Operations compared to Hellfire based systems such as JAGM repeatedly over the years.

If we do take the lower of the purchase price per missile that is known for Brimstone and the £70M quoted as being "saved" by not integrating Brimstone on Apache, then for integration and purchase of 3,000 Brimstone on British AH-64E's we would expect to see a lower end cost, using DE&S own figures, of around £385M, saving almost £400M on this purchase compared to JAGM.

Even the £110M saving at the higher prices is desirable right now and would lead to further savings in future.

It is quite clear that the promised JAGM price reduction has not occurred.

BS was called at the time of the claims and these calls have clearly, demonstrably, been borne out.

This huge expense on an unproven foreign supplied missile with variations in reliability of supply, when a higher performing and perception-busting lower cost British missile exists and is in production, does not meet the claims at the time that JAGM would save the taxpayer money and should be both questioned and investigated.
